Story
Current Location: Richmond, VA MEET WOODY! Woody is a big-hearted, lovable dog who just wants to be part of the family. His tail seems to wag on autopilot, and his sweet personality shines through the moment he feels comfortable. Woody is loyal, affectionate, and always ready to play or curl up close once he’s had his fun. Energy and Personality Woody has a medium to high energy level. He loves to play and zoom around the yard but settles nicely afterward for naps or quiet time. He’s happiest when included in the action and enjoys being close to his people. He can be a little whiny when left out, but it’s mostly because he loves company. Training and Behavior Woody is 99% house trained and quickly learned to use the outdoors as his restroom. He’s done great in a fenced yard and hasn’t made any escape attempts. He does fine in a large wire crate but can get vocal for a bit before settling. Because he’s not destructive when left alone, his foster family doesn’t always use the crate. Woody responds well to direction, listens when corrected, and can easily be redirected with a toy. Social Life Woody gets along well with some dogs, usually smaller dogs. He gets along with his foster mom's big dog but mostly prefers to be an only dog so he can soak up all his family's attention. He can be a bit overenthusiastic in play because he doesn’t always realize his size, but he means well and adjusts quickly with guidance. He has also done well with the resident cat, respectfully backing off after a warning hiss. Woody has met delivery people and neighborhood visitors and may bark at first, but he quiets down when told. Quirks and Special Traits Woody is a sweet, affectionate dog who thrives on love and inclusion. He’s playful, loyal, and loves a good cuddle session after a day of fun. His expressive nature and big personality make him a joy to have around. Best Home Fit Woody would do well in a home familiar with larger breeds or energetic dogs. He would love a family who enjoys playtime, outdoor activities, and has room for him to stretch his legs. A home where he’s not left alone for long periods would make him happiest. This dog tested positive for heartworm disease before arriving to the rescue. The disease was treated while in foster care. Heartworm disease is transmitted to a dog through a bite from an infected mosquito. With monthly preventatives, the disease is completely preventable. Story
Xena, the 6-month-old purebred Mountain Cur, is a great choice for anyone searching for an intelligent and athletic furry friend. She enjoys playing and running around, and is gentle and affectionate towards other dogs. Although she may take some time to warm up to new people, once she does, you will receive an abundance of love and kisses. Xena had a bit of a rough start in life, as she was discovered alone under a building in SC when she was only 10 weeks old. However, she has made tremendous progress since then, and is now spayed, up-to-date on vaccinations, housebroken, and heartworm negative. This furry beauty is currently on monthly preventative, ensuring her good health and happiness. If you are considering adopting Xena, it is strongly recommended that you have a fenced backyard, as she loves to run and play. Additionally, Xena would appreciate living with another dog, as she adores all of her foster siblings. Overall, Xena is an intelligent, athletic, and sweet pup that would be an excellent addition to any caring household. To find out more about this gorgeous pup and see if she is the right fit for you, get in touch with her foster family today.

Story
ABOUT CANTON Meet Canton, a super sweet boy who’s full of enthusiasm and affection! Canton came to HAP from a high-intake shelter in Louisiana when they no longer had space for him. This jumpy, playful guy is still working on his manners and would benefit from continued training to help him channel all that excitement. Canton loves food and toys, making him super motivated to learn! He’s been improving on leash with consistent walks, though he’ll need continued practice. Canton is super affectionate at heart and enjoys pets, cuddles, and quality time with his people. While we know he means well, due to his size and energy, Canton would do best with humans large enough to keep up with him, while teaching him calm, polite behaviors. With guidance, structure, and love, Canton has all the makings of an amazing companion! "I had Canton today! Super energetic and sweet he loved the birds at the park and eventually warmed up for some cuddles! He did really well on a leash only pulling a little and knows how to sit! We had such a great day!" - Chloe "I took canton out for the day and it's safe to say he loved the college. He met so many new friends and even got dressed up for saint pattys. He is 100% food driven and especially likes to attack car windows lol. He is such a sweetheart" - Anya "It was my first DDO, and I got lucky enough to take out Canton today, and he was a delight to have, he is so sweet, and such a cuddle bug. I love how he just melts into you! He gives great hugs too. He spent his time getting in a lot of sniffs and steps. We stoped at some benches a couple times and he got lots of belly rubs, treats and back scratches, and got to stare down some geese! It was really a pleasure to experience this time with Canton today, He is a really good boy, and gave such a good first impression!" - Angel "I had Canton (from Stanton!) out today for a walk around Nottingham Green. He loved it! He settles down for the car ride quickly, getting accustomed to my wife and me easily. I think he preferred my wife since she had the treats! He is very food motivated. No trouble on the walk. We came across other folks on our trip, some with dogs, some without, some workers with loud machinery, some kids. Nothing seemed to bother him, and he did not pull on the leash. He doesn't like to lead, but follows very well. We finished up in our house with some scratches, play, and more treats. Overall, Canton is a sweetheart who would be a very good boy for somebody." - Tom If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Story
This friend has just arrived to us as a stray. When animals are found as strays, our staff will search for an owner. If no one comes to reclaim the pet, we will begin looking for a new home. Unfortunately, we rarely have a background on stray animals. Our staff will spend some time getting to know them and update their bio with more information as we learn. They are pending interactions with other animals until they have been cleared by our vet. Please note that we are often unsure of house, crate, car, and leash training status upon arrival. If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Our adoption process is on a first-come, best-match basis and we are not able to hold animals.
