Pryncess may have a name fit for a throne, but she’s actually a very modest and quiet girl. She is a shy-but-sweet soul who prefers to observe from the sidelines until she knows she’s safe. Once she trusts you, however, she reveals her true colors—a devoted, tender-hearted companion who will follow you with quiet loyalty. Some pets are in foster homes or may already have an appointment scheduled, so the appointment is important to make sure I will be available to meet you when you come. Polk County Humane Society is located in Bolivar, Missouri, but also makes transports to the Denver, CO, Des Moines, IA and St. Louis areas twice monthly. For potential adopters in those areas, we can do a virtual visit using FaceTime or another app. Just request an appointment using the same link, but note that you want the visit to be virtual. We will call you at the time of the visit once it is confirmed. For long distance transports to Colorado and Iowa, there is an additional $100 fee to cover the cost of the transport ($65) and a health certificate from a veterinarian ($35). For transports to St. Louis, the additional fee is $50 to help cover gas. Going that last mile home for our sweet pets! Ember enjoys fetch, walks (though she’s still working on leash manners), and relaxing with her favorite stuffed animals or a peanut butter jar. Ember will thrive in a home as the only dog with a yard where she can run and burn off energy. She's reactive with on-leash dog introductions and needs continued training and patience in this area. We are looking for a new home for Gracie, our loyal and loving 6-year-old medium-sized dog with significant reactivity issues. She loves food, running and playing in the backyard, and long snuggles on the couch. We have had her for over five years. She is afraid of and aggressive toward strangers and is slow to adjust to new people (ranging from a few hours to many days or weeks; faster with women) but becomes fiercely loyal and affectionate with time. She had never gotten along particularly well with most other dogs, but she and our other dog tolerated each other until recently, when she began snapping at and getting into severe fights with our other dog. Given these risks, she should not go to a home with other animals. She was initially nervous around our newborn child but became very patient and tolerant of that now toddler-aged child. Still, we would not consider her kid friendly given her reactivity and do not recommend families with young children adopt her.
