Story
Meet Elijah…a precious 5 year old ShihTzu, weighing 16 pounds, who has spent his entire life alone and unloved in a small filthy cage at a breeding facility. He is slowly learning the “freedoms” of sleeping inside a home on a soft bed snuggled under a blankie, a big bowl of good food and clean water and eating until he is full, lots and lots of belly rubs and kisses, and rolling on his back in the grass in the yard. Elijah is a very sweet little guy that requires a home with another small playful dog for companionship, a quiet home with no young children, and a secure fenced yard to go potty as he does not know how to walk on a leash. He also requires an adopter who has had some experience/knowledge with dogs that have been rescued from a breeder or puppymill. Elijah is healthy, current on his immunizations, heartworm negative, neutered, microchipped, and he has recently had his teeth cleaned along with multiple extractions. If you are interested, complete the  Adoption Application  on our website at  www.NeedyPaws.org  and we will contact you.  Adopters must live within an hour’s drive of St. Louis, MO. Elijah’s adoption fee is $295.00, which includes up-to-date vaccinations, heartworm testing and preventative, spay/neuter and microchip. We are a 100% foster-based rescue and all of our dogs live in approved foster homes. We are dedicated to finding the best Forever Homes, and will perform home visits and conduct veterinarian and reference checks for each potential adopter. Story
I have two shorkies that I unfortunately need to rehome as I had to place my husband in a nursing home and sold my house. The only affordable apartment I could find does not allow pets. Yogi is 14 years young and he loves to cuddle and eat! He is mostly deaf and his vision is not the best, but he is so lovable and easy to care for. I give him eye drops daily but he does not require any other medication. He is pee pad trained but also enjoys being outside and will potty out there as well. I’m not willing to separate him from his sister, Boo-boo, as they have been together their whole lives!

Jimmy Shih Tzu Male, 10lbs DOB 01/24/23 Neutered / Microchipped UTD on Core Vaccinations Current on Heartworm / Flea Preventative Adoption Donation: $550.00 (tax deductible) INSTRUCTIONS for ADOPTION: Please read the bio in its ENTIRETY. ***If you feel your family is a perfect match, submit an application. ***Applications & FAQ regarding adoption can be found here on our website. ***Current pets must be current on core vaccinations, have yearly heartworm testing and on heartworm preventative. ***Only completed applications that meet requirements will be reviewed. ***Since we are 100% foster-based rescue, meet n greets are scheduled with approved applicants. ***We do not allow shipping & do not transport. You must live not more than 350 miles from Maryville, IL 62062 and you will need to drive to this area for the meet & greet. Jimmy is a very sweet boy. He came into rescue as his breeder "retired" him. He is friendly and wants to be with a human. He does enjoy running/playing with his foster sisters and brothers of similar size in the secure physical fenced yard. Jimmy does not need to be crated when humans are away and either sleeps in the big bed with his foster mom or in the pet beds with foster pups. Jimmy has not been around small children since being in rescue but we don't see any issues as all children should be pet respective. Requirements for Jimmy: You will need either a physical fenced yard with no gaps at the bottom or a Gooby Escape Free harness for Jimmy to do his outside business when you bring him home safely. Bringing home a new pup is a huge responsibility. It requires lots of patience & time! But it is very rewarding if everyone is invested. Please apply if you meet the requirements & would like to adopt Jimmy Make sure everyone in the home is onboard with adopting Jimmy.

Shih Tzu DOB 09/15/21 14lbs Spayed/Microchipped UTD on vaccinations Current on flea & heartworm prevention Please read the bio in its ENTIRETY. If you feel your family is a perfect match, please send an email to gateway4paws@gmail.com for additional information. Only complete & qualified applications will be considered/contacted. We do not allow shipping & do not transport. You must live within 350 miles from Maryville, IL & able to drive there for a meet and greet. We are a 100% foster-based rescue. Applications & FAQ about our adoption process can be found on our website. Summer came into our program as a breeder release, still pretty young. Her dad is also in our program & featured for adoption on our website, his name is Hershey! (Check him out, too! Wouldn't it be cool if they found a home together.) When Summer came into her foster home, she was a bit spicy. She was confused, she wasn't sure if this was a good thing or not. She was very timid & scared. Boy, has she really changed, she has flourished & bloomed! Once so scared, she willingly goes to her foster mom & seeks companionship & cuddles from her. She will do best in a calm, low activity home. A home that is willing to patiently allow her to adjust & get used to her forever environment. Going into a new home will be another change for Summer, but she is very brave & we know that she will successfully make the transition if given a chance. She will do best learning from other 4-legged siblings, we would like to see her find a home with some friends of similar size & energy level. She follows her foster siblings around, she likes to play with them very gently, no rough housing. She also enjoys chewing on bones & will keep herself content while doing so. In her foster home, she has proven to be 100% house trained. We are so proud of her. With that said, her new family must understand she could have a few accidents until she gets her new routine down. Please be prepared to give her ample opportunity for success, praise her when she does it right, & be patient with her. Summer does great wearing a harness. But that's it. She will wear the harness like a diamond necklace, but she refuses to walk on leash. We know that eventually she will have a breakthrough, but it is not right now! Therefore, for her safety (& for her to be able to do her potty business immediately upon adoption), a secure physical fence yard is required. An aluminum or slat type of fencing will need a gap filler around the bottom half so she can't get through, something like galvanized wire mesh or another sturdy mesh type material. She isn't an outdoor adventure dog; she doesn't need a big yard. But she does need a very secure area to do her potty business. Never EVER should she be left in the yard alone. If you don't have another dog, please consider adopting Hershey & Summer. They get along famously, they love each other! We look forward to matching Summer with her forever family soon!

Story
Patti is a 5-year-old Shih Tzu with a sweet but shy personality who will need time and patience to warm up. She came from a puppy mill and is just beginning to learn what life in a loving home is all about. Patti is not a snuggly lap girl but is very content to be close by her people getting pets and scratches on her terms. Patti has done well with her potty skills as long as she has a consistent routine. She walks fairly well on a leash and enjoys going out for short strolls around the neighborhood. Patti will need a calm adult only home with people who are gentle and allow her to move at her own pace. Another confident dog in the home to help her learn the ropes of “dogging” would be best for her. Patti loves to explore and sunbath in the great outdoors and will require a secure fenced yard so she can do this safely. With time, love, and understanding, Patti has all the potential to become a loyal and loving companion. Patti is spayed, up to date on all vaccines, had a dental, heart worm negative and on heartworm preventative, de-wormed, and microchipped. Patti’s adoption fee is $350.00. Please go to our website aaprescue.org to learn about our adoption process.

Story
Murphy came to us from a local animal control due to the sudden and terrible passing of his dad. He was so upset he was lashing out at everyone. He was a scared little guy. He wants everyone to think he is a big mean dog...when in all actuality he is a sweet loveable little guy with a huge need for attention. He is best being an only dog, but has been ok with several others here as long as they have enough room to give each other space. He doesn't mind cats. He will need someone that understands small dog scare tactics :)  ##623222##
