Story
Mr Peanut is an adult male Pit Bull Terrier/Labrador Retriever Mix. Mr. Peanut weighs about 80 lbs. This guy LOVES people so he would do best with someone who will be around a lot. He is an active, high energy dog who seems housebroken and is okay with other dogs. We don’t know how he is with cats.  Volunteers For Animals and Orleans Correctional Facility have developed a Dog Training & Fostering Program within the prison that will provide socialization and basic obedience training for the dogs before being adopted. Volunteers For Animals will be pulling dogs from high kill shelters and locally who may be in need of behavioral support to become more adoptable. The dogs will then be transported to Orleans Correctional Facility where they will live with selected inmates who will care for them 24 hours per day for approximately 12 weeks. Each dog will have a crate, bedding, leash, collar, training treats, and food provided by Volunteers For Animals. A certified dog trainer will provide 1.5 hour formal weekly training class for the dogs, with extra sessions if needed, and the inmates will work daily to reinforce the formal training.  At the end of the training period the dogs will have an opportunity to take the test for "Canine Good Citizen."  The dogs will go to Orleans Correctional Facility for fostering and basic obedience training. Currently, our foster program for dogs can only handle approximately 4-6 dogs which is done in private homes. There is no formal dog obedience training easily available in these private homes. This program will help us to expand the number of dogs we foster and care for within VFA, and help at-risk dogs become more adoptable.  All of our dogs in The Path to Home Program will be crate trained, have basic obedience skills, and good house manners. Volunteers For Animals applied for and received a grant from Maddie's Fund in order to start this unique program. The grant has assisted in purchasing supplies, food and medical care for the dogs. Adoption Procedures The adoption process includes an application that is completed by the potential owner. If there are multiple applications on the same animal, the animal will go to the best home for that particular animal - not necessarily the first application. Fees for the Path Home animals are $200 per animal which needs to be cash or a check - NO CREDIT CARDS. All of the dogs are current on vaccines, heart worm tested and spayed/neutered. If you would like to be considered for any of the dogs, please come to the shelter and complete an application. If your application is approved, we strongly recommend setting up an appointment to meet and visit the dog at the Orleans Correctional Facility in Albion, NY. Our adoption application is not available online. Please do not call the Shelter regarding Path Home animals - they do not have any information. Email us at info@vol4animals.org regarding this program.  Here is the adoption process:   To adopt an animal you must complete an application and be approved. There is a $60 fee for any animal which needs to be cash or a check - NO CREDIT CARDS. If the animal is not spayed or neutered, there is a $35 deposit which will be returned upon proof of surgery. All dogs must be licensed before leaving the Shelter. Please note that public offices that issue dog licenses are not open on Saturdays and Sundays. All cats must leave in a carrier.   Thank you for considering a homeless animal.June 5, 2023, 10:16 pm

Story
Please put your hands (and paws) together for our newest addition, Bowie! 👩🏻‍🎤 This rockstar is only 1 year old, meaning he’s far from his peak! The pawparazzi has labeled him as a Pitt Mix, but all we know for sure is that this boy is handsome! Life on the road can be tough but this boy makes show biz look easy! He is always ready for some play time or an adventure! Bowie can be very eager to engage with his fans so he would do best in home without young children. We only picked up this superstar yesterday, but he’s already stolen the spotlight and our hearts! He’s a real-life Diamond Dog!

Story
Meet Cricket. Her story is a long and heartwrenching one. Cricket was rescued from a local shelter after being found wandering the streets of Rochester. She was in terrible shape. Her back legs were so bowed she was barely able to walk. Scabs and abrasions covered her frail body, Her back paws were completely urine-burned due to being left in a crate for an extended period of time. Someone put this sweet girl through intense trauma and then left her to fend for herself. Our first step when Cricket arrived was to get her comfortable. She got a bath, a yummy dinner, and lots of loving. Luckily, we were able to get her right into a foster home, and within an hour she was off to rest and relax! It was very apparent this baby had been through a lot. While she started to gain weight, her difficulty walking continued to be a challenge. After many vet visits and X-rays, it was determined she had sustained a traumatic injury to her rear left leg while very young. Unfortunately, she was never given medical care and was forced to adapt. Cricket relearned how to walk by applying the majority of her weight to her rear right leg while dragging her paws behind her. While this worked for a while, it has had dramatic repercussions. Cricket has grade 4 luxating patellas on both legs. This means she will be unable to walk within the year unless she undergoes multiple surgeries totaling up to 10k. While this may seem daunting, we are committed. to getting this girl back into tip-top shape and finding her the absolute best home. We are looking for a unique individual with experience with special needs dogs to “Foster to Adopt” Cricket while she undergoes her surgeries and treatment. This means while she would be in the care of an adopter, all expenses would be covered by the rescue. Interested in setting up a meet or just want to learn more?
