Story
Gump is classified as semi-feral, meaning his contact with humans is limited but not completely foreign. Gump was incredibly fearful of new people, sounds, and environments when he first arrived at Pets Alive, and his instinct to run away from them always used to win. Thanks to our Kennel Staff and Dog Walking Volunteers' dedication, Gump is armed with more confidence today than we ever thought possible. These days, Gump goes for long strolls in the woods and gives gentle kisses to the friends he knows well. His circle of trust is small, but he gets braver every single week. We'll be honest: Gump isn't the right fit for every household. He's a quiet guy who would do best as the only pet. Gump isn't looking for a large family to fold into and would do best as the only pet in a mellow household as he transitions to the good life! If you have the patience and extra love and are interested in Gump please fill out an application with Pets Alive in Middletown NY to schedule an appointment to come meet him! **Please Note** Our pet listings update automatically every 4 hours, so they are as current as possible. Story
Resident sweetheart and longterm resident Violet recently went for a weeklong sleepover with two of her volunteer besties, Amy and Tim! We learn SO much about the pups in our care when they get into a foster home. Violet has been waiting at our shelter for over three years, and it breaks our hearts. Here's what Violet's foster parents said about her during his first experience in a home... Violet's Vibe: We were totally surprised by what a calm and loving guest Violet was. We expected her to be a ball of untamed energy, based on our time walking her at Pets Alive. She remained her loving self but almost immediately calmed down when we brought her home. Violet loved to shower us with kisses! Exercise: When we instigated play, Violet was the silliest goofball. B when it was time to relax she calmed down super quickly. We took her on a couple short walks a day, and she especially loved wandering around the woods in our backyard. She almost never pulled on the leash, and was very well behaved when we took her into town to meet new people. While she enjoyed outside time, she was also happy to relax all day. Toys: Violet would often bring us a toy to play fetch with when she got excited. She also loved chewing on her Nylabone and rope toys. Potty Training: During the whole week she was with us, Violet never had a single accident in the house. Crate Training: Violet would sometimes choose to rest in her crate during the day. At night, we put her in the crate. Looking back, we wish we had given her a chance to prove that she would be fine without a crate. She was never destructive and gave us nothing to be concerned about. Food + Treats: Violet was pretty good at eating her meals. She showed only occasional interest in treats and very mild curiosity about human food. By the end of the week, we could easily sit next to her on the couch and eat tempting food without her giving it a second thought. Fears: Violet was jumpy about sudden movements and sounds, but we were impressed with how brave she was as she got used to all the things in her new environment. "Violet loved her vacation and wasn't ready to go back to the kennel. She resisted going through the front doors of the shelter and it broke our hearts. She was a wonderful guest. ** Please Note ** Our pet listings update automatically every 4 hours, so they are as current as possible. Story
UPDATE: Maia was pregnant when we was attacked and had 6 puppies on June 23rd.  Two of her surviving puppies, Ziva & Zinnia, are ready for adoption and we need to find a nice furever home for Maia as well.  She is very sweet with people including children.  Maia is blind but navigates familiar spaces smoothly.  She loves to lay in the grass while her foster mom works in the garden.  Maia can be an only dog or possibly go with a calm male dog. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here's a Maia update since she was attacked last week. First, we thank you for all the generous donations we received on behalf of Maia! We asked & boxer lovers answered! She's doing really well. In fact, she’s healing SO well, she'll be cleared for transport this weekend!  She's taking antibiotics, pain meds & having her wounds cleaned.  We'd love to have a foster/adopter to welcome this sweet girl when she arrives in the Northeast this weekend.  She deserves love & comfort after this trauma. Since we've had Maia, we learned she is heartworm positive. We started her treatment plan which is paid for by your generosity.  She is also visually impaired. She walks well outside on leash but inside bumps into walls and doors.  It's also possible she's never been inside a house.  When dogs bark, she freezes but with encouragement from her foster she remains calm.   Please continue helping us with Maia! If you can provide a safe place for her arrival, please contact your coordinator or apply here: https://www.chelseashopeboxerrescue.com/adoption-application/May 6, 2024, 4:29 pm

Story
Meet our Christmas miracle Rose, who was saved by her own Christmas miracles while sedated on the euthanasia table. Those miracles - her newborn pups! Rose was surrendered to a high kill shelter by a family who simply didn’t want her any longer. Forgotten and unclaimed, she was marked for euthanasia. In her most dire moment, already on the table with catheters placed and sedatives administered, ready to be euthanized, an unexpected miracle occurred. As Rose lay there, teetering on the brink of the end, she went into labor. This incredible turn of events halted the procedure, and her life, along with her unborn puppies, was spared in those critical moments. We contacted by the shelter and they wanted Rose and her puppies out immediately, even more heartbreaking was that she still had the needles in her veins when they dragged her out to our volunteers car. Now, Rose and her puppies are safe under our care, but this is where the hard work begins. We urgently need your help to provide Rose and her newborn puppies with the care and nurturing they desperately require. Every donation will contribute to: Essential veterinary care and monitoring for Rose and her puppies. Nutritious food and supplements for their recovery, and a safe and comfortable environment for their rehabilitation. We humbly ask you to consider making a donation, or simply spread the word about the great work CHBR is doing. Your generosity ensures that Rose, and many others like her, get every chance they deserve. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for always standing by us! Story
UPDATE: Rocco loves to run and play with other dogs and is enjoying life in a foster home.  He loves all people, including every single stranger that will say "hi" to him.  In foster he is great with a 3YO and 5YO child as well as foster fur siblings.  He is a great passenger in the car and unphased by livestock.  He would love to show you his wiggles!  ***************************************************** This is Rocco.  He's 3.5 years old and lost his home when his parents had a human baby.  He always has lived outside and is still outside waiting patiently for a new family.  We need a foster or adopter to love and accept him immediately!     Rocco is neutered, vaccinated & great with other dogs.  He does not like cats.  Rocco is also friendly with children but he's big boy and boisterous.  He longs to be part of a family again and we know he'll love life indoors as well.   Can you help us reward this handsome boy the life he so deserves? https://www.chelseashopeboxerrescue.com/May 6, 2024, 4:29 pm
