Pippy arrived at Animal Aid Society with a tiny stuffed toy.The next morning, when I brought her breakfast, she greeted me proudly carrying it in her mouth, then walked beside me all the way to her apartment while I put down her food. Pippy is a Beagle, which means she considers breakfast less of a meal than a sacred event, and at a chonky 21 pounds she's carrying a little more Beagle than nature originally intended. She wanted that breakfast very badly.But, she also wanted to keep hold of her baby.She actually tried to eat without putting the stuffed toy down.I don't know what happened to Pippy before she came to us, and I don't need to. Watching a little dog try to solve the engineering problem of eating breakfast while hanging onto the only thing that made her feel secure told me enough.Pippy is about six years old and may be the sweetest, gentlest dog I've ever met. When you reach down to pet her, she instinctively crouches, as though she's trying to decide whether this hand is going to hurt her or be kind. When the hand lands softly, her whole body relaxes, her tail starts wagging, and her expression changes completely. It's impossible to watch without wondering how many times kindness lost that contest before it finally started winning.The shelter volunteers, being highly trained for these situations, responded exactly as you'd expect.We started bringing her more babies.Pippy now has an impressive collection of little stuffed toys. She carefully carries them around, proudly shows them to anyone willing to admire them, keeps them together, and treats them with astonishing tenderness. Somewhere along the way, something else changed, too. She now gently sets her baby down before she eats because she's beginning to believe it will still be there when she's finished.That may not sound like much, but around here we know better. Trust doesn't arrive all at once. Sometimes it shows up disguised as a little Beagle deciding it's safe to let go of a stuffed toy for five minutes.Pippy would love to meet you and show you her stuffies at Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA. Meet Ganache — a little chocolate-covered heartthrob who is about to steal yours! â¤ï¸Seriously, just look at this face. Those enormous doe eyes, those wonderfully long hound-dog ears, and that gorgeous chocolate and tan coloring are enough to make anyone swoon. But the best part? Ganache’s personality is every bit as adorable as his looks.This Beagle/Chi mix boy is a total social butterfly who seems to believe that everyone he meets is simply a friend he hasn’t gotten to know yet. People? Loves them. Dogs? Loves them. Attention? Absolutely! Ganache has even attended several puppy yoga classes, where he happily mingled with puppies and was cuddled, handled, and fussed over by people of all ages. He thought the whole experience was fantastic and was clearly born to be the center of attention!And yet, for such a fun-loving little guy, Ganache has an impressively sweet off-switch. When the excitement is over, he is perfectly content to curl up in his crate for a nap or quietly watch whatever is happening around him. He doesn’t need to be entertained every second of the day and is already showing the ability to settle nicely when left alone.He’s also off to a wonderful start with his potty training. Ganache sleeps through the night without accidents in his pen and consistently uses his pee pad during the day. We expect this handsome boy to top out around 20–25 pounds when fully grown — a great size for adventures, cuddles, and taking up just the right amount of space on the couch.Ganache really is the whole puppy package: adorable, social, adaptable, affectionate, and already showing such wonderful manners for his age. Meet Chance Some dogs are given a name that fits them perfectly, and Chance is one of them. This sweet 5-year-old Beagle mix received his name because he was given a second chance at life—and he has embraced it with his whole heart. Chance came from a hoarding/ animal abuse case where his owners were consequently arrest, arrested. Despite everything he's been through, Chance has never lost his love for people. His tail still wags, his eyes still light up when he sees you, and he still believes that his forever family is out there waiting for him. Chance is one of the sweetest dogs you'll ever meet. He loves attention, enjoys spending time with his people, and has a gentle, loving personality that makes it impossible not to fall in love with him. He is a little on the chubby side at 56lbs and loves to be a couch potato, though we have put him on an exercise regimen and a diet. Chance is currently heartworm positive, but that doesn't define who he is. He is receiving treatment and deserves the comfort of a loving home while he completes his journey to recovery. His future is bright, and all he needs now is someone willing to give him the love and security he has always deserved.Chance was given a second chance at life. As discarded hunting dogs, life hasn’t been easy for Heidi and Chaplin, but things are finally looking up! Following a lifetime of neglect, they have received some much needed TLC and are ready for their forever home. We do believe they’re a bonded pair and are seeking a loving home where they can enjoy their golden years TOGETHER. These days their agenda is simple: relax, nap, and soak up the affection they’ve always deserved. Both pups are easy going, gentle souls who enjoy time outdoors in a fenced yard for sniffs, as well as indoor time for ample naps. These sweet pups are looking for a loving home that can offer a little extra understanding. They both experience some incontinence and take medication to help, but do have accidents. With patience, routine, and simple management tools like frequent potty breaks and washable diapers, they do well and continue to live happy, comfortable lives. They do not jump on furniture and are well behaved when left alone. Their foster home does not crate them. Chaplin can be a bit unsteady on stairs, so it’s best to monitor his access, especially if they aren’t carpeted which helps with his grip. Their DNA age tests show Chaplin is almost 10, and Heidi is about 8 months younger (as of 1/20/26) - a couple of years younger than first thought. Chaplin weighs 38 lbs., and Heidi 35 lbs. Both are spayed/neutered, heartworm negative, microchipped, and up‑to‑date on vaccinations. Chaplin has a permanent head tilt and slight gait unsteadiness, likely due to years of untreated ear infections. The head tilt doesn’t slow him down and a veterinarian, while in Homes Fur Hounds’ care, advised that with prompt treatment of any future ear infections, the neurological issue should not progress. He also has some scarring (“cauliflower ear”). His ears are comfortable now, but they should be handled gently, especially during weekly cleanings. Lately, we’ve noticed he may not hear as well as he used to, but his nose is as sharp as ever—he still shows up in the kitchen right on time for meals. Dansby is a beautiful beagle girl who is looking for a home. She is a 4 year old hunting beagle we took in with her sister Elsa. As you can see in the pictures, she is quickly falling in love with being an inside family pet. She even snuggles on the couch with her poodle foster sister. Dansby is very sweet and a bit shy at first. She is adjusting well to being a pet and has done really well with housebreaking. She is also discovering toys and likes to carry her toys around and take them to her bed. Dansby is not as food motivated as most beagles and will sometimes not even eat all her food. She is a slow eater and has no food aggression. She is friendly and playful with people and with the other foster dogs in the home. She was a little nervous at the vet's office but did fine. The longer she is here the more we see her wonderful, fun personality. Dansby does sometimes bark at other dogs when she is out walking on a leash. She will need some training with this issue. She is vaccinated, micro-chipped and spayed. She was heartworm negative when she arrived and has been on heartworm prevention but has now tested positive. Heartworms don't always show up in tests for 6 months so she was positive when she arrived and we did not know it. We have started her on the medication. At least we know she hasn't had them long.
