Story
Maisy is a 4-year-old dog that I adopted from a rescue and have cared for for the past three years. She is a wonderful companion who loves playing ball and is very responsive and easy to train. She forms strong bonds with people and prefers to be close to her person most of the time. She is affectionate and enjoys cuddling, often falling asleep while being held or resting next to you. She walks well on leash and is generally a calm, attentive dog in the home. The one behavioral issue Maisy has is resource guarding with other dogs. Because of this, she needs to live in a single-dog household. When another dog is present around high-value items such as toys or bones, she can become aggressive. Outside of this specific situation, she is a loving and well-behaved dog. She does well with cats. I have two cats at home and she has lived with them without problems. My hope had always been to keep Maisy for the rest of her life. However, I recently had to take in another dog unexpectedly who

Story
Looks like: Border Collie mix Male, 9 years old (estimated), 60 pounds Skipper is a 9-year-old Border Collie mix weighing in at a perfectly huggable 60 pounds of pure love. This handsome gentleman has mastered the art of connection: one look into his deep, soulful eyes and you'll feel like you've known him forever. Skipper is the definition of a lover. He's happiest when he's close to his people, leaning in for affection or stretching out beside you for long, cozy couch cuddles. Whether you're watching a movie, reading a book, or just enjoying a quiet evening at home, Skipper will be right there, content just to be by your side. While he may have a little silver around the muzzle, it only adds to his charm. At nine years old, he's past the puppy chaos and fully settled into his sweet, steady personality. He's the kind of dog who understands the value of companionship and gives his whole heart in return. If you're looking for a loyal best friend with gentle eyes, a warm presence, and plenty of love to give, Skipper is ready to claim his spot on your couch, and in your heart. Sweet Skipper is joining us from Hitchcock Road Animal Services, where he was found as a stray.

Story
Meet Malcolm, the border collie mix puppy! Malcolm arrived to the Shelter as a stray but has been appeasing, eager to connect and play. This energetic guy would thrive in a home with regular mental and physical stimulation. Adopters may want to do some breed research prior to adoption to see what border collies and herding breed dogs often need to succeed. Staff have observed that Malcom can be a little nervous in new situations and with new dogs. He would benefit from positive, thoughtful introductions with well-adjusted dogs in his next home. We don’t have any history of Malcolm with cats or children.Malcolm is available for pre-adoption at this time: adopters can come meet him, fall in love and take him home after his neuter surgery! The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
