Story
Introducing Zaida! This sweet border collie mix came to AFRP after she was found along the side of a road where a good samaritan stopped to help her. Now, she's thriving in foster care and ready to find her forever home! Zaida is an active girl, treat-motivated and loving as can be. She's on the hunt for a home with experienced adopters who have previously owned herding breeds and understand the extensive physical and mental stimulation required to make these pups thrive! Zaida would prefer to find a home as the only pup but does well with other dogs - she loves being the center of attention! She's not an apartment pup and will require a fenced-in yard to ensure she's able to have some space to get all of that energy out! Zaida will need an adult only family, or adopters with children over the age of 8 to continue her positive training and socialization. While in our care, Zaida has been diagnosed with idiopathic head tremor syndrome (IHTS), a benign condition characterized by focal head tremors of unknown cause. While this condition is not fully understood, Zaida's continuous head and body tremors are managed as part of her unique journey. Tremors do resolve over time, but some, such as Zaida, have continuous head and body tremors. Alongside this, Zaida is currently taking long-term medication to help alleviate symptoms of anxiety, as well as OCD. Meet and greets can be arranged once your online application has been received and approved. Visit www.animalfriendsrescue.org for our required online dog application.

Story
Looks like: Border Collie Mix Female, 10 years old (estimated), 51 pounds Sweet Sasha has had a difficult past, but it's been a true joy watching her come out of her shell and show her true colors - that of a loyal, sweet and happy border collie mix. Once she has settled into your home, you will find this gentle girl right by your side (preferably on a soft doggie bed) eager for love and affection. This little lady is looking for a forever home where she can spend her years surrounded by love and support. Sasha would do best in a calm, quiet home, which likely means that young children will not be a good fit. She does well with other calm dogs she meets while out and about and may thrive while living with such a 'furiend'. She has been living harmoniously with another large and more energetic dog in her foster home. She is very patient as her foster brother runs around her and she loves to lean against you to get attention. We have not yet seen Sasha interact with kitties. Sasha had surgery in the past to remove mammary masses. She has healed well from this and her coat is growing in so gorgeous, shiny, and full! As she started feeling better, she found her voice and started to give a few barks to alert her family members of strangers. She did go through a period of nipping at strangers who approached her but has shown significant improvement on this; her foster mom still gives her room from strangers while on walks but if foster mom starts to talk with someone close by, Sasha now waits quietly. On her walks, sweet talk and a treat to redirect her attention has worked wonders for helping her feel safe while out and about. Sasha is looking for her next person/family with patience to continue to work with her on any lingering anxiety and help her gain confidence. This persevering pup was found as a stray in Modesto and came to us from Stanislaus Animal Services so we could get her the medical care she needed.

Story
Magpie is a 9 month old Border Collie mix looking for his forever home. He was origianlly adopted out at 3 months old, but was recently returned as a large 9 month old, with minimal socialization. He needs some training and practice with his leash walking. He can be avoidant of the leash or harness going over his head initially, but once one he seems comfortable with it. Magpie will walk well on leash in areas that he is comfortable with, but if he is startled or there is a lot of noise (like the noisly kennels of the animal shelter) then he will dart to a safe corner or panic and start pulling back on the leash. Magpie needs an experienced dog owner that can continue to work with him to build confidence in new situations. When he is in a quiet yard or room, Magpie is a wonderful canine companion. He`s a little quirky (collie mix) but he loves toys and is playful. He has good indoor manners and seems to have some potty training. He responds to the command `down` too. Magpie does well off leash with small breed dogs and has done well on leash with large breed dogs that are not barking at him. Come and visit Magpie and fall in love with him at Hitchcock Road Animal Services.Available for foster with an experienced candidate that can work with him on his training and leash walking.

Story
Meet Kylie! This herding breed girl is looking for a herding-breed savvy adopter to be the right match. Kylie has been noted to be social and wiggly by Shelter staff. We do not have any history of Kylie with children. She loves to run and will thrive in a home that provides above average activity. Agility activities like cat walks, tunnels, and weave poles may be a great way for an adopter to channel Kylie’s energy and smarts for good! Kylie has met dogs at the Shelter – similar size and smaller – and has interacted nicely. A home with another dog is likely a fit provided they meet at the Shelter prior to adoption. Kylie’s play style is likely rooted in her breed make up so a home with a dog that enjoys a game of place and is generally not bothered by some herding behaviors is best. We do not have any history of Kylie with cats besides some observations of her seeing them out in the world. Kylie’s adopters should anticipate putting energy towards positive reinforcement based training to help her learn life skills and manners such as crate training and potty training. In return, this sweet goofy gal will keep her adopters on their toes and laughing all day. Interested in meeting? Come on down to the Shelter today.

WEIGHT: TBDMeet Huey, Dewey, and Louie- They are puppies. They are cute. They have little black and white speckled paws. They are going to be big! At 3 months old, these puppies are already larger and many of their neighbors here at the shelter. They are very good-natured and don't seem to exhibit some of the less desirable puppy behaviors like hard-mouthing and jumping, but they are still young and will need adopters that are ready to consider enrolling in puppy classes and/or starting an at-home positive reinforcement training plan. Think that you're ready to bring home a mystery sized dog? Feel free to call our adoptions desk or stop by during Browsing Hours: Wed-Sun 11-5.

These pups are in Pacific Grove, California too!

Story
Introducing Phantom! This sweet pup came into our care with his two siblings as a result of an accidental breeding. Phantom was born completely blind, but this doesn't slow him down! He is quite the gentle pup and uses those little ears of his to lead the way and he's adapted great to this new style of life. His foster let us know that Phantom has a knack for finding his way into your heart, as he'll happily sit or lay by, or even on your feet, offering a sense of comfort and warmth. His funny and playful nature will keep you entertained, and he's always up for a game of follow-the-leader, either by lead or scent. This water-loving pup is a true "water puppy," loving the joy of swimming and playing in the river. Blindness doesn't slow Phantom down; in fact, it adds to his charm and resilience. He navigates the world with grace and enthusiasm, proving that love knows no boundaries. His playful demeanor extends to other dogs, and he's known to be good with cats but would prefer a home with an experienced adult owner or a family with older children who have previously worked with special needs dogs (preferably blind dogs). His future owner would be someone who is home throughout the day with him, able to continue positive training and socialization for his safety. Pre-registration for general obedience classes is a requirement for adoption. Phantom is currently in foster care. Meet and greets can be arranged once your online application has been approved. Introducing Grace, AKA Amazing Grace! This sweet pup came into our care with her two siblings as a result of an accidental breeding. Grace was born completely deaf and blind, but this doesn't slow her down! Her amazing nose leads her on adventures out on the trail, in the mountains, and into any body of water, making her a true explorer at heart. Learning through scent and touch, Grace has adapted beautifully to her surroundings. Her ultra-sweet nature shines through, making her a joy to be around. Grace is not only super playful but also remarkably resilient, she can stand up to any dog while playing and absolutely loves a good game of tug of war. Grace's housebroken manners are impeccable, provided she knows the location of her designated potty spot and has access to the outdoors. Remarkably, she never loses her temper, showcasing her gentle and patient disposition. Grace does great with both dogs and cats, but any introductions would have to be done slowly and over time. Grace's future adopters would preferably be an experienced owner or family with older children that have previously owned a special needs animal (preferably blind or deaf). It is vital that her positive training is continued not only for her socialization but for her safety as well. There's more to Grace than just her resilience; she's a true kissy face lovebug. Her affectionate nature knows no bounds, and her presence is a heartwarming reminder that love and joy can thrive in any circumstance. Pre-registration for general obedience classes is a requirement for adoption. Grace is currently in foster care. Meet and greets can be arranged once your online application has been approved.
