Story
With heavy hearts, we are looking for the right forever home for our sweet puppy. After losing our dog of 14 years, we made an emotional decision to adopt a herding breed puppy. She is wonderful with people and loves everyone, but we’ve realized our limited yard space and busy work schedules are not what she needs to thrive. We rescued her at 15 weeks old; she will be 7 months on 1/22 and weighs about 37 lbs. She does well in a crate and prefers a more enclosed space (currently using a Ruffland kennel). On leash, she can be reactive to other dogs, but her wagging tail suggests frustration rather than aggression. We believe she would greatly benefit from continued training with someone experienced in herding breeds. She deserves a home with space to run and an owner who understands the mental and physical needs of a working breed. This decision has been incredibly difficult, but our priority is giving her the life she truly deserves. Thank you for helping us find the right fit.

Walks well on leash and approached adjacent kennels to smell calmly. Would hesitate when passing staff while walking but would quickly return to walking after some baby talking. Fairly stiff posture when outside of kennel. No issues vaccinating, dog remained very docile and allowed invasive handling; attempted to pull away but did not escalate. No issues walking back to room or reaching over to remove leash.

Story
Meet Zaida! If you’ve been searching for a sweet, silly, treat-powered sidekick, Zaida’s your girl. This gorgeous border collie mix was rescued after being found on the side of the road, and she’s gone from rags to zoomies in no time. Now she’s living her best foster life and is officially ready to find her forever family! Zaida is basically the definition of main character energy. She loves being the center of attention, thrives on praise (and snacks, obviously), and has perfected the art of dramatic herding-dog stares. She’s not here for apartment life, this girl needs a yard to live out her zoomie dreams. Think of her as your personal Peloton instructor, but fuzzier and way cuter. She’s also a one-of-a-kind pup with her own quirks. Zaida has a condition called idiopathic head tremor syndrome (IHTS)—translation: sometimes her head and body do little wiggles of their own. It’s benign and just part of her unique vibe. Along with that, she’s on long-term meds to help with anxiety and OCD, which help her stay her sweet, snuggly, happy self. Zaida would do best with experienced adopters who understand herding breeds and are ready to keep her brain and body busy. She prefers to be the solo diva in the house but does fine with other dogs too. No tiny humans under 8, please, she’s still working on her social graces. ** This pet is a Foster-to-Adopt candidate! That means you can foster them for a short trial period to make sure they’re the perfect match for your home before finalizing the adoption. If you’re interested, please complete both a foster application and an adoption application so we can get the process started. ** Zaida is currently in a loving foster home. A meet and greet can be scheduled once an online adoption application has been submitted and approved by AFRP staff. Visit www.animalfriendsrescue.org to fill one out today!

Story
I adopted Ellie from someone in Modesto through Craigslist when she was about 6 months old. Ellie is now 3 years old. She is very energetic and friendly with everyone and other children, and loves to jump on people and be petted. When she meets other dogs, she will initially bark and run around them, and it takes her a while to get close because she's not an outdoor dog; we always keep her indoors. I adopted her when I had been living alone for two years, and my landlord needed to take the house back for renovations, so we had to move back in with my parents. My father has a history of asthma and sometimes has difficulty breathing, and his condition has worsened since being exposed to dog hair. When we first moved back, we kept her indoors. Her daily routine was that in the morning she would go out to the backyard to play and run around, and in the evening she would sleep in the garage (she has a heated bed to keep her warm). But now my father's health has worsened so...

These pups are in Santa Cruz, California too!

Story
HI - I'M PACO! I am a sweet 1-year-old Australian Cattle Dog mix in need of a forever home! I was rescued from the streets of Ensenada, Mexico, by a compassionate Canadian couple who then tried to find me a home. Eventually I was placed in a rescue and am doing great! Now, I spend my days running around, playing with my doggy pals, and then taking a much needed nap! I weigh only 40 lbs and am a happy, fun-loving boy. I am an affectionate sweetheart and love nothing more than to snuggle. I'm also fully housebroken and great with cats! Personality-wise, I'm quite mellow but I do get excited when I'm showered with love and attention. I can't wait to become someone's best friend! Please email for an application.

Story
Meet Saxon, a very handsome blonde `California Coast Shepherd!` We don`t know if he`s into surfing, and we don`t actually know what breeds might be in his background, but we do know that Saxon arrived with Motley, who`s likely Saxon`s brother and whose coat colors are an interesting blue merle... Both dogs are medium-large with fairly easy-care coats like heelers or short-haired shepherds, lean, athletic builds, and active, intelligent personalities. Motley has already been adopted so now it is Saxon`s turn! Saxon walks nicely on leash and is attentive to his handler, loves to go for walks and adventures, but is a cuddler in calm, indoor settings. He`s met Maya, a female German Shepherd, and enjoyed playing with her. A dog friend in the home may be a match, especially if they`re into active play with plenty of running and light wrestling. We’d recommend any resident dogs meet at the Shelter prior to adoption. We do not have a history of Saxon with children or cats. Saxon`s adoption fee has been sponsored by the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation`s Leave No One Behind fund- a fund that draws adopter`s eyes towards animals that have been waiting a little bit longer than average for the right adopters to come along and bring them home. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
