🐶 🐕 BAXTER Male Border collie Approximately 1 Year, 40 lbs & AVAILABLE – check out more photos and see the rest of our dogs on our website -- https://norcalbcrescue.org/available-dogs/our-dogs/ 🐕 🐶 Meet BAXTER (aka BAX). You haven’t lived until you’ve met BAXTER. This boy is so friendly that he simply cannot “hold his licker.” BAXTER loves everyone: people as well as other dogs. When he first came into rescue, he learned quickly not to jump up on people (GOOD BOY). He plays with other friendly dogs, but his 1st choice is always people. If people are around, so is BAX. Being only a little over 1 year old and weighing about 40 lbs, BAXTER can still act like a typically rambunctious young border collie: all tongue and legs and with energy to spare. He will need a family who can give him a proper outlet for this energy and keen desire for fun and stimulating things to do. The old adage “a tired dog is a good dog” certainly applies to BAXTER. Even with all this energy, BAXTER can still relax with you indoors by your side or in his crate. BAXTER is as smart as he is beautiful. His soulful, chocolate-colored eyes will steal your heart. He has not shown any aggressive behavior in his foster home. He would do equally well with a buddy/sibling or as an only dog. Like most border collies he wants his person’s attention focused on him, and he can sometimes get jealous when other dogs get what he considers HIS belly rubs; that said, he is learning to be patient and wait for his turn. BAXTER thrives in the outdoors where he can run fast (in safe areas) and explore all the different smells. This helps to stimulate his BC brain during long walks and adventures. This boy loves the water and, of course, rolling in the dirt. Dry him off and, like a cat, he will clean himself up until next time. BAXTER is learning to walk nicely on the leash, but he will benefit from additional leash training. BAXTER is a very fast runner and with proper training his foster mom thinks he might be good agility partner or a fine candidate for one of the other fun dog sports. Like most all BC’s, BAXTER needs lots of daily exercise and stimulation to help him thrive both physically and mentally. When the weather was bad, his foster mom introduced him to “brain games” such as puzzles, snuffle mats, and indoor hide and seek. He has learned a few obedience commands like sit, lay down, and wait. BAX definitely knows what the word “no” means. Because BAXTER is still a youngster with a lot to learn, he needs someone with training experience and time to spend to help him become the best dog he can be. BAXTER is more on the submissive side, and he is very sensitive to harsh discipline; therefore, a firm but softer voice is best. He wants to do the right thing and to please. He is both treat and praise motivated, with a slight lean towards praise, so training sessions can be fun and rewarding. He does like car rides; he jumps right in and is a great traveler. BAXTER is crate-trained and sleeps quietly through the night, but he is ready to start the day when you get up. BAX is also house trained, and sometimes has whined to let his foster mom know when he needs to go outside to potty. BAXTER is looking for someone who has border collie experience, as well as time and energy, so he can become the best companion he can be. If you think you might have what it takes to be that special person for our handsome border collie boy, BAXTER is waiting to meet you. BAXTER is micro-chipped, neutered, heartworm negative and on preventative, and up-to-date on vaccinations. If you have an approved Northern California Border Collie Rescue & Adoptions Adoption Application (https://norcalbcrescue.org/adoption/adoption-application/) and wish to inquire about BAXTER, please email us at Adoptions@norcalbcrescue.org. If you have an approved adoption application with Border Collie Rescue of Northern California let us know and we will request it be forwarded to us for consideration. BAXTER is fostering in Nevada City, Nevada County, CA.
