Story
Looks like: Border Collie mix Female, 5 years old (estimated), 53 pounds Fern is looking for a home that will give her lots of exercise - a couple of runs daily would be ideal. If you are looking for a running or hiking buddy, Fern would love to be your gal. Fern has an active mind. She is learning the difference between what she is allowed to play with and what is off limits. She is very good at entertaining herself by dragging large dog beds around the house. She loves other dogs, and she is intrigued by cats, but doesn't hurt them. People outside of her usual pack are scary. She is skittish in places she doesn't know and jumps at sudden sounds. She currently lives in a remote area and will likely adjust once she has more positive experiences. Fern was found as a stray in a rural area of Monterey County, and sadly no one came looking for her. We can't wait for this beautiful girl to bond with her people and blossom in time!

Story
Meet Zaida! If you’ve been searching for a sweet, silly, treat-powered sidekick, Zaida’s your girl. This gorgeous border collie mix was rescued after being found on the side of the road, and she’s gone from rags to zoomies in no time. Now she’s living her best foster life and is officially ready to find her forever family! Zaida is basically the definition of main character energy. She loves being the center of attention, thrives on praise (and snacks, obviously), and has perfected the art of dramatic herding-dog stares. She’s not here for apartment life, this girl needs a yard to live out her zoomie dreams. Think of her as your personal Peloton instructor, but fuzzier and way cuter. She’s also a one-of-a-kind pup with her own quirks. Zaida has a condition called idiopathic head tremor syndrome (IHTS)—translation: sometimes her head and body do little wiggles of their own. It’s benign and just part of her unique vibe. Along with that, she’s on long-term meds to help with anxiety and OCD, which help her stay her sweet, snuggly, happy self. Zaida would do best with experienced adopters who understand herding breeds and are ready to keep her brain and body busy. She prefers to be the solo diva in the house but does fine with other dogs too. No tiny humans under 8, please, she’s still working on her social graces. ** This pet is a Foster-to-Adopt candidate! That means you can foster them for a short trial period to make sure they’re the perfect match for your home before finalizing the adoption. If you’re interested, please complete both a foster application and an adoption application so we can get the process started. ** Zaida is currently in a loving foster home. A meet and greet can be scheduled once an online adoption application has been submitted and approved by AFRP staff. Visit www.animalfriendsrescue.org to fill one out today!

Story
Meet Maple the Collie mix! Maple came to the Shelter after her previous guardians reported that she had a bit too much interest in chasing the chickens in the home and were unable to manage that behavior. Maple lived with other dogs and dog-savvy cats in her previous home whom she enjoyed playing with. She spent the majority of her time outdoors in her previous home, so she may need some patience in the transition to her new home in regards to things like potty training. Maple has lived with children, was reported to be sociable with strangers, and she does well riding in the car. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Nyssa is a 3-4 year-old spayed female Border Collie, around 40 lbs, who was rescued from a local CA shelter. Sadly, before finding herself abandoned and alone at the shelter, she likely grew up in the backyard confined to a kennel. Nyssa is now learning to live as a domestic pet. Amazingly and despite this, she remains a lively, energetic, and otherwise healthy dog who is remarkably intelligent, craves human interaction, and is very loyal to her hooman. Nyssa is intelligent, already understanding various commands such as "sit," "leave it" “sit pretty” and "inside” to go into the house.  She is also deeply loyal to her guardian and has a strong capacity for forming deep bonds typical of her breed. She is truly a remarkable dog who has the capacity to grow into an even more amazing companion through continued obedience training and by establishing a trusting relationship with her guardian. Nyssa is incredibly affectionate and loves people. She can be around other dogs without being on leash reactive. However, off leash and once confident, she has a habit of herding dogs, considering the trait of her breed. Nyssa loves to play ball and might be a Treibball enthusiast!  She walks well on a loose leash, crate trained and housebroken and sleeps through the night on her dog bed. Tested well with cats, but like with dogs, once confident, it is possible she may try to herd them, so possible she may need supervision/management.  Ther Ideal Family for Nyssa is: &#226&#156&#148&#239&#184&#143 Someone who understands her breed Border Collies, her adjustment to living in a home, and provides her sufficient mental and physical stimulation. &#226&#156&#148&#239&#184&#143 Someone who values bonding with their dog and is ready to build a deep connection. &#226&#156&#148&#239&#184&#143 Someone who can provide yard space for Nyssa to move and exercise freely. Nyssa still loves people and finds her greatest happiness in being with her Hooman. With so much intelligence and energy Nyssa has limitless potential to become your perfect lifelong companion. Her right family, is one that understands her and is ready to provide her with love, care and proper training – then she is your girl!
