Story
Meet Cocoa!
Cocoa is an 11-month-old Mini Australian Shepherd/Border Collie mix weighing just 14 pounds who came to us alongside her sister, Oreo, after their owner could no longer care for them.
When the girls arrived, they both had wounds across their backs from harnesses that had been worn too tightly for an extended period of time. Their fur may grow back completely, or they may carry a few scars as a reminder of their past. Either way, Cocoa is an absolutely gorgeous little girl with her whole life ahead of her!
Of the two sisters, Cocoa is the more confident and outgoing one. She's still a little leery when meeting new people or experiencing unfamiliar places and situations, but she's generally quicker to investigate and warm up.
And if you'd like to speed up the friendship process, there's one thing you should know...
This girl LOVES snacks.
Cocoa is extremely food motivated, which is not only a great way to win her over, but should also be a huge help when it comes to training and building positive associations with new experiences.
While Oreo tends to look to Cocoa for reassurance, Cocoa has happily taken on the role of the more confident, and occasionally a little bossy , big personality of the pair. Although the sisters are very attached to one another, we believe giving them the opportunity to grow individually may ultimately be beneficial. Cocoa deserves the chance to build a relationship with her own people, experience new things independently, and continue developing into the confident little dog we know she can be.
At only 11 months old, Cocoa is young, adorable, and FULL of potential.
She may need some guidance with house training and will benefit from patience while adjusting to a new home. Once she's comfortable, continued positive socialization and gradual exposure to visitors, new places, car rides, and everyday life will help her learn that new experiences don't have to be scary.
Dogs: We expect Cocoa to be dog friendly! As always, proper introductions are important when meeting new canine friends.
Cats: She has not been tested with cats yet. We will update once we know more!
Kids: She has not been tested with children yet. Because she can still be cautious with unfamiliar people, slow introductions and children who understand how to respect her space would be best.
Cocoa may be the braver sister, but she's still learning about the big world outside of everything she's known. What she needs now is someone willing to give her patience, consistency, new experiences, and plenty of snacks along the way.
Cocoa is ready to find out just how good life can be.
