Neeka's life has been a bit of a roller coaster and she is looking to coast into the station and take it easy for the rest of her time. She has lived with other dogs but is ready for her own space, she met and played well with another dog but once out of TJO the play style of both dogs escalated. Neeka came back to TJO having decided that she is done with non-human roommates and is looking forward to someone who will enjoy her pretending to be a lap dog.OTHER PETS: Neeka needs her own space and will only be adopted out as a single pet. [Only Pet]OWNER EXPERIENCE: Experience with positive reinforcement or willingness to learn will be an ideal fit. Neeka is a playful girl who is working on keeping all paws on the floor, and loose-leash walking with high value treats and patience as she learns while having fun. Friendly, well-socialized, sweet temperament, initially a little shy with strangers.. Great with other dogs. Fine with cats. Loves kids and is gentle with the foster family’s young kids. Medium activity outside, quiet and well-mannered inside. Good house manners and low maintenance. Affectionate with her people and loves to cuddle. Crate trained and housebroken.  Good on the leash, rides great in the car. Estimated DOB is 12-1-25. Weighs about 40 pounds. Healthy and fully vetted, current on shots. Meet Spade! A spirited two-and-a-half-year-old Boxer/American Pitbull Terrier mix currently in Tinton Falls, NJ, whose essence is a vibrant burst of joy wrapped in a sleek black coat with striking white accents. At around 55 pounds, Spade is a medium-sized charmer who has mastered the art of being both a playful goofball and an affectionate constant companion. If he had his way, he would spend every day curled up as close to his favorite people as possible! Whether he is soaking up sunshine in the yard, roughhousing with enthusiasm, or snuggling beneath a blanket, Spade approaches life with his whole heart. One of his most endearing quirks is his nightly blanket routine. He loves wiggling and burrowing until he creates the perfect cozy nest for sleep. He is also a huge fan of rump scratches and responds with an adorable full-body dance when you find just the right spot! Crinkle toys and interactive toys keep him entertained, and he enjoys car rides, swimming adventures, and plenty of outdoor enrichment in a fully fenced yard. Spade knows “sit” and “paw,” is house-trained, neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations. He does well when left alone for reasonable periods and follows a simple routine of twice-daily meals, exercise, and relaxation. Loud noises, storms, and strangers approaching the house can make him uneasy, and he receives daily Fluoxetine to help manage anxiety. Spade needs a loving home where he can be the only pet. As he matured, he developed resource guarding behaviors around food, toys, and other high-value items, which led to serious altercations with another dog in the home that required intervention and veterinary care. Because these situations can arise with little warning, he is not compatible with other dogs or cats and needs a pet-free environment where he can feel secure. With people, Spade is incredibly affectionate and has no history of biting. He prefers not to be disturbed while eating and may give a brief growl if startled awake from a deep sleep to communicate that he needs space. He does best with calm, respectful teenagers or young adults who understand canine boundaries. In the right home, Spade's loving, goofy, and devoted personality truly shines! HOOCH IS STRUGGLING IN THE SHELTER ENVIRONMENT:Meet sweet Hooch, this big, happy boy is beginning to struggle at the shelter and needs a place where he can decompress and learn the comforts of home. What makes Hooch special? He has little to no vision, but it doesn’t stop him at all from loving life, even if he bumps into something on occasion! However, due to his limited vision he can give conflicting signals to other dogs including a hard stare (unintentionally), and he will take time to learn another dog’s cues and communication. Because this can lead to misunderstandings, he may be most suitable as an only dog. However, if you have a larger, mellow, social dog who can brush off awkward interactions, and doesn't mind rough and tumble play, make sure to bring your dog for a meet to see if there's a potential match (case by case).Hooch will thrive in a home that has a predictable layout and routine so he can decompress slowly and settle into his new environment. It is not required to have experience with a blind pup, just a willingness to learn and adjust along with him, as well as experience with positive reinforcement to set him up for success and a happy future! Hooch will also do best with older kids (15+) who will give him space, move slowly, and learn about a dog’s body language (see the link under ‘resources’ on our website). Hooch may startle at sounds or sudden shifts, going slowly and allowing him to set the pace will be important as he finds his way and decompresses. Minors and pups should be actively supervised to keep everyone safe and comfortable. Hooch is an active dog who enjoys a good romp in a fenced area, but he is happy to relax as long as his favorite people are around to keep up with his `subtle` requests for attention (he'll turn around and lean his back end into your legs while he waits for you to pet him!). He does pull on the leash with excitement and would benefit from learning loose-leash walking with positive reinforcement. Providing Hooch with regular exercise combined with plenty of mental enrichment such as food puzzles, sniffing time, games, and learning new tricks (which he has loved with volunteers) will help fully meet his needs, keep his mind and body active, and prevent boredom. Because he showing signs of stress at the shelter he will likely take longer to feel safe in a new home during such a big transition, but with support and guidance we can help with the process of acclimating him to a new environment. While we believe Hooch is around three years old, he was found to be blind upon arrival at TJO. We do not have a definitive answer as to what the cause of his blindness is, but there is no concern about any underlying condition at this time. He will likely do well with routine appointments with a primary vet, but may need to be monitored a little more closely due to his impairment. Interested in meeting this fabulous boy? Introducing Fancy! She has been social with humans, but less so with dogs. She’ll sniff and check out other dogs but so far has not been interested in play or social time with dogs. It’s possible she might enjoy the company of another dog, but a meet n’ greet is required if there’s a resident dog. Overall Fancy enjoys being social with her human friends, but she can also be anxious. As with all dogs, experience with positive reinforcement, or willingness to learn, is the best way to create happy associations to the world while building new skills and confidence. While this can change in a home, there has been mild resource-guarding with subtle signals. The safest way to manage resource-guarding is by ‘trading up’ with something of equal or higher value tossed to the side so the original item can safely be removed. This also helps a dog learn that valuable things will always be available instead of removed and reduces anxiety around the loss of prized possessions. Due to the mild resource-guarding we’ve seen at the shelter, she is best suited to older children, 15+ who can give her space, and learn how to read body language (link under 'resources' on our website). Minors should be actively supervised to be sure everyone is safe and comfortable, and important signals aren’t missed. As a younger pup she will thrive with regular exercise combined with plenty of mental enrichment such as food puzzles, sniffing time, learning new tricks, and playtime to keep her mind and body active while preventing boredom. Positive reinforcement to keep learning fun, and effective management (setting her environment up for success) will help Fancy learn important skills, create a strong bond with her guardian, and help build confidence, all while having fun. To keep her happy and healthy, she’ll benefit from regular visits to the vet.
