Story

Kush is an 8 year old chiweenie. He’s been with us for the past 6 years and has been a great companion and member of our family. He’s also been difficult, with high baseline anxiety and is extremely protective of my wife. He’s bitten me a few times over the years as a result. We recently had a son (who’s now 2 years old) and initially things were going OK with Kush. We had him on Prozac and he was fairly calm with no biting issues or even close calls. He recently stopped eating his food and taking his medication. Per the vet’s guidance, we stopped the medication so he’d start eating again. However, he’s become far more anxious, growling at our son and recently bit him. It’s heartbreaking, but we can no longer have kush in our household given the risks. When my wife isn’t present, he doesn’t seem to present nearly as high levels of anxiety though, as indicated by the times when it’s just been him and I and when he goes to his dog boarder, with whom he’s had absolutely no issues.

Meet Marshmallow! Marshmallow is a 2-year-old, 16 lb Chiweenie who came to us from a large hoarding case of over 30 dogs — and he’s making an incredible comeback! Despite his rough start, this sweet boy has blossomed into a loving, snuggly companion who’s ready to find his forever home. True to his name, Marshmallow is as soft and sweet as can be. He LOVES cuddles and would happily spend all day curled up in your lap if he could. Once he trusts you, he’s affectionate, loyal, and eager to please. He’s also recently discovered the joy of toys — especially his favorite stuffed animals — and is starting to show his playful, goofy side. Marshmallow enjoys walks and has plenty of energy when he’s out exploring, but inside he’s all about that cozy couch life. He walks nicely on a leash (though he can be a little jumpy with loud noises) and travels quietly on public transit — he’s a great little adventure buddy! He’s done wonderfully with other dogs and cats, preferring calm, friendly company over rough play. While he can be unsure around men at first, with patience and positive reinforcement he’s learning that they can be friends too. Marshmallow is still working on house training and overcoming a bit of resource guarding, but he’s made amazing progress in foster care. With consistency, time, and love, this brave little survivor will continue to thrive. He’s looking for a calm, loving home — someone who can help him continue to build confidence, celebrate his milestones, and enjoy all the snuggles he’s so eager to give. Wizard came to us from a heartbreaking situation — a home with over 30 dogs living in unsafe conditions. Thanks to the efforts of multiple rescues (including ours!), Wizard and his friends finally got their chance at a better life. Despite his rough start, Wizard’s resilience shines through every day. He’s housebroken, crate-trained, and making great progress learning to use the doggy door. He’s still working on his leash training, but he’s such a smart boy that he’s picking it up quickly! Wizard loves toys, especially ones he can chase or squeak, and he’ll happily entertain himself or join in a play session with his humans. Bertie is a very sweet rescue dog that loves being around people. She is about 3 years old (estimated age) and 28 pounds. We adopted her from St. Hubert's in Madison, NJ, and they had little information about her history. She loves to sit on the couch next to you and have her ears scratched. She enjoys walks and walks well on a leash. She does not have a ton of energy, but will fetch a ball or toy a few times while playing. She is fully housebroken and does not chew or destroy furniture when she is bored or anxious. She knows the commands SIT, STAY, DOWN, WAIT, CRATE, and GO TO BED (she will stay in her bed for the entire time we are eating). She is working on loose leash walking and only pulls when she gets a good scent or sees another dog. We are rehoming Bertie because our older dog does not get along with her, and we are unable to rehome him. She does well with all people and older children. We do not know how she is with young children or cats since we do not have any
