You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Meet Layla — A Gentle Soul Learning to Trust   Layla is a sweet but shy girl who’s just beginning to discover what it means to truly be a dog. Until recently, she lived in a breeding facility — one of those “moms behind the curtain,” raising litters of puppies adored by many, while her own world stayed small and lonely.   Now safe and loved in foster care, Layla is slowly finding her footing in this big new world. After two months, she’s finally comfortable lying in the same room as her human and, with some gentle encouragement, comes over for soft pets. Progress is happening — it’s just at her pace.   Layla’s journey reminds us that healing takes time. There’s no magic switch to make her a “normal” dog overnight. She needs a family that understands this — one that will offer patience, compassion, and space while celebrating every little victory along the way.   Because of her shyness, Layla will thrive best in:   A calm home with no small children A fenced yard, so she can explore safely A confident dog friend, to show her the ropes and help her feel secure A Note About Safety and Flight Risk   During her first month in foster care, Layla was a significant flight risk. Once she got outside into her fenced yard, there was no getting her back in — she would hide behind trees and go straight into flight mode. For that reason, her future family must be extremely cautious and understand she will need a long lead when outdoors, even within a fenced area. Her foster mom can provide detailed guidance on how to help Layla feel safe, build trust, and learn how to calmly come in and out of the home.   Everyday Challenges   Layla is still working on mastering everyday dog skills. She hasn’t yet learned how to navigate stairs — a single step down she can manage, but multiple steps, such as those on a deck or inside a home, are still too overwhelming for her right now. With time, patience, and encouragement, she may overcome this.   One of Layla’s quirks: she won’t eat from a bowl. It’s a reminder of her past — when bowls likely meant stress or fear. Her foster mom hand-feeds her by scooping her food into her kennel, and Layla happily gobbles it up! She’s also a bit picky about her meals, but her foster can share all the details.   Layla may be a “designer breed,” but she’s also a survivor — a gentle heart ready to learn that love can last forever. With understanding and time, she’ll blossom into the loyal companion she was always meant to be.    Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.Interested in adopting this lovable animal? Story
Grenas (born approx 11/8/21) is my first cockapoo and apparently, they’re very sweet dogs. Grenas is an absolute love. He is shy and his favorite place for his first week with me was under my sofa. However, no matter how timid he feels, his tail is always wagging. It took a bit for him to not pull away when I moved to pet him. He doesn’t like hands coming at him from above in a way that makes me think he may have been abused. A woman who works outside collects strays she notices, and that’s how he came to NDLB. We don’t know anything about his history. The day I took him, I also took a little chi mix foster, Lourdes. They had never met before, but they were instant friends and have become best pals. They play, wrestle, snuggle and sometimes sleep together. Grenas loved Lourdes right away, while it took some time before he was totally comfortable with me. For this reason, I think he would do best in a home with another dog. I think a dog friend makes him feel more secure. He is mostly potty trained. The few accidents he’s had happened because I didn’t let him out in time. My schedule can be random and I expect with a set schedule he would have no accidents. I don’t crate because it doesn’t work well in my home, but he would like a crate if he doesn’t have another place to make a ‘den.’ (Under the sofa is his safe place here, but my sofa is raised on legs and easy to get under.) He is awesome in the car. Just lays down in the back seat the whole ride. He loves treats and is food motivated, which makes training easier. He couldn’t care less about his kibble and he grazes his meals. He was terribly matted when I got him and had to be shaved. The groomer said one shoulder was so matted he had some bruising! He won’t let me put a jacket on him yet and so I haven’t walked him much, but he’s fine with the leash. He will bark sometimes at stuff going on outside and he will snap at Lourdes if she plays too rough, but otherwise, he has zero aggression. I’ve not seen him with kids, but I’m positive he would be fine. He shouldn’t be in a home with rambunctious kids as that would make him nervous. I would not describe him as a ‘hardy’ dog even if he did live outside for a while. Once he’s comfortable, he loves pets and a little wrestling, but is never clingy or demanding. He sleeps with me at least part of the night. He is not really a lap dog. He got out once, and it took a minute or two to get him back in, but he didn’t go anywhere. My backyard is fenced so he is let out back freely. The only issue anyone could have with Grenas is his shyness. For anyone not wanting a social butterfly type of dog, he’s a total prize. Story
Ms. Coco is a breeder release that is loving the home life and all the wonderful things it has to offer. Coco is 10 lbs of pure silly poodle. She is coming out of her shell and discovering all things good, like couches, tennis balls, and a loving touch from humans. She did have all BUT 5 teeth pulled but that doesn't stop her from eating crunchy food or chewing on doggie toys. She has a cataract in one of her eyes but that isn't any issue for her, she sees all the leaves outside and chases them when they blow in the wind ( like I said she's silly). Coco is fine with cats and really would prefer another dog in the house to show her the routine, however, the more I spend time with her, I realize that if she were an only dog she would be ok as long as her human was near so she can check in on them. Coco with going potty is rather easy, if she hops off the couch, she should probably go out to potty. Really that is her cue, just getting off the couch, she really loves the couch that much,  I can only assume it's because it is way better than the kennel she spent all of her 8 yrs in before coming into rescue. Coco is very sweet; however, she is shy until she gets comfortable with a new person but that is typical of dogs in new places and new people. Coco loves chin scratches and head rubs and will almost climb in your lap if you start, so be prepared that if you start, you may never be able to stop because she loves it that much.           Adoption fee includes: Full veterinary exam, Alter, Prepaid microchip, Dewormed, dental, Rabies vaccine (if age appropriate), Distemper combo vaccine(s) appropriate to age, Bordetella vaccine, 4DX (over 6 months of age), Flea/tick and heartworm preventative while in rescue. Story
Age: DOB 3/9/25 Weight: 17lbs Dog friendly: Yes Cat friendly: Yes, with dog savvy cats Kid friendly: Unknown Potty trained: Almost! Crate trained: Yes REQUIRED: Physical fenced yard & another dog within the home Hi! I'm Frannie! The happiest and most joyful cocker spaniel you'll ever meet. I can't wait to meet my new family and become part of your lives forever. I'm still a puppy with an endless supply of puppy energy and love to give to my entire family. I love everything soft and snuggly: blankets, pillows, beds (human and dog), sweaters (do you know how cold it is in these MN winters???) and even more than all of that stuff, I love to snuggle and cuddle on the shoulder or in the lap of my humans. Chin and ear scratches are the BEST and sometimes they even make me fall asleep. Oh - and I love to give you puppy kisses, too. I hope you like puppy kisses - they're just one way I show you how much I love you!!! I'm a very good eater, too (food is awesome!!) I'm currently on the same schedule as my foster brother and sister, so I eat breakfast each morning around 6 a.m. and dinner is served promptly at 5 p.m. - or else my foster Mom is gonna hear about it from me and my foster siblings!! I also get these awesome things throughout the day called treats - and man are they yummy. Usually I get them every time I go outside and potty and whenever I "sit" - but if I had it my way, I'd have full access to that jar of treats all day long. They are soooo yummy. Speaking of potty training...my foster Mom says I am a super fast learner and have nearly mastered my potty training skills since coming to their family one week ago. It's super important that I have a routine and as long as my family and I stick to that routine, I am perfect (duh - does she know who she's talking about? I'm obviously perfect all the time!) I don't even mind my crate if my foster Mom and Dad have to leave for a while - after all, the big human house is a bit overwhelming for a young pup like me, so my crate makes me feel safe and with one of my stuffie toys and my blankets, I snuggle right in until they're back home. If you'll let me, I'd prefer to snuggle right next to you in your big bed at night, but I will also sleep in my kennel if needed. TOYS!!! Have we talked about toys yet?!?! I LOVE them. LOVE. THEM. Especially the stuffies with crinkle paper in them. They are the best and I will play with them with another dog or on my own. I like to stash my toys and will also steal my favorite human's socks, sweatshirts and slippers to add to my stash pile. I don't even chew on them - I just like to have them near me if I can't have my human nearby. I am so excited to meet my new family and am ready to open my heart and share all my love and joy with you. We're going to be the best team. **Frannie is still learning to walk on a leash and came to us very scared/skittish of a leash, so if her new family has a fully fenced backyard where she can run, play and potty safely while she continues her leash training that is ideal. She is still pretty skittish when the leash comes out and I'd hate to see her bolt unexpectedly if she was in a backyard without a fence while she's still learning.** Adoption fee: $695
