Cheerio the Bestest Boy is what would happen if a woodland creature, a teddy bear, and a cartoon puppy all got together and decided to make the cutest dog on planet earth. Seriously — this boy looks unreal. One icy blue eye, one chocolate brown eye, giant satellite-dish ears, tiny corgi legs, fluffy border collie vibes, and the softest fur ever created. We’re calling him a Corgi-Australian Cattle dog mix, but as with all rescue pups, that’s just our best guess, his official breed is 100% Certified Good Boy. At just 7 months old, Cheerio has already perfected the art of stealing hearts. The second we met him, he completely melted into our arms like butter and basically decided every human was his new best friend. He’s not the chaotic, bouncing-off-the-walls type of puppy either, he’s sweet in the most gentle, intentional way. He’ll calmly walk over, sit beside you, lean against your leg, and quietly ask for love like a tiny fuzzy gentleman. Then the second you start petting him? PLOP. During his kid test with a four- and seven-year-old, Cheerio was incredibly tolerant, affectionate, and gentle. He happily accepted all the attention, climbed right into their laps for cuddles, and acted like he had known them forever. He absolutely adores people and truly seems happiest when he’s close to his humans. When it comes to dogs, Cheerio is the life of the puppy party. He had super easy, quick leash-drop introductions with every dog we brought out and immediately wanted to run, chase, and play. He shared toys well, shared attention from handlers well, and showed really lovely social skills overall. He’s confident and playful without being pushy, and he reads other dogs nicely too. At one point, another dog got a little too rough during play and started overwhelming him. Cheerio gave a very appropriate quick correction to say “okay dude, too much,” then calmly removed himself and came to sit by our feet. A few minutes later, he was completely relaxed again and back to having fun. Honestly, it was such a nice example of healthy puppy communication. He currently lives with both a small dog and a large dog and has done great with both. He would probably love a playful canine buddy who enjoys running around and then crashing together afterward for naps. Cheerio also did really well out and about. He walked nicely on leash with very little pulling, stayed non-reactive during outings, and handled noise, activity, and new environments like a champ. Everywhere he went, he just soaked up attention from people and happily enjoyed the adventure. As for cats: Cheerio was curious and interested during his cat test. He sniffed, licked, and followed the cat briefly at times, but he was also able to disengage and walk away. We did see moments where he looked like he might want to chase if a cat ran, so we think he would need further kitty testing before going to a home with cats to make sure it’s the right fit for everyone. At this time, we would recommend slow introductions and dog-savvy cats only. Cheerio is truly the best of both worlds, playful and fun when it’s time to zoom around the yard, then immediately ready to curl up against you like a weighted blanket with ears. He’s medium energy overall and still very much a puppy, so continued enrichment and puppy guidance will be important for him. But goodness… this puppy is special. He’s cuddly, goofy, social, affectionate, emotionally intelligent, and ridiculously charming all wrapped into one compact little body. Spotlight on Mia Mia was rescued in California after she and her sister were left behind at a groomer. She’s a 5-year-old female Dorgi, a Corgi-Dachshund mix. Mia is spayed, up to date on her vaccinations, and in good health. She is smart, protective, loving, and independent. She may take a few days to warm up to new people, but treats help her feel more comfortable. Once she trusts you, Mia enjoys belly rubs, playing with her toys, chewing on her split elk antler, and running around the yard. She has a wonderful personality and is very loyal to her favorite person. Mia is content to relax and chew on her antler while you work, so she doesn’t need constant attention. When she’s ready for affection, she’ll happily put her antler aside to spend time with you. What Mia Needs: Mia is looking for a home where she can be the only pet, without children or small animals. She loves attention and needs someone who can give her lots of love and care. A fenced yard is important for her potty breaks and walks. It’s also important to keep her on a healthy diet to help her stay well. We’ll provide you with all the guidance you need to care for her. The ideal adopter for Mia is someone experienced with protective or independent dogs or who is willing to learn and follow guidance. Patience is important, as Mia may take time to adjust. A calm, adult-only home is best, and someone home regularly to keep her company would be a great fit. Most of all, Mia needs someone who will love her forever and never leave her behind again. Mia is very protective and needs to be introduced to new people in the right way, since she wants to keep her person and her home safe. She was found in Fresno, California, running with her daughter and two sons among other stray dogs that had been abandoned. Libby would be a great companion for a retired woman. She feels most comfortable with women and is a bit shy around men, but can warm up to dog-friendly men over time. Her ideal adopter is a woman or someone experienced with cautious rescue dogs. Libby prefers homes without children and does best in a calm, adult-only environment. At first, she may be cautious and not want to be picked up. As she learns to trust, she will come closer, give gentle kisses, and want to be near you, even joining you on the couch. Once she fully trusts you, she will let you pick her up. Libby enjoys relaxing at home, but with a little encouragement, she will happily go for walks on a harness and explore with you. She loves to cuddle and is very affectionate. Once she bonds with you, she will be a loyal companion. Libby can be an only dog as long as she has her person nearby and is not left alone for long periods. She gets along well with other friendly, small-breed dogs. Libby is usually cautious around bigger dogs and may feel nervous if they are too playful or energetic, so she would do best in a home without large dogs or with calm, gentle ones. **Lexxi, a Dachshund-Corgi Mix female** Lexxi is a beautiful 15-pound, 1.5-year-old Dachshund-Corgi mix. She was found with her mom and brothers after being abandoned and running with other stray dogs in Fresno, California. The dogs were rounded up by Animal Control and sent to the Fresno shelter. Sadly, due to overcrowding, Lexxi and her family were going to be euthanized. SDAF pulled them from the shelter so they could find a forever family. Lexxi is very close to her mom, Libby. We hope they can be adopted together, but Lexxi can also bond with another friendly dog in the home. Adopters should have experience with dogs and rescues, as both Lexxi and Libby are somewhat afraid of men. If there is a man in the home, he will need to help with feeding and care to build their trust, since they usually trust women first. Some ways men can help build trust include offering treats by hand, participating in regular feeding routines, spending quiet time nearby, and engaging in gentle play sessions to encourage positive interactions. Being patient and using a calm, gentle voice will help Lexxi and Libby feel more comfortable and secure. According to their foster,    Lexxi (the black-and-tricolor one) is the quieter of the two and loves relaxing on the couch. Now that she is out of the noisy shelter, she is starting to come out of her shell. With a gentle, steady home, she will continue to gain confidence. Lexxi and Libby are very close, easygoing, and impressively quiet. They would not make good guard dogs, but they are wonderful companions. Lexxi is spayed and up to date on her vaccines. She has learned to walk on a leash, but because there are large predators like bears and cougars at the rescue, we do not walk the dogs here. As a result, adopters should expect Lexxi to need extra patience and positive reinforcement as she gets used to regular walks and to wearing a harness again. It is normal for her to be hesitant at first. Starting with short indoor sessions or in a secure, quiet area, using treats and gentle encouragement, will help her regain confidence on leash. With understanding and a gradual approach, she can become comfortable and enjoy walks with her new family. Lexxi is still young and can become a wonderful family member with some patience and training. Their foster had started harness and leash training, but they will need more practice. Because of their anxiety and past trauma, we recommend a home without children. They need a calm, adult household. If you have the time, love, and experience to help Lexxi or both of these two sweet girls heal and become part of your family, we would love to talk with you. We also offer a foster-to-adopt period, so you will have plenty of time to get to know Lexxi and help her adjust. During this time, our team will provide ongoing support and guidance as you welcome Lexxi into your home.
