Nikki is a mature gal who knows what she wants - two meals a day, plenty of water, and several treats, naps, and short walks every day. She is happy to have some affection, but will walk away when she has had enough, and is content to lay around in dog beds, blankets, or the floor. (Because of her short legs, she can't jump up on the furniture.) Since being diagnosed with Cushings Disease, she is now on the proper medication, and along with weight management food and regular exercise, she has lost a few pounds and is getting peppier by the day! Cushing's does require ongoing care and medication. We'll happily discuss it with you and we're also waiving her adoption fee.Nikki has been aggressive towards other dogs over food in a previous foster home, so it is recommended that she be the only animal in the home. She is reactive to cats and large dogs but has made friends with other small dogs in her current foster neighborhood. She is very friendly towards most people and has done well at the public events hosted by the shelter. She has done fine with older/mature kids who know how to approach a dog, let her sniff them out, and give her space. She was not a fan of smaller/energetic children approaching and petting without letting her sniff them out first, and tried to walk away from them.Nikki doesn't seem to know any commands, but is a very well-mannered and friendly dog. She will stay still to have her collar put on and walks well on leash. She is a relatively quiet dog, but will bark when something startles her, like a loud noise or an approaching stranger or dog. She is housetrained and will walk to the door, bark, or nudge you if she needs to go out. She will gladly go into the crate for a treat and stay content for several hours. She does not play with toys and doesn't need much attention or grooming. She has short hair and does not shed much at all. She enjoys being brushed and having back scratches or rolling in the grass. Once she trusts you, she enjoys belly rubs too. She has also done well getting baths in her foster homes.
