Story
Meet Calvin, a 3 year-old standard chocolate longhair piebald that stood in line twice to get ALL the looks! And while Calvin got ALL the good looks, unfortunately he's got plenty of needs too! Before you fall head-over-heels in love with his hazel eyes and curly brown locks of fur…please read on! Calvin is what we call “HIGH MAINTENANCE” in a dog — he has severe allergies that we simply have not been able to completely curb — and his adopter will need to be prepared to continue the battle to keep Calvin’s allergies under control.  The great news is that thru multiple tests and trial and error we can provide the very long and hopefully complete list of all items that are a no-go for Calvin's wellbeing and his people's peace of mind.Calvin’s minimum monthly budget : Apoquel $60-$80 for 2 month supply, Allermyl Shampoo for his weekly medicated baths $31.21 for 4-month supply, Benadryl for when his allergies get intense $10, Calvin’s weekly food budget for his raw diet and goat milk $50…and don't forget his heartworm and flea and tick meds. BUT, the amount of love Calvin gives you back in return? PRICELESS! Calvin was surrendered by an owner that loved him deeply but unfortunately her life took an unexpected shift when she no longer had someone to look after Calvin when she traveled for work as a flight attendant. We can tell you that we rarely see the level of premium care that Calvin had in his prior home — he has been very loved. What Calvin costs his people in the pocketbook, he more than makes up for in the love department. This boy is the definition of a lover boy and you cannot help but just adore his cute curly standard dachshund coat and positive attitude. Calvin does sometimes require muzzling and wearing a cone at the times when his allergies are at peak (like spring) and sometimes to avoid eating things along the way when he goes on walks. Thankfully he does tolerate both pretty well and doesn’t fuss too much when they are required fashion accessories. Speaking of walks — Calvin might walk at a decent pace for about 30 minutes, but he will likely never be a runner or a hiker. He prefers sofa surfing to sidewalk surfing — or long naps on a blanket (no down or feathers, please) in the backyard. His form of exercise is batting his gorgeous eyes at you and trying to get you to give him a belly rub. Calvin does well on car rides, enjoys bar life, and is happy to join you wherever you go in life so long as he can be with you! Calvin gets along okay with other dogs as he is in a foster home with 2 fur siblings — but he is also used to soaking up all the attention and would gladly do that too (and let’s be honest — you might only be able to afford one dog if you adopt Calvin)! Calvin will be a friend that comes with benefits -- in that he is completely housetrained and crate trained (I mean honestly, is he even a dachshund?)...and leash trained too (though we are hoping you read above that the only time he really gets excited for a leash is to go hang out at his favorite bars around town!So if you find that you are an interested adopter with an extra $300 monthly available for his upkeep -- then we know that Calvin is the guy for you! Calvin’s needs really require an adopter that is home more than they are not (bonus points to adopters that work from home or can take Calvin to work with them-- he is currently a well-behaved office dog ). a close eye to keep him from self-harm, and a home that would be invested in continuing the battle of trying to wean Calvin off as much medicine as possible in hopes that one day we can get this sweet boy to the point of never having to use the muzzle and cone to prevent hot spots.  Further bonus points if you love bathing and trimming dogs. Calvin NEEDS and ENJOYS his home baths once a week and fairly regular trims and is wonderfully patient thru both.  Calvin’s adopters need to be within a 3 hour drive of Central NC. He comes with an entire medical history from several specialty vets to help get him started where he lands. ##2041256##

Maggie (dapple 14 years old) & Layla (red 16 years old)Both weighs around 10 poundsFostered in Raleigh areaBONDED – Only adopted togetherShort version: Good with dogs, cats, kids over 12, pee pad trained (mostly), low key, needs quiet home, apartment friendlyWe are going to use a word that we’ve never used on our page to describe any dachshund ever – low maintenance. And it’s very possible this will be the one and only time we ever utter that phrase here at DBP.But Maggie and Layla are just that – easy and low key. They love each other and they love their bed. Their favorite thing in the whole world is to snuggle together butt to butt. And they will do that all day long. No barking at ghosts, no getting in your personal space, or following you to the bathroom. They enjoy pets and attention, especially Layla, who has the cutest tail wag in the world and is super sweet. Maggie is a bit timid and watches over Layla, but once she trusts you then she warms up and is your friend. They are pee pad trained, but the new family should be OK with accidents in the transition. Layla will go outside but Maggie is a pee pad girl for life. Because of their age and disposition, we are looking for quiet home. They are totally fine with dogs and cats – Maggie will explain her boundaries if needed. Because Maggie can be a touch grumpy at first, they need a home without kids under 12. They are very quiet so would be fine for an apartment. And would be totally content with a working family as well.Maggie and Layla relatively healthy for super seniors. They are both UTD on shots, hw negative, had senior bloodwork (no major issues), spayed and had an extensive dental. Maggie has a heart murmur (3 out of 6) to monitor and both take joint supplements for artritis.Their new families will need to travel to the Raleigh area to adopt – no transports. We prefer families within 4 hours of central NC, which includes, NC, VA, SC and DC area, northern GA, eastern TN, WV and southern MD. Because of their age, these girls adoption fee is a donation of the new owner’s choosing. To get started bringing these sweet ladies home, fill out an application at www.doxiebyproxy.org/orgCheck out the videos of these gals in the comments! It takes a special person to adopt a super senior. And an even more amazing home to adopt TWO. But the love and joy you will get from opening to your heart and home to these ladies is priceless. These girls are sweet, easy and need a spot spot to enjoy their golden years snuggling with each other. ##2089220##

Story
Hamilton 12 pounds 2 years old Chiweenie Fostered in Raleigh area Short version: Sweet, great snuggler, needs someone home more than not due to separation anxiety, no apartments, great with kids over 7, good with dogs, but could also be an only dog, started on slow kill heartworm treatment , crate trained. Hamilton earned many nicknames including Hammy, Hampsterdam, Hamuel Adams, Hampster in foster care. But this handsome guy doesn’t care what you call him as long as he gets to be near his people as much as possible. This guy landed in the shelter when his owner brought him in saying that they found him as a stray. But lo and behold, when the shelter scanned his microchip, they learned that the so called Good Samaritan was actually his registered owner on the chip. But we told him on his freedom ride that we would find a family who would love and cherish him forever and ever. Hamilton is a sweet and affectionate lap dog who adores burrowing under blankets for cozy naps. He enjoys being where his people are, especially using his people as a human mattress. This dude is the world's best snuggler. He happily sleeps in bed with his family and has requested a home with a Hamilton size spot in the big bed. He's already mastered potty training and walks well on a leash. Hamilton can be vocal inside the home and may bark at people he encounters during walks, but he responds well to verbal corrections and quickly warms up to friendly faces. He would do great with an active family that likes to walk to get out his puppy like energy. Because right now car rides have been associated with big changes, he’s not a huge fan of car rides and will whine. Hamilton has been great with his 7-year-old human sister but will set gentle boundaries with her, displaying patience and tolerance in her presence. He interacts with her calmly and affectionately, enjoying her company without showing any signs of aggression. Hamilton is known for his respectful demeanor towards his bossy canine foster sister, showing his gentle and tolerant personality. He gets along great with other dogs, but would also be OK as an only dog. Because Hamilton loves so deeply, he will bark when his people leave. While in foster care, we’ve seen this get better and he now settles in a few minutes. But Hamilton is best suited for a single-family home environment. Hamilton is UTD on shots, neutered, and microchipped. He is heartworm positive and started on slow kill treatment. Doxie By Proxy will pay for slow kill treatment until he tests negative – likely in about a year. His new family will need to drive to the Raleigh area to adopt him – no transports. We prefer families in NC, VA, SC, eastern TN, northern GA, or DC area. To get the process started of bringing this sweet dude home, fill out an application at www.doxiebyproxy.org/application ##2096882##

Story
Gottfried is handsome loaf of senior looking for his forever home. After being abandoned by his ailing older owner at a vet’s office, he joined our Rescue and hearts for the last 4 months.  He has loved having his fellow wiener dog pack (he has enjoyed three foster siblings), but most importantly loves to be with his human person. He is always down for an outing or adventure, but would also love to lay around and enjoy a show on Netflix. He loves to sun on the\\\\ patio, and we will frequently find him belly up just catching a tan. We think he would do really well in a work from home environment, retired home, and/or with a pack to keep him company while his person is away. He is great on a leash, and has gotten even better the past few months while on his weight loss journey. Gottfried has successfully been kennel trained while away, but prefers being kenneled near his furry friends.  Longterm kenneling is not going to work for Gottfried.   Oh.. Did I mention he is potty trained?! Over the past 4 months, he has not had one accident inside. With all of those amazing features, it’s easy to say… what’s the catch? At no fault of his own, we highly suspect Gottfried has suffered some abuse in his past that contributes to some of his triggers. We are confident however that our insight will allow for a seamless transition into his forever home!  Gottfried does not like to be redirected or blocked by feet. Being a small dog, and so close to the ground, it’s very easy to throw a foot out to stop him from going out the door, or eating the piece of food you dropped on the floor.  But this action is certainly a trigger. We have seen a great deal of improvement in this over the last 4 months, and feel confident he will continue to do so with awareness in his forever home. But his new home will need to understand these reactions do not sit well with him & could cause him to impressively react.  Gottfried can also get very possessive over plushy toys. Again, we have seen improvement in this category, but he will get fixated on a plushy today and protect it like his life depends on it. He is also at risk of eating the plush, which is not a good combination. We have been working on redirection, but his forever family will need to always be aware of this tendency. His forever home has two choices - provide safe chew toys & elect to not overly engage with Gottfried if he is focused or do not provide toys.  As he settles in, you will likely learn ques & techniques. Gottfried also does not prefer any kind negative interaction, and hates being told “No”. We have described his perfect parenting style as “gentle parenting”. Lots of words of encouragement will build his confidence, reduce his fear and increase his trust. We have seen so much progress in the past 4 months, and again know he will continue!  The positive - Gottfriend loves a treat & is very food motivated.  This can help in redirecting him, gettingh is attention & offering him something that may be a higher value that something else he is focused on.  Use it to your advantage! Although he seems to love and behave great around every child he meets, we do not think his forever home will have children under the age of 12 due to some of these tendencies.  Gottfried was overweight when he arrived to us & his foster parents have worked hard to bring his weight down, so his new home should expect to keep up his premium diet.  Additionally, gottfriend has also suffered from skin issues his entire life. We seem to have found a good combination of the right food, supplements, and shampoo, but further upkeep will be needed. Gottfriend is fully vetted, up to date on vaccines and had a recent dental for the freshest breath for plenty of kisses, and boy does he love to show just how much he cares!   Gottfried is fostered in the Charlotte area & any prospective family will need to travel to the area.  His adoption fee is $200. Gottfried has been an incredible addition to a household and we are confident someone will be able to share the same amount of love with him as he does everyday with his person. ##2122783##

Story
Doc & Marten are an infectious brother duo that will light up your home. Their foster mom describes them as So lovable, Inquisitive and playful.  We think these dudes may be a year & a half old. These boys will play fetch & even retrieve well.  With more practice & continued reinforcement of commands, these boys are eager to learn. Marten knows the sit command but Doc is still working to perfect that skill. However, Doc is better with ball fetch so they just even out in skills department! Doc & Marten are good with small dogs.  We have not seen them in environments with bigger dogs, but with proper introductions & patience, we suspect they would adapt.  As for children - that is another environment we have not tested.  We are quite optimistic kids over the age of 5 would work fine.  Their foster mom regards them as adaptable so we suspect when handled appropriately, most scenarios can work.  As for everyone's first question - potty .. it's a work in progress.  Marten will alert when it's time but Doc has proven to be slower to notify you.  There will for sure be mishaps.  A good schedule & routine will continue to improve the bathroom department. They share everything, from their food to their water to their toys and their bed space.  It's a forever playmate.  Their foster mom has not kenneled them but says they do well contained in a space with a gate.  They may need reinforcement in leash walking.  They arrived to us under the weather so between recovery & this sweltering Carolina heat, walks have not been the priority.  Likely, the two together need practice to be good citizens on a leash but it's doable.  We'd love them to have a fenced yard.  We are open to discussing the right home without one, but please know these guys are young, energetic & need time to play.  And don't forget - there are two of them!  Without a yard, their new family will have to commit to serious daily activity.  Doc & Marten are fully vetted, neutered & vaccinated.  They are fostered in Greensboro so prospective adopters will need to travel there.  Their adoption fee is $350. ##2110656##
