Story
These cats are not well-suited as indoor only pets and can help families looking for natural rodent and pest control on their property. Because they are independent, they do best as indoor/outdoor cats. These cats typically enjoy free access to the outdoors, where they can come and go at will. Territorial by nature, they’ll rarely venture far from their home. They understand the safety of shelter and predictability of a food source in the shed, barn or garage where they are housed and fed. Barn cats do best in groups. Like all cats, outdoor cats require: – Shelter from predators and the elements – Clean, fresh water – Healthy, regular diet – Veterinary care when needed As an adopter, you should understand that these cats are unlikely to become social, affectionate lap cats. They will most likely remain shy and skittish around people but may warm up to those who take care of them, particularly those who feed them. Our outdoor cats are: – Spayed/Neutered – Up to date on vaccines – Have tested negative for FeLV/FIV

Story
Ralph appeared on our doorstep as a 7-week-old kitten in August 2019 so he is now 6 and 1/2 years old. I moved from our three-story house to an apartment in December 2020, and then into a smaller apartment in January 23. Now I am moving across the country into an even smaller place and cannot take him with me. He is a friendly cat, and will go up to new people to say hello. He has had a good relationship with a chihuahua but has not been living with a dog recently or with another cat. I think he would thrive with more space and more activity around him than I have been able to give him for the last several years. He can be grumpy, and the vet has prescribed kitty Prozac to smooth him out. I wonder whether that would be necessary in a larger space with more than one person. He is a great companion and I will miss him terribly.

Story
All interested people should submit an adoption application as their first step. MEET POPPY- The Tiny Tuxedo With Big Grumpy- Cat energy Poppy may look like she just finished a 5-day bender, but that's only because she survived a rough life on the streets. Animal control found her struggling outside and brought her to safety, where she was transferred into our care. Since then, her foster has been nursing her back to health- and she's already gained 1.5 lbs. With good food, supplements, and lots of TLC, her coat is improving and so is her confidence! If you're a fan of the internet- famous Grumpy cat... look no further, Poppy is Grumpy cat 2.0. Despite her permanently displeased expression, she's actually gentle, sweet, and totally fine with being picked up. She eve has a flare for drama- sometimes she will give a gentle growl if she sees an animal nearby but doesn't move an inch. The moment a feater toy or wand comes out, her inner kitten bursts through and the grumpy look disappears! Poppy has adjusted beautifully to indoor life and loves being warm, safe, and cozy. Although she wasn't a fan of cats and dogs at first, she now tolerates them. She would absolutely thrive in a home that is quieter and calm with either no other petss or one friendly, easygoing cat. If you want a cat with charm and an adorable grumpy face paired with a secretly soft heart, POPPY is your girl!  All pets adopted from GDHS are spayed or neutered, have vaccinations brought up to date, are on heartworm preventative (dogs), FIV/FELV tested (cats) and microchipped. The Greater Derry Humane Society does not have a physical shelter, and all visits are by appointment only. December 14, 2025, 10:08 am
