Story
Our sweet Gomer was picked up by a local animal control the day before Christmas Eve 2024.  He was very thin but happy to see everyone.  Every time someone walked by his kennel he ran to the front hoping that someone was coming for him.  He had intestinal parasites, wasn’t neutered, had several masses, had terrible teeth, and was heart worm positive.  Most of his issues have been treated.  He has finished his heart worm treatment and will have his dental in February 2026.  At first he didn’t respond to us when we took him out after pulling him from the shelter.  It didn’t take him long to realize that living inside with folks who loved him was a dream come true.  He likes to lay around with his buddy Gus and wander and sniff in the yard.  We’ve discovered that he is an escape artist if he sees something that interests him.  He can open latches on gates and climb a chain link fence.  He will need a 6 ft privacy fence and a family who will be very diligent about watching over him.  He is a fireplace dog who loves to chill with his other foster sibs and is learning basic cues.   We don’t know how he is with cats.   He would love a home with people who will love him for the rest of his life, taking him on sniffy walks and include him in family adventures.  If you are that special family who would love this boy forever, please contact Rainbow Rescue at 757-472-1583 or rainbowanimalrescueva@gmail.comJanuary 1, 2026, 1:52 pm

She was trapped by animal control and gave birth to 5 boys 4 days after. This was all traumatic to her and very stressful. She was a great mom and now deserves someone special like herself. She is walking much better on a leash now and not flinching as much with touch. She will require an experienced handler only because shes so nervous. She has zero aggression. Wilda does open up around other dogs. She enjoys being a follower and when she trusts you, its a great feeling. A dog like wilda will bond so strongly to her person and make you feel like your the only person on this planet.

When they were shut down due to violations I went to pull some dogs for another organization and saw this pretty face waiting to be saved with a time stamp over her head....of course she came with! Howlena was certainly a hunting dog prior and enjoys scents and has the urge to track scents. She would do best in a home that can take her for adventures, nose work so she can feel satisfied with "hunting", and a comfy bed to finish off her days. She is the QUEEN of zoomies, very fast and its so fun to watch her have fun. She has her "go" but also her "whoa" where she is ready to snuggle ON you on the coach. She is not vocal and very loyal, loving, and sweet

NEEDS EXPERIENCED ADOPTER DUE TO BEING TIMID Name: Ukulele Age: approx 6 years Weight: 55 Color: red/white Breed: Walker hound Vaccines: up to date Altered: yes Heartworm Status: negative Energy Level: average House trained: Yes Crate trained: yes Dog friendly: yes/must be adopted to a home with atleast 1 dog Cat friendly: yes Kid friendly: yes but very scared Temperament: very fearful, goofy, playful whe he warms up Adoption fee: 275 Notes: We pulled Ukulele from our local shelter as he was struggling in the shelter environment. He is EXTREMELY fearful/flighty. Extremely athletic and has scaled walls at the shelter easily. He will require a very patient person with a quiet home and multiple friendly dogs to get his confidence boosted. Once settled he will pick his person and can be "normal" he does have the ability to bond and trust. He does silly things like take random items into his crate and "hoard" them. He does not destroy the items just takes them in his crate to collect. He has a great personality! Story
Jasper had a really rough start to life. He was surrendered to us after owner was crating him for 23 hours a day...they spoke so terribly of him and all the behaviors they said he had, we're definitely a direct result in how he was being treated as he has not shown any bad or undesirable behaviors. Jasper is very smart and listens to several commands the first time they are said "go lay down, sit, stay" all he wants to do is please his human and be loved. TOTAL cuddle bug. Story
We could see Parker’s ribs. All of them.Clearly.Despite getting three big meals a day, plus treats, Parker was losing weight. He spent his days at the shelter running in frantic circles, then pacing when he was too tired to run.At night, he barked at every sound, every shadow, as if the world itself was closing in.So we tried an experiment: a kind volunteer offered to foster Parker. And just like that, the story changed. In a quiet home with routine and calm, Parker exhaled. His ribs disappeared beneath healthy weight. His pacing slowed to a steady trot at your side. His bark softened from panic to commentary -- a running narration of life as your devoted shadow.Parker is three years old, housetrained, crate trained, and so smart you’ll catch him studying you like he’s preparing for an exam. He’s polite, sensitive, and deeply loyal -- the kind of dog who wants to get it right for you, every time. What Parker has taught us is this: he isn’t built for chaos. He doesn’t thrive in busy households, and he’s not comfortable living with other pets or children. Leashed walks and unfamiliar environments increase his anxiety -- Parker is a homebody who feels safest when the world is small, predictable, and kind. He doesn’t need adventures. He needs consistency, patience, and a person who understands that love doesn’t always look loud.If you’re looking for a steady presence rather than a whirlwind, a loyal shadow rather than a social butterfly, Parker may be exactly who you’ve been waiting for.***PARKER IS IN FOSTER. PLEASE SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT TO MEET HIM.Email contact@animalaidsociety.org, or call 757-865-0511Interested? Come for a visit any day of the week - 365 days a year between 9am - 12pm. Story
Meet Coda!!Coda is a charming, long-eared `teenager` looking for a family to join his pack. At seven months old, he has already been neutered and is entering the fun, slightly stubborn adolescent phase where his personality is truly starting to shine.Personality & TemperamentThe Social Butterfly: Like most Bassets, Coda is a social creature who thrives on companionship. He is naturally affectionate with his family and typically gets along well with other dogs and children.Nose First, Questions Later: Coda is a scent hound through and through. Once he catches an interesting trail, he might get `selective hearing,` so a secure, fenced yard is a must for his safety.A `Mellow` Athlete: While he loves a good snooze on the couch, Coda still needs about 30–60 minutes of moderate daily exercise—like a long, sniff-heavy walk—to keep his weight in check and protect his developing joints.Vocal & Expressive: Expect a few soulful howls or bays! Coda uses his voice to communicate when he`s excited or feeling a bit lonely.Training & Care NeedsAdolescent Antics: At seven months, he may occasionally test boundaries or `forget` commands he once knew. Patience, consistency, and plenty of high-value treats are the keys to his heart and his cooperation.Joint Safety: Because he is still growing, it is important to limit Coda`s use of stairs and prevent him from jumping off high furniture until he is about 18 months old to protect his long back.Grooming: His short tricolor coat is low-maintenance, but his signature long ears need weekly cleaning to stay healthy and infection-free.Ideal HomeCoda would do best in a home where:Someone is around for much of the day, as Bassets can struggle with separation anxiety. There is a secure outdoor area for supervised sniffing. His family understands the `hound way` of thinking—patient, goofy, and always ready for a cuddle.
