So often, we get them when they are at least two years old and you can't help but wonder, what did this amazing hound look like when they were a tiny, little thing.We have your answer! Look no further than our two amazing walker hound puppies - Watermelon and Pineapple!At 9-weeks-old, these two have already charmed most every volunteer and everyone at the vet's office. Adorable doesn't even begin to describe them. They are two of the most fun-loving puppies we have ever had at the shelter.Watermelon (girl) and Pineapple (boy) are transfers to us from a rescuer in the middle part of the state. They were with their mom and one other sibling until just a week ago. They are pros at using their pee pads, which delights us all.But the coolest part about them is how they are helping another puppy we have become braver and more content. Reef is 21 weeks old and, with his sisters, was found as a stray. The group of them were doing their best to survive, just relying on each other.Reef's sisters have been adopted and he has been by himself. He was the most shy of the four and the hardest for visitors to get to know. But now, that is all changing. Reef has been drawn completely out of his shell by Watermelon and Pineapple. They won't leave him alone.You find yourself laughing the entire time you are watching them play - one will be walking along, only to be dive-bombed by another. At one point, one of them was riding Reef. They love tug-of-war and will then all take a break under the bed outside. And with each day, Reef gets braver.Watermelon and Pineapple, along with their new BFF Reef, are joy wrapped up in puppy bodies. They remind us all that stopping and watching puppies can bring on a peace you never realized you needed. Meet Walker! He came into the 4 PAWS family in May 2020; emaciated, heartworm positive and had several wounds. Walker has made a complete transformation! He is a sweet 7-year-old, 74lb silly boy who is good with kids and other dogs but hasn’t been cat tested. Walker was treated for heartworm and has tested negative. This breed mix can be high energy and very smart which means he will require exercise (mentally and physically). He will also need a 6ft fence with plenty of area to run. His new family needs to be committed to daily exercise, continued training, and socialization. Meet Pony!! This sweet girl did not have the best start in life, but after spending some time experiencing a taste of the life she deserves, she is now ready to find her perfect home. She has been in a foster home the past few weeks and her foster mom says she has been a wonderful houseguest. She loved playing with her canine foster siblings in the home and exploring the backyard every chance she got. Pony can be a little shy at first, but after some gentle pets and showing her some lovin`, she will melt right into you. She will more than likely need multiple visits due to this shyness. She`s still getting out of her shell and just making sure she`s safe. Pony is doing great with the potty training. She loves her crate and considers it her safe space, so having a crate set up for her in her new home where she can go and relax when needed is a must for success. She would love a home with another canine to show her the ropes, help build her confidence and to play - she has some energy when she wakes up from her naps! Pony can be a little protective of her food if another canine is nearby, so please feed her separately from any other canines in the home. Pony is unfortunately heartworm positive and will need to undergo treatment at our clinic after going home; luckily though, our friends at PETA have covered the treatment costs! If you have any questions about this sweet girl, please ask our kennel staff and they will be happy to help!

Now Chonk is the last one waiting, and honestly, we can't figure out why.Maybe people see the extra pounds before they see the extra love.We're not worried.Some dogs find homes.Dogs like Chonk find their people -- the ones who understand that a little extra padding just means there's more Beagle to love. Pippy arrived at Animal Aid Society with a tiny stuffed toy.The next morning, when I brought her breakfast, she greeted me proudly carrying it in her mouth, then walked beside me all the way to her apartment while I put down her food. Pippy is a Beagle, which means she considers breakfast less of a meal than a sacred event, and at a chonky 21 pounds she's carrying a little more Beagle than nature originally intended. She wanted that breakfast very badly.But, she also wanted to keep hold of her baby.She actually tried to eat without putting the stuffed toy down.I don't know what happened to Pippy before she came to us, and I don't need to. Watching a little dog try to solve the engineering problem of eating breakfast while hanging onto the only thing that made her feel secure told me enough.Pippy is about six years old and may be the sweetest, gentlest dog I've ever met. When you reach down to pet her, she instinctively crouches, as though she's trying to decide whether this hand is going to hurt her or be kind. When the hand lands softly, her whole body relaxes, her tail starts wagging, and her expression changes completely. It's impossible to watch without wondering how many times kindness lost that contest before it finally started winning.The shelter volunteers, being highly trained for these situations, responded exactly as you'd expect.We started bringing her more babies.Pippy now has an impressive collection of little stuffed toys. She carefully carries them around, proudly shows them to anyone willing to admire them, keeps them together, and treats them with astonishing tenderness. Somewhere along the way, something else changed, too. She now gently sets her baby down before she eats because she's beginning to believe it will still be there when she's finished.That may not sound like much, but around here we know better. Trust doesn't arrive all at once. Sometimes it shows up disguised as a little Beagle deciding it's safe to let go of a stuffed toy for five minutes.Pippy would love to meet you and show you her stuffies at Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA.
