Story
Looking for an excellent family dog and companion, but also a great potential protection dog or competition dog? Look no further than Mia, our 2-year-old German Shepherd/Malanois mix. This breed makes a loyal and devoted companion. They tend to be a little more level headed like the German Shepherd and are not as overly active as the Malinois and they are easier to live with as a house pet. Mia came to us when her owner decided he was too busy to devote to her the time she deserved. She has completed her basic command and manner training in Camp K-9 at the Kentucky State Reformatory. Her inmate handler describes her as having medium energy. She enjoys walks, playtime with dogs and humans, and playing with her own toys. She is house trained and crate trained. She does alert at strangers sometimes. Mia has a clean bill of health and is up to date on vaccines and is on flea/tick and heart worm prevention. She is microchipped. Mia would do best in a home where her owner has experience with dogs of her breed or large dog experience.

Story
QUINCY is a one year old male shepherd/chow mix that weighs 60 lbs. He was picked up with 2 other dogs running along the interstate. The other two were claimed but apparently Quincy had strayed too far from home? He is an active young adult that gets along very well with other dogs. He is crate, leash and house trained. He has also been started on some basic obedience. HIs current energy level is still "puppy" enough he'll need an active home environment and a fenced in yard. He'll do best with a family that has dog experience. He's very smart and eager to please but commands attention. (it's a shepherd thing!) An owner who will continue his obedience training would be ideal. If interested in adopting, our process begins with submission of our application. Please visit our website at www.adoptmebluegrasspetrescue.com and click on Quincy's picture in "Adoptable Dogs". Additional adoption FAQ's can be found here also. Meets will be set with approved applicants based on our "best family fit" approach. Thank you!

She is a smart, athletic, bundle of energy. She has mastered her obedience training in our Paws Behind Bars Training Program and is ready for the perfect fit home. LuLu would do best in a home who has working breed experience. If LuLu isn't "working she is looking for puppy mischief. Lulu has high prey drive, therefore, requires a home without young children, cats, or small dogs. She would do best with a young active male dog. LuLu requires a FULLY fenced yard. LuLu needs a home with someone who is able and willing to maintain her training and support her need for a "job. Story
NICO is a 7 year old male, Malinois mix. He is impeccably obedience trained by the inmates of our Paws Behind Bars prison dog training program. He adopted out by us when he was one and through no fault of his own, he came back last year. He has a nice moderate energy level and he's very loyal to "his person". He requires an owner with dog experience and someone willing to build that mutual respect. Due to his breed, Nico appreciates a task that's his. In the prison, he helps his inmate raise puppies. He looks like a tough guy, but he's got a big, soft spot for the littles. Nico will do best in an adult home with a fenced yard. HIs ADOPTION FEES ARE WAIVED! If interested in adopting, our process begins with submission of our application. Please visit our website at www.adoptmebluegrasspetrescue.com and click on NICO's picture in "Adoptable Dogs". Story
MISTY is a 2 year old, female german shepherd that weighs 65 lbs. She is smart, affectinate, and active. She spent quite a bit of time in our Paws Behind Bars prison dog training program. Her inmate had to give her plenty of time to settle and relax as she'd been in a small, county shelter for quite a while and was a bundle of nerves. Once settled in, her obedience training began. She excelled and the more her inmate had to teach her, the more she wanted to learn. She is a german shepherd and as such, is very task driven. Her favorite "task" was to run the perimeters of the yard fence at the prison. She was always on alert. Inside, she's a cuddle bunny. Misty needs to be the only pet in the home. Her adoption fee is WAIVED! If interested in adopting, our process begins with submission of our application. Please visit our website at www.adoptmebluegrasspetrescue.com and click on Misty's picture in "Adoptable Dogs". Additional adoption FAQ's can be found here also. Story
Macy is an adorable young girl just over 2 years of age who is believed to be a Shepherd Cattle dog mix. Macy came from a rural part of Kentucky where she was live-trapped after being born to a pack of Shepherds that were free-roaming on a farm. Macy had zero human contact prior to being trapped and has been very slow to warm up. She is considered semi-feral at this point and is still overcoming her fears.   Macy prefers to avoid all human contact but has begrudgingly learned how to walk on a leash and tolerate being handled for daily living. Macy is a fear biter and if cornered - such as when she is in her crate and needs to come out - she will lash out in fear. If you move slowly with Macy she settles down and will allow you to handle her but she gets overwhelmed easily when rushed. Macy is going to require extensive ongoing handling, training, and socialization coupled with lots of patience as she continues to grow and bond. Macy has made great progress in her foster home and can be handled by all occupants while she is both on leash and off leash. She enjoys going on hikes around their property - she is still learning to not hate the car which would allow for hiking in new places - and romping in the creek near their yard. Macy does not do well with children which she views as small cattle to be herded - she will nip the back of their legs if left loose with children and will bark at them from her crate. She has been slowly learning to interact while on leash with an 8 year old that visits her foster frequently but would not be recommended for a home with children under 13 years of age. Macy is crate trained and relies on her crate to provide her a safe space to be when she overwhelmed or cannot be supervised. Macy does okay in the house while supervised but does like to chew - she has an expensive taste for cell phones and shoes - and cannot be left loose unattended.    Macy connects with other dogs much better than she does people as a result of her early life in a pack. She does well meeting new dogs and is quick to follow their lead. She loves to romp with the other dogs in her foster home and has learned to meet new foster siblings well. Macy can play rough and uses her smaller size to her advantage taking out the bigger dogs legs while rough housing. She also enjoys chase games as she can run underneath things to hide from the bigger dogs if they get to be too much for her. Macy does live with a cat that she does okay with but she will pester the cat at times and has chased it a couple of times. Macy probably would be great with a cat that is active or likes to run around the house as she is more likely to try to chase it than she is a more sedentary cat.   Macy has a sweet soul and is trying her best to overcome her fears and bond with the people around her. Macy is searching for a home that can provide her a stable environment and ongoing work as she continues to grow beyond her past. Macy will likely take between 3 - 6 months to settle into a new home and is going to require a steady commitment from her future home to her ongoing journey. If you have a place in your heart and home for Macy please email Tierhavenrescue@gmail.com for an adoption application or visit Tierhaven.rescuegroups.org for more information. Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.July 4, 2024, 7:28 pm

Story
Zoey is a beautiful young sable German Shepherd female estimated around 3 years of age. Zoey was a stray and we unfortunately do not know her history but Zoey is happily looking forward to having a family of her own.    Zoey is a playful and rambunctious young girl. Her favorite activities include playing in muddy ponds, getting all the love, and inappropriately barking at unknown dogs and people. Zoey is learning how to navigate the world and make new human friends. While Zoey can be a very friendly and social girl she is at a critical point in her life known as the 'fear period' and can struggle with reactivity when meeting new people. It is extremely important that Zoey have a confident, experienced, handler that can compassionately guide her through the safe socialization she needs in order to learn how to navigate the world kindly. Zoey is very much a puppy and while eager to please she is still figuring out what is expected of her and how to rise to those expectations. Zoey has been great meeting volunteers with the guidance of her foster home and with those she knows is a very loving, playful girl. She has enjoyed going on hikes around private property and exploring ponds and mud puddles. Zoey is an active and athletic girl who is going to require ongoing exercise and structure to ensure her growth into a well rounded adult Shepherd. Zoey would be a great running companion, hiking buddy, and would likely excel in a number of dog sports. Zoey is NOT suitable for a home with children at this time.    Zoey is still figuring out other dogs and how to interact in a polite manner. Zoey can be very vocal when she meets new dogs and was defensive with other dogs when she arrived at her foster home. She has since settled in and is able to enjoy playgroups with other young Shepherds as well as group hikes. Zoey is slowly figuring out that she can play appropriately and doing a great job. Zoey will require ongoing structured socialization and guidance to maintain her progress as she is at an age of development where her socialization both in and out of the house is vital. Zoey is NOT friendly with cats or small dogs as she has shown a very high prey drive with both.    Zoey is a young, eager to please, and outgoing Shepherd who is searching for an active, loving, and adventurous home to give her the guidance and love she needs to grow into an even more wonderful companion. If you're the home for Zoey please email Tierhavenrescue@gmail.com for an adoption application or visit tierhaven.rescuegroups.org for FAQsVisit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.July 4, 2024, 7:28 pm

Story
Layla is a stunning female German Shepherd who is estimated around 5 years of age. Layla was a stray therefore we do not know her history or background prior to arrival at the shelter.     Layla is a fun girl who doesn't seem to understand the purpose of humans outside of meal times. She is aloof and generally seems to not understand why the other dogs would bother with human attention - after all humans are only good for their opposable thumbs. Layla defaults to ignoring people unless solicited for attention in which case she is happy to entertain her adoring fans. Layla has a diva energy about her and definitely thinks she runs the shows sometimes. Layla does not typically seek attention or playtime and prefers to chill out and do her own thing.  Layla has had very limited interactions with children at this time but has done well with the few she has met.        Layla is fostering with other dogs and enjoys being the bossy supervisor of anything they do. She tends to ignore the dogs 98% of the time but in the instance that she catches them playing or being too energetic she is quick to be the fun police. Her version of fun is being the fun police it seems and most dogs do not appreciate her reprimands. She gets along well with the more laid back dogs and those that tolerate her controlling nature. She would likely prefer being an only dog or with older, laid back, dogs. Layla is not good with cats or small dogs.        Layla is a beautiful girl who is looking for a patient home that will guide her in becoming a loved family member. If you're the home for Layla please email Tierhavenrescue@gmail.com or visit Tierhaven.rescuegroups.org for FAQsVisit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.July 4, 2024, 7:28 pm

Story
Thumper is a handsome male German Shepherd estimated around 5 years of age. He was a stray so we do not know his history prior to arrival at the shelter.    Thumper is an absolute sweetheart and is extremely friendly with new people. He is a well mannered guy and is very appropriate asking for affection. He loves to have his chest scratched which is how he got his name - he will thump his back leg during chest scratches. Thumper enjoys going on walks and seems to have an okay understanding of leash manners. He is also house trained and great in his crate. Overall, he seems to have experience as a house dog and enjoys being part of things. He has not been around children at this time but would likely do okay with them.    Thumper gets a bit excited with the other dogs but is overall appropriate. He is a large boy so he can be a bit intimidating and he wants to go straight to playing which not every dog appreciates. He has been able to make some friends in his foster home to play with though and is happy for that. He has not been around small dogs or cats at this time.    Thumper does have Heartworm and has begun slow kill treatment (Doxycycline and Ivermectin) for this. We are happy to discuss heartworm, treatment options, and ongoing care needs with you.    Thumper is an awesome dude that is looking for a loving home to call his own. Merv is a handsome young male German Shepherd estimated around 2.5 years old. Merv was a stray so we do not know his history or background prior to arrival at the shelter.    Merv is a social, outgoing boy who happily brings joy and entertainment wherever he goes. He is a beautiful and energetic boy but not always the smartest cookie in the bunch. Merv is people-centric and is an eager to please guy who thrives on guidance from his humans. He has a big heart and is looking to someone to be his 'person'. Merv is an active dog and would be a phenomenal hiking or jogging companion. While he isn't constantly on the go, he isn't a couch potato either. Merv has only been around kids 10 + years of age but he has done well with them.    Merv prefers to be the main character in this storyline and isn't looking to share his home with other dogs. Merv has been able to acclimate to living with other dogs in his foster home but still struggles with reactivity and requires diligent supervision of his interactions with the other dogs. He has greatly improved his leash manners and is doing better at ignoring dogs in public as well.  Merv is NOT friendly towards cats or small dogs.    Merv is a beautiful, sweet young guy who is looking for some much needed guidance and love to help him thrive as a good canine citizen. Story
Gia is a female German Shepherd around 5 years of age. Gia was kept as a backyard dog and struggles with barrier reactivity. She was surrendered to the shelter after getting out of her yard and nipping a jogger.   Gia is a very sweet, loyal girl who is learning how to expand her social circle. Gia adores those she knows and has been an outgoing, friendly girl with all of the volunteers she has met. Gia thinks she is a lap dog and loves to get attention - especially butt scratches. Gia is generally a well mannered girl but does struggle with barrier reactivity around her crate and fences. She can be a pretty vocal, wild girl in this situations but calms down quickly once out or redirected. Gia has not been around children to our knowledge.   Gia does great with the other dogs in her foster home. She is appropriate and friendly with the other dogs although she isn't very playful. She isn't one to romp or roughhouse that we've seen but she does a great job navigating the other dogs in the yard.
