Dusty is a handsome 4yearold German Shorthaired Pointer with beautiful liver and white patched and ticked markings. He is neutered and weighs about 60 pounds. After spending a couple of weeks in foster care, he has really shown us what a wonderful dog he is. With far more positives than challenges, Dusty will make an amazing companion for the right home.
Home Life & Crate Training
Dusty is crate trained and comes with his durable plastic kennel. He happily goes into it when asked, especially if a treat is involved. Initially, he slept in his crate at night and settled very well, sleeping through the night. Over time, he has transitioned to putting himself to bed with the crate door left open and continues to sleep soundly. He may whine a bit when the morning alarm goes off and will sometimes try to nose his way onto the bed to help you start the day.
While his foster parents are away during the day, Dusty is trusted to stay out of the crate. He spends his time relaxing in dog beds, often rotating between favorite spots. Even with another dog in the house, there are no nighttime issues or rambunctious play.
House Training
Dusty is very reliable with house training. Since switching to a highquality food, his digestion has improved and his bathroom routine has become more consistent. He has had no stool accidents and only a handful of urine accidents, all of which were due to missed cues from humans. He does not mark indoors and typically urinates without lifting his leg.
Travel & New Environments
Dusty is an excellent travel buddy. He loads himself into SUVs or trucks, settles in calmly, and does great on both short trips and long rides (over 5 hours). He adjusts well to new environments, especially when he has the comfort of his crate at night.
Other Animals
Dusty may need careful introductions to small animals. He showed curiosity toward a cat but kept a respectful distance after being corrected. Chickens, however, were very exciting for him, and he remained on leash due to strong interest. A home without small livestock would be ideal.
Play & Toys
Dusty has a gentle “soft mouth” with stuffed toys—he carries them, greets you with them, and gently mouths them in his bed. Balls are his absolute favorite. Fetch is his passion, and he will retrieve tirelessly, indoors or out. His focus is intense, and he almost always finds the ball, even in tall grass or snow. He plays fairly with other dogs and is not possessive or aggressive. Once the ball is put away, he settles nicely and relaxes near his people.
Feeding
Dusty eats about 1.5–2 cups of food twice daily and does best with a slowfeeder bowl, as he tends to eat very quickly. He is polite with people around his food and allows handling without issue, though he will bark if another dog approaches his bowl. He knows manners like sitting and waiting to be released before eating, though patience is still a work in progress. Fair warning: he’s a very messy water drinker!
Personality & Behavior
Dusty is calm for a GSP and not overly hyper. He enjoys purposeful exercise but doesn’t have nonstop zoomies. About an hour of activity per day has been sufficient for him. After playtime, he’s happy to lounge at your feet or in his bed. He does well with basic commands like “sit,” “come,” “dropit,” and “off,” and he’s still learning others. He doesn’t jump on people or lick excessively.
He plays very nicely with other dogs and takes cues well. He’s confident without being dominant and often learns good habits by watching other dogs.
Things to Know
Dusty is sensitive about his paws and may need patience and positive conditioning for nail trims. He also sheds a bit more than some GSPs, so a lint roller will be your friend.
His biggest challenge is leash behavior. Dusty pulls hard and can be reactive toward unfamiliar male dogs while on leash, though he does well off leash with proper introductions. Because of this, leash training will be very important in his new home. He’s also athletic and can clear a 3foot gate, so a secure fence or supervised outdoor time is recommended.
Ideal Home
Dusty could thrive in many types of homes—from a quieter household that enjoys daily ball throwing to a home with another friendly dog. He would be a great fit for a firsttime GSP owner thanks to his calm demeanor and adaptability. With continued leash training and structure, Dusty has the potential to be a truly fantastic family companion.
In summary: Dusty is a loving, loyal, ballobsessed GSP with a big heart and a relaxed personality. His leash manners are a work in progress, but his many wonderful qualities make him a fantastic adoption candidate.
