Story
This is Guppy! His siblings all came a few weeks ago and now it's his turn to come to us with his mama (Pearl) on transport. He was found with a bad injury to his knee that the vet in Arkansas said his leg will need to be amputated once he's a little bigger. We will have him seen by our vet on Long Island for a second opinion but from the X-ray I do think it will need to be amputated unfortunately. It does not slow him down though and he is very resilient! Sweet, loving boy. Apply via www.nyshar.org/applications

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Please note that we can not guarantee the age, expected weight or breed of any animal. What we provide is our best estimates based on our experience and the information provided by the our medical partners. If breed and eventual size are of great importance we suggest looking into a breed specific rescue or adopting a full grown animal. Unless otherwise noted, ALL animals are fostered and available for adoption on Long Island, NY.  Biscuit is a sweet, sweet dog. Always looking for some pets and love. Not super high energy but does love to run in the yard with my larger dog. He gets super excited when anyone in the house comes home, He attaches very well to the household residents. He is happy to snuggle on the sofa for hours. He sleeps on a dog bed in the bedroom.  He is also fine to stay in his crate. He can be left in the house alone when no one is home and he is always just snuggled up sleeping. He loves his cozy sweaters and has a blast playing in the snow. He loves car rides too. He has not been around smaller dogs or cats.  He does chase squirrels and birds in the yard, always! Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.March 7, 2026, 6:00 pm

Story
Thomas is originally a rescue whose name was Harrington. He is about five years old, and is the most docile dog I’ve ever owned. He is great with people and other animals. He is house trained, leash trained, and fixed. The only reason I need to rehome him is that I am a pastor who travels too much to enjoy him properly.

Story
Madison is an 11-month-old Great Pyrenees mix with a heart as big as the dog she’s still growing into. She’s incredibly sweet and loves to show it—especially by standing up to give gentle, affectionate hugs to her favorite people. Madison is smart, eager to learn, and would thrive with a family excited to continue her training and help her reach her full potential. As she continues to grow into a large dog, Madison will do best in a home with a secure yard where she can safely spend time. She does have a bit of an adventurous side and has been known to test boundaries, but even when she sneaks off, she never goes far—she just likes to explore a little before coming back. With her loving personality and willingness to learn, Madison is ready to find a home that will give her the structure, space, and affection she deserves.

Story
This gentle giant is Maximus, a five year old Great Pyrenees mix/Best Dog Ever. With a calm, patient, and loyal temperament he is unfazed by the happy chaos that can be part of shelter life, simply taking everything in stride. Preferring a predictable routine, he enjoys frequent walks with the dog manager at the other end of the leash, offering him sage advice, and chatting about their lunch menu. Warm and affable, he makes friends easily (both two and four-legged), due to his effortless charm and welcoming spirit. A stand-out in any crowd, you’ll immediately be drawn in by this mountain-sized canine with an even bigger heart. Take your adoption search to the Maximus…visit Little Shelter today! **Fun fact: In the 17th century, King Louis XIV adopted the Great Pyrenees as the Royal Dog of France, making them popular with nobility for estate guarding** *Maximus is fully grown and housebroken*
