UPDATE on Dove 6-7-2025: Dove is a 16 month old, 35ish lb, Chocolate Lab who was "used" as an Amish breeder dog that GRRAND took in, in 2024. When they were "finished" with her, she was placed with a young woman who was told by the breeder that she was a little timid, but would come around in a few days. As we know with unsocialized breeder dogs, that’s NOT the way it works! We've had a trainer working with Dove and she's now walking better on a leash - inside the kennel boundaries. She will probably never be the dog you take for walks as Dove will be happiest in a very calm, (no kids or chaos) patient, and emotionally secure home with a secure above ground fenced yard (she will be a big flight risk) and another confident/stable dog to show her how to trust people and help build her own confidence. Her people will need to be experienced and committed to giving her the time, and having the patience she will need to go through her adjustments. Dove is most comfortable around other confident dogs. She is making slow but sure progress thanks to the hard work and determination of the GRRAND kennel staff. The work is not done, but the signs are there she will be ok! From her intake 2024 "A young lady surrendered Dove to GRRAND almost six months ago. She had been deceived by an Amish breeder, claiming Dove was 'shy', and assuring the young lady she was getting an exceptional deal and that Dove would quickly come around. It turned out Dove had almost completely shut down, so overwhelmed with fear of people that all she wanted to do was escape. It's heartbreaking how slow progress has been, but the good news is, there is progress. She has such fear in her eyes. She will poop and pee if a stranger approaches her in her kennel. She runs in the play yard with several other friendly dogs, but rarely interacts with any of them. She will not come up to a volunteer, even for a treat. We were told by a trainer that many other rescues would have euthanized a dog that was 'so broken'. But that's not GRRAND. On the improvement side, we now have her on a long leash following the trainers around the play yard. People she's very familiar with can sit in her run, pet her, and leave treats at her feet.. She understands when it's time to come in from the play yard, and will run to her kennel on command. She now has a roommate (Ivy), and we're seeing them snuggle next to each other. Dove has never shown any aggression to animals or people. We are still a long way from being able to send Dove home and progress is slow, but it's there, and one day in the not too distant future we look forward to seeing that twinkle in her eye that all dogs get when they realize they are safe and loved. Daisy (5 year old Lab mix about 60lbs) and her sister Stella (3 year old Goldendoodle about 60lbs) are looking for a home where they will be adopted together and stay together forever. Their owner passsed away and friends took the girls in to help to find them a home. This is what we have been told: Daisy: walks okay on a leash but needs more practice. Daisy paces and has anxiety during storms. When we first brought the girls into the home, our senior dog did not like them and they would get in tiffs, but since they have been very calm with one another other and don't really interact with her much. When Daisy first arrived, she had a significant flea infestation. Since then, she has been consistently treated with flea/tick prevention and has settled in nicely. She is petite, sweet and after her initial excitement upon meeting someone, she is “chill.” Stella: is a sweet, playful dog with a puppy-like personality who would thrive in a home that can continue working on her training, confidence, and leash skills. She is crate trained, and deeply bonded to Daisy. We are hoping to find a rescue placement that will allow the girls to remain together and continue receiving the love and stability they deserve. Daisy and Stella have become very loved in our home and have made significant progress adjusting to a stable environment. The girls were very skinny when they were first "rescued" and their family has done everything to help get them back to a healthy weight and good health in general. The girls are crated separately during the day on work days and also any errand runs. They consider their crates as “safe zones” during the day and may enter even with the family at home. They have free run when they are home with the dogs. They ALWAYS choose to sleep together in an XL crate every evening. They will need a secure fenced yard as that is considered their "exercise zone". Stella is still young and has plenty of energy to burn. These girls are currently living with the family who rescued them and they have a 3 yr old child that the dogs have done well with. The dogs have been with this family for a couple of months, but prior to that, they lived with an older couple who passed away. Our volunteer says "This is definitely a bonded pair of very petite dogs that adore and love eachother and can't be separated." Meet Carter!! Carter is a handsome Golden/Lab mix who came to GRRAND from a hoarding situation in September 2024. While his early life didn’t include much human love, this gentle boy is showing us more of his heart every day. Thankfully, almost all of the dogs Carter came in with, have found their way into loving foster or adoptive homes, and we are happy to say, Carter is in a foster home now too!!! This is what they are telling us: "Carter is quickly becoming quite the couch potato. He is a great companion to sit next to and watch tv together. He is incredibly gentle and although he does not love to snuggle, he will let you give him some soft pets and will delicately eat the treat from your hand. Carter is completely house trained and is great about going to the bathroom in the backyard. He likes to explore but prefers to be inside in a comfy spot. He hasn’t shown too much interest in toys but loves his bed and the couch. Thunderstorms are scary for him so he likes to curl up in the bathroom for safety. When he hears sirens outside, he starts howling along with them and I think it’s just the cutest thing." While our kennel volunteers adore him, Carter truly deserves the same chance his friends received. He will need someone willing to give him a lot of patience and a safe place to decompress and learn what home life feels like. He is a flight risk due to his traumatic background, so an above ground fence is absolutely a must. Another stable dog in the home would be good to help build Carter's confidence and show him the ropes. If you’ve already fostered or adopted a Spencer county dog, you know how special they are. His owner has health issues which are causing the sad decision to rehome Roger. He needs a home with no kids under the age of 16, as he tends to be a resource guarder when he has something in his mouth and someone tries to get it from him, so dog savvy owners would be best for this handsome boy. He is in a foster home and they say: "Roger lives with other dogs and he’s never had a problem in terms of getting into arguments or anything. I’ve NEVER heard him growl. He just forgets his size sometimes when he gets playful. He gets boisterous when he gets some zoomies and it can sort of spook other dogs that are more chill. Most of the time though he prefers to just be napping. When asked if he was good with cats- yes! He is fine with my senior cat... he avoids her. He gets very scared if she tries to swat at him….he's just a big baby basically who couldn’t hurt a fly. Roger is good on walks… just prefers going slow and taking his time, and he rides in a car well. This guy loves snuggling on the couch too! He is a sweet dog and just loves to be around me, loves to get affection and be petted, and follows me from room to room! Roger lets me know when people are at the house because he gets so excited and he barks some when they come in, but settles down quickly and melts into the background after about 5 minutes. He is very well house trained and has never had an accident in the house, and he will bark and let me know when he needs to go out or when he needs/wants something". He used to have a doggie companion who passed away and he is said to miss his friend and is lonely. Jet is a 4.5 year old, 70ish lb, male Golden Retriever who came to GRRAND mid-March 2025. looking for a home where he is the only dog, no cats and no kids under the age of 16. His family has made the very hard decision to re-home Jet as his resource guarding is a concern with kids around for fear of the unknown. He displayed resource guarding behaviours and has been with a behaviorist since intake. We are now ready to provide more training for Jet once we have an experienced dog owner home willing to work with the trainer and Jet. However, he is able to safely participate in structured daycare settings and supervised dog meetups, provided no toys or high-value resources are present. Jett is a dog who requires clear structure, consistency, and informed handling. With proper management and adherence to protocol, he is capable of living a stable, safe, and fulfilled life in the appropriate home. Our trainer will work with you to aid in a successful transition into your home. Jet is house-trained, crate-trained and usually went to work daily with his person, so he was not left home alone much. We are told "He has had obedience training and he knows all the basic commands and a few fun ones. Jet resource guards toys and we have tried numerous training for the resource guarding, but have had no luck. He is really chill and happy, and likes to run in the yard and smell around." Nuggie is a 1 year old, male Golden Retriever looking for a pretty specific type of home, so please read carefully before applying! This pup is needing an experienced ADULT ONLY household with no visiting young kids or grandkids as he has a history of resource-guarding, and this is not anything to take lightly even with Nuggie being so young. He is doing better now, but Nuggie is still in the working stages and GRRAND is being very careful with where Nuggie is placed. He will NOT be considered for any family with kids, so please understand. Nuggie is a beautiful Golden. He has been a perfect gentleman at the kennel with both volunteers and other puppy residents! However, he has had two brief visits in foster homes where he showed some dominance and resource guarding tendencies. GRRAND is willing to spend a significant amount of money to put Nuggie in a board-and-train program with a professional trainer to overcome these behaviors, but before we can do that we need a home lined up for Nuggie to go to immediately after training. It needs to be a home with experienced dog owners and no children. Nuggie is treat motivated and knows simple commands, and he MUST have a family 100% committed to training with him, and giving him plenty of structure, exercise and direction, as this is what he needs. Nuggie has been placed in a home where he resourced something as simple as a pine cone, and it was not positive. He is with GRRAND and by being where he is, he has not been given an opportunity to practice resource guarding. Practice makes perfect... he is not there, but the progress is positive and in the wrong hands, he would’ve gotten better at resource guarding, but his environment does not allow that. Today he’s well adjusted, is not resource guarding his food, plays great with a tennis ball and gives it back. He plays well with other dogs, and has been socialized with a variety of different people and is getting worked with everyday. He is a good boy, and the goal is to make sure he is ready for his forever home. He will need an above ground secure fenced yard to romp and play in in a safe environment. He is very trainable as he likes it and responds well to it and he is also house-trained and crate-trained. This is an opportunity to truly 'rescue' a dog, and in return you will get a beautiful, well trained Golden. This is Ella Brooke. She is a petite (at just 39lbs), female Golden Retriever mix at under a year of age. Some dogs walk into a room with confidence, and others quietly look for a kind hand to tell them everything is going to be okay... Ella Brooke is the second kind. Ella needs a home with an above ground fenced yard as she is a real flight risk due to her fearfulness and we believe that she will do best with another confident dog in the home to help show her the ropes and help build her own confidence. Right now, only a few kennel volunteers are able to pet her, so she is certainly a work in progress. This beautiful cream-colored girl, with her soft wavy coat and gentle brown eyes, came to us from one of the most overwhelmed shelters in Kentucky. Located in a very rural part of southeastern Kentucky, this shelter serves four counties and faces challenges few shelters should ever have to face. Through no fault of her own, Ella Brooke found herself surrendered there, frightened and unsure of what came next. At just about 2 years old and a petite 39 pounds, Ella Brooke spent her time at the shelter doing her best to stay close to the people she trusted. While the barking, noise, and chaos swirled around her, she wasn’t worried about the other dogs—she simply wanted the comfort and reassurance of a human nearby. Shelter staff and volunteers lovingly describe her as “sweet as pie,” and it doesn’t take long to see why. Ella Brooke is still learning that the world can be a safe place. She’ll need a patient family willing to give her time to settle in, build confidence, and discover who she is outside the shelter walls. As she realizes she’s finally safe, we expect her personality to blossom more and more each day. With that, she will require a few meet and greets, and she is located in LVL, and she will not be the dog that you meet one time and she goes home with you. The interested family will need to make multiple trips to the kennel to begin the bonding process before Ella can be taken into a home. Her name carries a special story, too. We already had a few Ellas, so this sweet girl became Ella Brooke, named in honor of the dedicated shelter volunteer who reached out for help and works tirelessly for the animals and shelter. It felt only fitting that this deserving girl carry the name of someone who cared enough to help change her future.
