There’s a softness in his face and a warmth in his golden eyes that hint at both what he’s been through and what he’s still hoping for.When Tanner came to us after his person passed away, he was in rough shape. Thin, exhausted, and so anemic from fleas, even a bath would have overwhelmed his system. Those first days, he spent most of his time curled up in his little apartment, watching us with the weary caution of a dog who wasn’t sure what came next.So we kept things simple. Good food. Supplements. Soft beds. A lot of calm, no-pressure kindness. Slowly he realized the world wasn’t trying to knock him down anymore. His coat brightened. His energy returned. And one day he walked outside with surprising confidence, tail spinning like it had been waiting for its moment to shine.These days he enjoys the basics: a quiet walk, a soft place to nap, and anyone willing to offer a slow back scratch. He leans in with his full weight, which is flattering right up until you remember how solid fifty pounds can be. Pull out a cookie and he looks like a child seeing magic for the first time.Tanner isn’t dramatic, and he isn’t trying to reinvent himself. He’s simply a sweet, steady, grateful dog who appreciates the small, good things. Lily is beautiful, smart, affectionate, playful, healthy… and very confused. She never really learned how to be a dog. At almost two years old, her world has been small, so her emotions show up in supersized portions. She’s trying to understand the universe, and the universe, in all its noisy glory, is a lot.Some dogs shut down when overwhelmed, but Lily does the opposite. She gears up -- zany, zoomy, zippy, and occasionally (playfully) nippy. She wants to be part of everything, everywhere, all at once. What she needs is a patient, kind home that can help her channel all that energy into joy and structure. And here’s the good news: she’s already working with a trainer at Animal Aid Society, and when you adopt her, that support comes home with you. AAS will cover at least three in-home sessions to help her grow into the very good girl she’s meant to be.Lily came to us like a kindergartener starting school midyear -- bright-eyed but unsure of the rules. Nothing about her is wrong; she’s simply unfinished. That’s what makes her wonderful. She’s a dog at the beginning of her becoming.She’s a mix of Beagle, Russell-type terrier, Collie, and Golden Retriever, with her Collie traits shining brightest. People delight her, and she’s beginning to appreciate dog friends too. In her first playgroup with shy Jamie, Lily started as the cautious one, then decided that having a dog buddy was actually awesome.She runs like she’s racing the wind, plays like she’s inventing the game as she goes, and tackles life with joyful intensity.
