Story
I’m looking to rehome my puppy, Winston. He’s very sweet, and well behaved, he’s just a little too energetic and rambunctious for my tiny elderly Yorkies. I’m not looking for any money, I just want him to go to a good home. He is potty trained, but he has a surprisingly small bladder for such a big dog, so you’ll need to be willing to walk him quite often. With him, I’ll bring all of his necessities (dog bowls, food container, bed, cage, toys). however, he does not do well in a cage. He will rub his nose raw against the bars if he’s left there alone. He is a big cuddle bug, and is loyal once he learns to love you.

Story
Tanner is a senior Retriever mix with a gentle way about him. He moves slowly and deliberately, except for his tail, which seems determined to express every positive emotion he’s ever had. There’s a softness in his face and a warmth in his golden eyes that hint at both what he’s been through and what he’s still hoping for. When Tanner came to us after his person passed away, he was in rough shape. Thin, exhausted, and so anemic from fleas, even a bath would have overwhelmed his system. Those first days, he spent most of his time curled up in his little apartment, watching us with the weary caution of a dog who wasn’t sure what came next.So we kept things simple. Good food. Supplements. Soft beds. A lot of calm, no-pressure kindness. Slowly he realized the world wasn’t trying to knock him down anymore. His coat brightened. His energy returned. And one day he walked outside with surprising confidence, tail spinning like it had been waiting for its moment to shine. These days he enjoys the basics: a quiet walk, a soft place to nap, and anyone willing to offer a slow back scratch. He leans in with his full weight, which is flattering right up until you remember how solid fifty pounds can be. Pull out a cookie and he looks like a child seeing magic for the first time.Tanner isn’t dramatic, and he isn’t trying to reinvent himself. He’s simply a sweet, steady, grateful dog who appreciates the small, good things. If you like peaceful mornings, soft snoring, and a companion whose loyalty arrives without fanfare, you’ll understand him immediately.TANNER IS IN FOSTER -- PLEASE CALL THE SHELTER TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT TO MEET HIM!Interested? Story
The other evening, we brought Matilda into the food prep area while dinner was being made. Now, if you've ever been around dogs and food, you know this situation usually requires the reflexes of a professional goalkeeper. But not with Matilda. She quietly settled onto the floor, crossed her front paws like she was waiting for tea service, and simply enjoyed being with her people. She never begged. Never hovered. Never attempted a daring counter-operation involving unattended snacks. She just lay there, content and happy to be included. The only interruption came when she politely got up, walked to the door, and gave it a gentle nudge to let us know she needed to go outside.Matilda walks beautifully on a leash, matching your pace because her favorite place is right beside you. The only thing fast about her is her tail, which becomes an absolute blur whenever she sees a person - less wag than helicopter of happiness. At 8 years old, this Lab/Hound Mix has learned something many humans never quite figure out: you don't have to be the center of attention to enjoy life. She loves affection and pets, but she's equally happy just knowing you're nearby. She's the perfect balance of companionship and independence.Life has not always been kind to her. You can see it in the scars, the worn little teeth, and the fact that she arrived heartworm positive. But somehow, none of that hardened her. If anything, Matilda doubled-down on softness.Matilda is the kind of dog who should be stretched out on a cool kitchen floor while someone makes dinner. The kind who should have a favorite spot by the couch and a person whose arrival sends her tail into orbit.Instead, she's waiting in a kennel.Animal Aid Society will cover the cost of her heartworm treatment even after adoption. All Matilda needs is someone willing to give this sweet, gentle soul the home she's spent her whole life deserving.Come meet Matilda at 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA. Visiting hours are 9am to noon daily, including weekends & holidays.Interested? Come for a visit any day of the week - 365 days a year between 9am - 12pm. Story
Trust. He started with none, but now he has some. Flynn came to us from Sussex after being taken from a horrible kennel/living situation. He didn't know what to make of us, but it was evident he wanted to steer clear of us. Slowly, but surely, he has taken an extra breath and realized we may not be so bad after all. What sealed the deal for Flynn was the magic of playgroup - he met a friend and the world opened up for him. He looked young, happy and free - not worried and stressed. It's a beautiful thing to see in a dog.Flynn is three-years-old and has already been neutered. He is gentle and curious and you can tell how badly he wants to be your friend, but he needs just a smidge of patience. Flynn is slowly realizing that we offer only good for him - he deserves the best and that's what we are bringing for him.Braveness looks amazing on Flynn - come see for yourself! Flynn and all of his friends are available to see every single day from 9am-12pm!Interested? Come for a visit any day of the week - 365 days a year between 9am - 12pm. Story
The only thing more amazing about these puppies than how cute they are is to know that they are survivors. They were found together as strays in Sussex, just living off of roadkill and rainwater. Initial efforts to catch them were thwarted by squatters in the abandoned house the puppies used as a safe place. Starfish was the first to be caught but it took a bit longer for the other three. They are safely with us now and are thriving more and more each day. Their personalities are shining through and they are appreciating a cool place to sleep, endless toys and the knowledge that the next meal is just hours away.Coral is one of the braver puppies. Her curiosity always brings her out and sometimes she is brave enough to come see you.Reef is the most shy among the puppies. He always wants to tag along but quickly retreats if you get too close.Breeze is the girl who puts up a brave front but still has reservations about things. She is becoming more and more open, but cautiousness still wins the day for her.Starfish is the smallest of the puppies but what she lacks in size, she makes up for in adorableness. To watch them play, with something as simple as a stick, is heartwarming. To know all they have been through together but to see that one stick can be fun for all four of them, it's a joy. They are slowly discovering how much fun actual toys can be, but they still want to share them all. They are estimated to be about 11 weeks old and they are healthy! If you want to experience the purest form of love, please come meet our survivor puppies. Watching them interact and play with each other will remind you what it feels like to be young again.Puppy snuggles available at Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton.
