Tanner is a senior Retriever mix with a gentle way about him. He moves slowly and deliberately, except for his tail, which seems determined to express every positive emotion he’s ever had. There’s a softness in his face and a warmth in his golden eyes that hint at both what he’s been through and what he’s still hoping for.When Tanner came to us after his person passed away, he was in rough shape. Thin, exhausted, and so anemic from fleas, even a bath would have overwhelmed his system. Those first days, he spent most of his time curled up in his little apartment, watching us with the weary caution of a dog who wasn’t sure what came next.So we kept things simple. Good food. Supplements. Soft beds. A lot of calm, no-pressure kindness. Slowly he realized the world wasn’t trying to knock him down anymore. His coat brightened. His energy returned. And one day he walked outside with surprising confidence, tail spinning like it had been waiting for its moment to shine.These days he enjoys the basics: a quiet walk, a soft place to nap, and anyone willing to offer a slow back scratch. He leans in with his full weight, which is flattering right up until you remember how solid fifty pounds can be. Pull out a cookie and he looks like a child seeing magic for the first time.Tanner isn’t dramatic, and he isn’t trying to reinvent himself. He’s simply a sweet, steady, grateful dog who appreciates the small, good things. And then there was one. Just Leia.Leia came to us from a home, along with Luke and Tanner. They were ravaged by fleas in a way we had not seen before. All of them had flea anemia and Luke almost needed a transfusion. They each had their own health issues as well.Tragically, we had to say goodbye to Luke because of a mass on his heart. Then Leia and Tanner were welcomed into a wonderful home, but Leia, who was now feeling a bit better, had trouble getting along with Tanner. When none of them felt well, they just coexisted and tried to survive. But now that they feel a bit better, more emotions are coming out.So Leia is back with us - 111 days since she first came to us. She has a few health issues - a heart rate that jumps up and down and an issue with her back. She is on meds for her back and is feeling better, which we are thankful for.But her fluctuating heart rate causes her to sleep, a lot. Sleep can be hard to come by at the shelter but she finds it.When she is up and about, she is delightful. Some days you can hardly believe she is 10 years old. She adores people and is so content when someone just sits next to her as she sleeps. We are seeing that she may definitely prefer to be the only dog in the house.We are looking for a permanent medical foster for Leia. All medical expenses would be covered for this amazing girl. We just want a very soft spot for her to land so she can have some amazing months or years - she so deserves that.If you have room in your heart for the sweetest girl, with the biggest heart, who has had some rough years in her life, come meet our special Leia! We adopted Levi as a lab mix puppy 12 years ago and he has been a wonderful dog. He is house & kennel trained, is great with kids but can be territorial with other dogs if not introduced properly. Levi has never been great on a leash despite efforts so a fenced in backyard would be ideal. Levi is 12 years old but has been taken regularly to the vet and is healthy - we believe he has several more years left in him. Will include cage, brush, leash, collar, all vet records. We just want him to go to a good home and be loved by someone who can spend more time with him.
