Story
Lola is a 15-year-old, 10½ lb small companion dog (likely Maltese/Shih Tzu mix) with a sweet, affectionate nature and calm presence. After a lifetime with one loving owner, she’s seeking a quiet home where she can be a close companion again. She is in good health for her age, mobile, and engaged. Lola enjoys short walks, exploring at her own pace, and staying near her people—whether following you around or resting beside you. She is house trained, sleeps through the night, and uses her crate as a comfortable space. She walks well on a leash and settles when left alone for short periods, sometimes barking briefly before calming. Lola is gentle and people-oriented. She may be shy at first but bonds closely and enjoys being held. She can manage stairs slowly and may appreciate help onto furniture. She has some age-related hearing and vision loss but adapts well. With limited pet exposure, she would do best in a calm, consistent home.

PLEASE READ BELOW FOR OUR ADOPTION APPLICATION LINK MEET DEXTER the MALTI-CHON-POO North New Jersey Dexter is an 18lb 10 yo Maltese-Bichon-Poodle and the sweetest little dude. Dexter was loved his whole life but unfortunately his elderly owner could no longer care for him. He is loving, gentle, and quiet and would be a wonderful companion for someone who is retired or works from home and wants a buddy to hang out with. Dexter loves to nap and EAT and enjoys meandering around the yard sniffing all the smells. In his former home he didn’t have a yard so he is accustomed to going for walks. He lived with another small breed dog in his former home and currently in his foster home and doesn’t have much interest in them. He very much prefers his human but he is pretty independent as well. He is just an all-around easy going guy that is just happy to have a soft bed and yummy food with some pets and loving in between. Dexter is not a fussy eater but his tummy was a bit of figuring out. He landed on a basic kibble and has been regular since. He was brought UTD, HW negative, had a dental and cherry eye removal (it won’t come back), full blood work and xrays, he is neutered, and he is housebroken for outside but he will use potty pads if available. He is a loving little guy that deserves his special person for the holidays. If you are interested in meeting Dexter please fill out our adoption application (link below) and read our process (below and on our website). Please note we do not reply to all applications we receive, unfortunately we do not have the bandwidth to do so at this time. We only reply if we would like to move forward with your application and we will get in touch relatively quickly so please watch your email and answer your phone. Thank you very much in advance for your understanding!! His adoption donation is $450. TO BE CONSIDERED, PLEASE FILL OUT OUR ADOPTION APPLICATION We only process complete applications and providing false information immediately disqualifies you from adopting. https://gingerbreaddogs.org/adopt-overview/adoption-application/ Please follow our Facebook page to see new dogs as they arrive and to keep up on the daily shenanigans: https://www.facebook.com/gingerbreaddogs ABOUT OUR PROCESS: WE ONLY CONTACT APPLICANTS WITH WHOM WE WANT TO MOVE FORWARD. We typically get in touch within 24-48 hours, but it may take up to 10 days. Please watch your email and answer your phone (from 201 area code) after you submit an application. Unfortunately, we do not have the manpower to reply to all applicants. We also do not have the manpower to accept phone calls. Everything we know about the dog is posted above. Our adoption process is on our website. You can see more about our daily operations on our Facebook page. PLEASE call your vet office right now and give them permission to speak with rescues if you are applying to adopt from any rescue. Ask them to mark your file. If they will not speak with us, we will move on to the next application and you will not be considered. We consider out-of-area adoptions on a case-by-case basis. All meet & greets and adoptions are held in north New Jersey, and we do not transport our pups. You must come to NJ. We also do not “hold” dogs. It is “first qualified, first come” and our expectation is you will move quickly to conduct the meet & greet if you are approved. An approved application does not guarantee adoption of any dog from our rescue, and we reserve the right to deny adoption at any point during the process.

Story
Pop Quiz ❓ 🤔 Your child “falls” on your dog. The dog is limping and not bearing weight on his back leg, now growling and snapping when touched or approached by the child and when anyone tries to touch his back end, and clearly freaked out and in a lot of pain. Do you A: Bring the dog to the vet immediately for pain medication and x-rays? B: Wait and let him limp around a few days. Then call an extremely full local county shelter with over 100 dogs to immediately surrender him since he’s suddenly become aggressive and the child is now scared to approach him, You probably got the answer wrong. It’s clearly B. A no-brainer of course 🤷‍♀️. Don’t feel bad, we would have answered wrong too 🤣 Well little Poochie was surrendered to us and shockingly we brought him right to the vet. He was even more terrified, an already unsocialized little guy now in severe pain having to be handled by strangers. His x-rays revealed a completely dislocated hip that requires surgery to repair and get him comfortable again. He’s just a baby, purchased from a pet store as a puppy as a “designer” Malshi (Maltese/Shih tzu), 14lbs and just over a year old. He’s very scared and distrustful right now but we are hoping once he is out of pain and gets his bearings in a new place he will learn to trust and be a sweet little guy once again, at least with those he trusts. He’s had his FHO surgery and is recovering nicely and starting to use his leg a little more every day. He’s warmed up to us and is a lovable spunky puppy with those he trusts, but needs time to warm up to strangers. Please consider a donation toward Poochie’s medical bills, a huge unexpected expense but turning this scared injured pup away was not an option for us, and we know we can rely on you, our followers, to help him heal ❤️‍🩹 Email njwoof@cs.com if you have a calm adult home with no “falling” kids and would like to open your home to him once he’s ready Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. To streamline adoptions, all communication before, during, and after the adoption process is done through email only: we have limited volunteers able to return phone calls. Submit an application from our website www.secondchance.petfinder.com to speed up the adoption process and email any questions to us at njwoof@cs.com. Please check your email regularly for next steps. All our dogs reside in foster care in Northern NJ until adoption and we do not have a central shelter location. We are a small all-volunteer organization focused on rescuing local dogs from area shelters, as well as accepting some surrenders and puppy mill rescues.

Story
Little young senior Lulu got some disappointing medical news… the lump she had removed was cancerous 😞 This 8 year old Maltese/chihuahua had never been spayed before, resulting in a small mammary tumor. The good news is she’s spayed now, her chest x-rays showed no sign of any spread, and it was a low grade tumor hopefully caught early enough. But she will need to be monitored for recurrence or spread. She’s otherwise healthy and has been a very sweet little girl once she bonds, but can be distrustful of strangers and protect her person. All 8 pound personal bodyguard of her 🫡 She’s fine with other dogs and looking for an adult home where she will be loved unconditionally for the rest of her life. Email njwoof@cs.com to meet Lulu in Northern NJ Meet Lulu! We were told this tiny 8 year old scruffy girl was “not friendly” and she was handed to us muzzled, but as soon as we walked her away from her owner she warmed right up to us and has been a sweetheart ever since! She may show more protective tendencies as she settles in a new home of course, so is looking for a lower key adult home that’s ok with a little feisty side. Once she loves you she loves you unconditionally, asks to be picked up and dances for attention all the time. She’s only 8lbs and said to be a Maltese/chihuahua mix, good with other small dogs and a cuddly loyal little lapdog once she bonds and feels safe. Please email njwoof@cs.com to meet Lulu in Northern NJ Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. She was surrendered when a breeder was closing her breeding operation. She is learning what life is like outside of a breeding facility, that play yards are fun, that playing with her kennel mates is fun, that people are not necessarily scary anymore. Good food and sunshine and only kindness is now a way of life. Having never lived outside a kennel, she is working on house training, leash walking and relaxing. Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.  March 7, 2026, 1:08 pm

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.   If you would like to take me home please complete a Pet Adoption Application   Florence is looking for a calm, patient household that understands she is still learning how to be a house dog. Florence is a sweet 13lb female Bichon who came to us when a breeder decided to stop breeding. She spent much of her early life in a kennel, but since arriving at Camp Papillon she has made wonderful progress and continues to learn what being a loved companion is all about.   Florence now enjoys play yards, spending time with her dog friends, and has learned that humans are kind. She is walking on a leash and is discovering how nice treats, gentle affection, and a routine can be. While she can still be a bit spooked by unfamiliar noises, she gains confidence each day with reassurance and patience.   Florence does well keeping her space clean during the day, but nighttime can still be a challenge. Long evenings at the shelter sometimes lead to messes. With a consistent routine and understanding home, she will continue to improve.   Florence is looking for a calm, patient household that understands she is still learning how to be a house dog. With time, love, and guidance, she has so much potential to blossom into a devoted companion.      Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.  March 7, 2026, 1:08 pm
