Story
Pop Quiz ❓ 🤔 Your child “falls” on your dog. The dog is limping and not bearing weight on his back leg, now growling and snapping when touched or approached by the child and when anyone tries to touch his back end, and clearly freaked out and in a lot of pain. Do you A: Bring the dog to the vet immediately for pain medication and x-rays? B: Wait and let him limp around a few days. Then call an extremely full local county shelter with over 100 dogs to immediately surrender him since he’s suddenly become aggressive and the child is now scared to approach him, You probably got the answer wrong. It’s clearly B. A no-brainer of course 🤷‍♀️. Don’t feel bad, we would have answered wrong too 🤣 Well little Poochie was surrendered to us and shockingly we brought him right to the vet. He was even more terrified, an already unsocialized little guy now in severe pain having to be handled by strangers. His x-rays revealed a completely dislocated hip that requires surgery to repair and get him comfortable again. He’s just a baby, purchased from a pet store as a puppy as a “designer” Malshi (Maltese/Shih tzu), 14lbs and just over a year old. He’s very scared and distrustful right now but we are hoping once he is out of pain and gets his bearings in a new place he will learn to trust and be a sweet little guy once again, at least with those he trusts. He’s had his FHO surgery and is recovering nicely and starting to use his leg a little more every day. He’s warmed up to us and is a lovable spunky puppy with those he trusts, but needs time to warm up to strangers. Please consider a donation toward Poochie’s medical bills, a huge unexpected expense but turning this scared injured pup away was not an option for us, and we know we can rely on you, our followers, to help him heal ❤️‍🩹 Email njwoof@cs.com if you have a calm adult home with no “falling” kids and would like to open your home to him once he’s ready Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. To streamline adoptions, all communication before, during, and after the adoption process is done through email only: we have limited volunteers able to return phone calls. Submit an application from our website www.secondchance.petfinder.com to speed up the adoption process and email any questions to us at njwoof@cs.com. Please check your email regularly for next steps. All our dogs reside in foster care in Northern NJ until adoption and we do not have a central shelter location. We are a small all-volunteer organization focused on rescuing local dogs from area shelters, as well as accepting some surrenders and puppy mill rescues.

Story
Little young senior Lulu got some disappointing medical news… the lump she had removed was cancerous 😞 This 8 year old Maltese/chihuahua had never been spayed before, resulting in a small mammary tumor. The good news is she’s spayed now, her chest x-rays showed no sign of any spread, and it was a low grade tumor hopefully caught early enough. But she will need to be monitored for recurrence or spread. She’s otherwise healthy and has been a very sweet little girl once she bonds, but can be distrustful of strangers and protect her person. All 8 pound personal bodyguard of her 🫡 She’s fine with other dogs and looking for an adult home where she will be loved unconditionally for the rest of her life. Email njwoof@cs.com to meet Lulu in Northern NJ Meet Lulu! We were told this tiny 8 year old scruffy girl was “not friendly” and she was handed to us muzzled, but as soon as we walked her away from her owner she warmed right up to us and has been a sweetheart ever since! She may show more protective tendencies as she settles in a new home of course, so is looking for a lower key adult home that’s ok with a little feisty side. Once she loves you she loves you unconditionally, asks to be picked up and dances for attention all the time. She’s only 8lbs and said to be a Maltese/chihuahua mix, good with other small dogs and a cuddly loyal little lapdog once she bonds and feels safe. Please email njwoof@cs.com to meet Lulu in Northern NJ Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. WISE is entirely volunteer-run and all of the donations made to our rescue go directly back to the animals in our care. By partnering with veterinary practices that support our work, we are able to save animals lives and restore them back to health. While some animals only need standard care, others require more extensive veterinary or behavioral care. Regardless of which dog you are applying for, we are looking for adopters to support our program with a minimum donation of $850. The donation may or may not be directly applied to care of the dog you're adopting but rather goes toward supporting all of the dogs in the rescue. We appreciate the understanding of our potential adopters. Please keep this in mind prior to applying.NAME: SnowballBREED: MalteseDOB: May 24, 2019 (6 years 5 months)Home Recommendation: Snowball would thrive in a gentle, patient home that can help her build confidence at her own pace. Shes quite timid and often cowers when someone approaches, but once shes in your arms, she melts right in and will peacefully fall asleep on your lap. Shes beginning to show small signs of trustlike coming forward to lick your hand before retreating againand these moments show just how much love she has to give once she feels safe. A quiet, understanding household that can offer reassurance, steady affection, and a calm environment would be the perfect match for her.WHY DID THEY COME TO WISE: Snowball spent her entire life as a breeding dog in a puppy mill. When her 'breeders' decided they no longer had a use for her, they planned to discard her. Thankfully, WISE was able to step in and rescue her. Now shes ready to start that new chapter!Personality: Snowball is an absolute cuddle bunny who wants nothing more than to be by your side. She happily sleeps in bed with her person and finds comfort just being close. If she knows youre home but not right next to her, shell let out the sweetest little howl until you returnher adorable way of asking for reassurance and company. Shes affectionate, devoted, and truly happiest when shes wrapped up in love and attention.KIDS: Yes, kids 10+DOGS: Yes, a patient dog willing to teach her the ropes on how to be playfulCATS: YesTraining: Snowball currently has a crate set up inside a pen, and while she likes to sit in her crate with the door open, being confined makes her uncomfortable. Shes still learning how to navigate the world on a leash. A harness works much better for her than anything around her neck, especially when paired with a coat that helps it fit securely. She is still figuring out both outdoor potty routines and pee-pad training. She will eat certain dog cookies if theyre placed down for her to eat. Shes very much at the beginning of her training journey and will blossom with patience, consistency, and a gentle approach.Visit WiseAnimalRescue.org to fill out an adoption application.Adoption areas include: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Maine, Vermont, Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, the District of Columbia, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire.

She also loves spending time outdoorswhether its lounging in the yard, soaking up the fresh air, or taking leisurely walks. A home with access to a safe outdoor space or nearby parks would suit her perfectly. Overall, she would do best with someone who appreciates her sweet, gentle nature and enjoys quiet moments both inside and outside together.Personality: Mary Jane is a gentle, affectionate dog that would thrive in a calm, loving home where they can be part of the familys daily life. She adores being around people and will happily curl up for a good cuddle session at the end of the day.KIDS: YesDOGS: YesCATS: YesTraining: Mary Jane is settling in beautifully and adapting well to her new routine. She enjoys going into her crate on her own to rest or chew on her toys. Leash training is off to a great startshe doesnt pull and often walks nicely beside you, though shell continue to need guidance as she grows. House training is going very well! She reliably uses the pee pad if needed and is starting to signal when she needs to go outside, where she potties without any issue.WHY DID THEY COME TO WISE: Puppy mills overbreed to the point where they produce more dogs than they can sell. Dogs like Mary Jane were rejected for reasons ranging from birth defects, being born with the wrong color fur or eyes, or just simply because no one wanted to purchase them. When the dogs are not sold, the puppy mills destroy them, and it is legal to do so. WISE has recently partnered with a group to save these unwanted dogs - healthy, unhealthy, and/or with birth defects - who are destined to be killed for no reason.Visit WiseAnimalRescue.org to fill out an adoption application.Adoption areas include: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Maine, Vermont, Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, the District of Columbia, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire.

She enjoys one slow walk a day, long naps, pup cups, and cheese. Some days shes energetic and curious, and other days shes content to sleep in. Shell make the perfect companion for someone who appreciates a mellow, loving, easygoing senior by their side.WHY DID THEY COME TO WISE: Ginger Snap spent her entire life as a breeding dog in a puppy mill. When her 'breeders' decided they no longer had a use for her, they planned to discard her. Thankfully, WISE was able to step in and rescue her, giving her a second chance to experience the love and warmth of a real home. Now shes ready to start that new chapter!Personality: Ginger is a laid-back girl whose perfect adopter will understand that her favorite things in life are simple: resting, eating, and having a little fun at her own pace. Shes a senior soul who enjoys comfort, cozy naps, gentle affection, and snacks more than adventure. She offers endless sweetness, calm companionship, and the joy of loving a dog who knows exactly who she is.KIDS: Yes, kids 10+DOGS: YesCATS: YesTraining: Ginger Snap loves her daily walk, but its important to let her choose the pace and directionthis is her special time, and she enjoys exploring on her own terms. Because she can tire quickly, her person should always bring a bag in case she wants to be carried part of the way. When she wakes up, her routine works best when shes picked up immediately and taken outside so she could go potty. She does still have accidents, and her adopter should understand that this comes from age and occasional confusion, not misbehavior. At night she sleeps comfortably in her crate, though truly she can curl up and rest anywhere and be perfectly content. With patience, consistency, and kindness, Ginger will be a loving and easygoing companion.Visit WiseAnimalRescue.org to fill out an adoption application.Adoption areas include: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Maine, Vermont, Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, the District of Columbia, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire.
