Story
Charlene ACCT-A-218772 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to medical concerns. Charlene must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER by WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30TH at 10AM. Should Charlene's medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
Charlene, a gentle senior small breed dog, arrived at the shelter on April 26th after being found with a visibly injured eye and a large mass near her hind end. Despite her condition, Charlene was sweet and tolerant from the moment she was brought in, patiently allowing exams and grooming efforts to help her feel more comfortable. When outside, she was very curious about all the sights and smells and happily greeted another dog. Due to her medical concerns, Charlene is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner.

MEDICAL:Triage Exam 4/26:Subjective: Per finder - Found in park, has "injured eye". Also, Pt has very large tumor at hind end.
Objective: Senior F small breed stray, no chip. Pt has constrictive mats around all 4 limbs and ventral neck with diffuse mats throughout rest of coat. Mucoid ocular d/c OS. After cleaning, both eyes may have corneal ulcer and/or scarring. Did not stain ATT. Very large (size of peach?) bilobed, pedunculated mass that is originating from or attached to vulva. Mod-severe dental dz (back teeth worse). Caudal dorsum has alopecia, scabbing and salivary staining on fur. No abnormalities found on chest auscultation or abdominal palpation. Pt is sweet and extremely tolerant of all handling and treatments. Ate the small amount of canned food that was offered.
Assessment: Needs ocular stain and exam. Needs surgical consult for mass as removal may be complicated.
Plan: Start courses of Gaba and NPB ophth ointment. Clipped the worst of her mats off (she was so good for it!). Nails still need trimmed as well as a decent grooming.
Triage Exam 4/26:
Subjective: Possible tumor & eye infection.
Objective: Pt was QAR, really matted on the neck, front legs and back.
BEHAVIOR:Per staff 4/27: Charlene was in an office when I went to take her out. She was easy to leash and was a little nervous walking through kennels, but walked well. Once outside, we hung out and she was more interested in all the smells than interacting with me, but she also allowed me to pet her all over. She was curious about the other dogs who were passing by but didn't pull towards them. When the other dog came out for the meet, she approached him but we wanted to give him a moment to settle since he is blind. Once they were ready to meet, they happily greeted each other with lots of tail wags! She walked well back to the office and immediately solicited attention from the staff member and then laid down on her bed.
Per finder 4/26: Calm around strangers, animals, and children. Walked calmly on a leash. Quiet demeanor.
