Story
Meet Jake Jake is a handsome young mountain cur / retriever mix. Sadly, our Jake has been with us over a year now, which is way too long! Jake LOVES people. He is happiest when he can be with them. His eyes shine and he smiles. His body gets all wiggly in anticipation of pets or a game of fetch. This little guy is incredibly sweet and affectionate. Jake has a beautiful soft coat. He’s a medium size dog, currently weighing 50 pounds. He walks well on a leash. He loves playing in the yards and a containment fence will be important for him. He loves retrieving a tennis ball and would play all day if he could. He is energetic and is eager to be out and about hiking, walking, running or riding in a car. That said he has a calm and mindful demeanor. He is a super smart. He knows some basic commands and we think he is house-trained. Jake is looking for his special person or family to bond with. This young handsome doggo is amazing and deserves a second chance at a loving life. Jake will thrive in a home environment. The quiet and consistency of a real home will do wonders for him. Jake does not like other dogs or kitties though, so will need to be an only pet. If interested in Jake, please submit a dog application online at www.charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org Please call our shelter at 706-865-4135 or email us at smithgallhumanesociety@windstream.net to let us know to be on the lookout. All adopters must complete an approval process which involves a reference check with current/recent vet and a brief home visit if located in the immediate area. We do permit out of state adoptions. Adopters MUST come to the shelter to transport their new family member home. We do not ship nor do we transport them to their new homes. Adoption policies and application procedures are detailed at the shelter website: http://charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org/ under tab All Adoptable Animals. Charles Smithgall Humane Society (CSHS) is a No kill shelter. Animals in our care remain safe with us until adopted. Resident animals are either owner relinquished rescued from area Animal Controls or high kill shelters. The facility usually is operating at capacity with a list of animals waiting for space to open.

Story
💔 Riley’s Been Through It… But She’s Still Full of Love 💕 Riley isn’t new to Castoff — she’s one of our long-timers, a familiar face with a heart as big as her story. This beautiful 35-pound sweetheart has been waiting since 2021 for her true forever home. Riley is a proud graduate of the Colwell Rescue Program, where she formed a deep bond with her detainee handler. He loved her so much that he adopted her after release — but life had other plans, and housing challenges brought her back to us. Then, she found love again with a wonderful mom-and-daughter duo. But separation anxiety made it hard for her to adjust, and once more, she returned to the shelter — still gentle, still hopeful, still ready to try again. Here’s the truth about Riley: she’s not broken. She’s been through it. Like many dogs who’ve spent too long in a shelter, she just needs stability, patience, and someone who won’t give up when things get tough. ✨ She’s smart, loyal, and deeply affectionate. ✨ She loves being active — walks, playtime, adventures. ✨ She thrives with someone home most of the day. Riley doesn’t need perfection — she just needs you. Someone who’ll see past her past and help her believe, once and for all, that she’s finally home. 🐶💗 Let’s make this the year Riley’s story ends with love, not loss. 👉 Apply to meet her today: https://new.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/CPRG/Dog

Story
Meet Curly – A Gentle Soul Searching for Safety and Love 🐾💔 Sweet Curly was saved just in time—from a fate no dog deserves. Since arriving on March 30, 2024, he’s been slowly finding his footing, but the shelter is no place for a dog like him. Fearful and overwhelmed, Curly needs a chance to heal in a quiet, patient, and loving home. Curly isn’t aggressive—he’s just scared. The world has not been kind to him so far, but we believe, with all our hearts, that it’s not too late for this tender soul to discover what it means to be safe, loved, and part of a family. He’s very sensitive to noise and would thrive in a calm, low-traffic home without young children. He would greatly benefit from having another dog—especially a kind and confident female—to help show him the way. Despite his fears, Curly is sweet and longs for connection, even if he doesn’t quite know how to ask for it yet. Right now, Curly is too frightened to be touched, even for something as simple as a brushing. But we know that with time, consistency, and zero pressure, he’ll begin to trust. He just needs someone patient, understanding, and willing to move at his pace. Someone who sees not just who he is today, but who he could become. Curly has never had a real chance. Could you be the one to give it to him? We are seeking a very special foster or adopter—someone who can offer a safe, quiet space, a steady routine, and unwavering patience. In return, you’ll witness the incredibly rewarding transformation of a dog learning, possibly for the first time, what love really means. Please consider opening your heart to Curly. He doesn’t need perfection—he just needs someone who won’t give up on him. Curly is Pets for Patriots eligible. See more here: https://www.petsforpatriots.org/forget-me-not/curly-ga/ 👉 Apply to foster or adopt Curly today: https://new.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/CPRG/Dog

Story
Sweet dog adopted from Florida in 2022. He is has never nipped or even growled at us or our children. He has only barked a handful of times in the time we’ve had him. He’s not the best at commands but likes to spend most of his time laying in bed or out in the sun. Decent on a leash and always wants pets.

Story
Rusty is a handsome fella, a typical mountain cur with an orange tint to a reddish-brown coat.  He has a white chest and is probably about 7 months old and weighs about 35 lbs.  Rusty will be fixed before being adopted but we are waiting for him to get older.  He is otherwise fully vetted.  He is very affectionate, chases balls, loves to play with anyone: kids, adults, other dogs.  He likes to sleep on and off the bed at night.  Rusty is a great family dog.  Please call Ron Stoessell at 985-630-1613 if interested in adopting.October 25, 2024, 12:13 am
