Meet Gracie Beautiful Gracie. What trauma and abuse did she endure until she and her sister came into our shelter? These two young pups were so shut down when they arrived. They would barely get off the ground, they shook in fear and hid behind each other hoping not to be noticed. We noticed them and we’ve been working hard to build their trust and confidence. Leah has since been adopted and is thriving in her new home. Gracie is ready to find her forever home. Gracie is a beautiful hound mix. She is 3 years old. She has a pretty, tan colored coat with white. Her eyes still show her uncertainty, but she’s trying hard to be brave. She is medium in size, weighing about 40 lbs. Volunteers and staff have been working with the sisters to overcome their fear. One special volunteer has worked miracles, getting Gracie into the yard where she loves the sunshine and rolling in the grass. Once she gets to know you, she is full of affection and shows her silly side doing the zoomies in the yard. Gracie wants nothing more than to belong and to feel wanted and safe. She follows people she trusts around and shows what a great dog she is. Gracie is incredibly sweet. She has never ever been aggressive in her fear. She is so gentle and very submissive, but she has found her voice lol! Gracie walks great on a leash. She just had her first walk off site and did great! She’ll do best with a fenced yard so she can be outside safely. She might enjoy another dog in the home to give her confidence and show her the way. A home environment would do wonders for Gracie. Gracie would do best in a family with older kids or a person who works from home. A quiet home with infinite patience and kindness to help her continue her journey of overcoming her past. She will bond hard and be the dog of a lifetime. She is such a gem. Meet Jake Jake is pretty perfect! He's a handsome young mountain cur / retriever mix. Jake LOVES people. He is happiest when he can be with them. His eyes shine and he smiles. His body gets all wiggly in anticipation of pets or a game of fetch. This little guy is incredibly sweet and affectionate. Jake has a beautiful soft rust colored coat. He’s a medium size dog, currently weighing 50 pounds. He walks well on a leash. He can get spooked though and needs a mindful and strong (ish) person who can hold the leash if he gets frightened. He loves playing in the yards and a containment fence is a must. He loves retrieving a tennis ball and would play all day if he could. He is energetic and is eager to be out and about hiking, walking, running or riding in a car. He has a calm and mindful demeanor. He is a super smart. He knows some basic commands. Jake is house-trained and will go to the door when he needs to go out. Jake is looking for his special person or family to bond with. Rusty is a handsome fella, a typical mountain cur with an orange tint to a reddish-brown coat. He has a white chest and is probably about 7 months old and weighs about 35 lbs. Rusty will be fixed before being adopted but we are waiting for him to get older. He is otherwise fully vetted. He is very affectionate, chases balls, loves to play with anyone: kids, adults, other dogs. He likes to sleep on and off the bed at night. Rusty is a great family dog. Sugar looks like a white 45 lb Kimmer Cur & possible Am. Bulldog mix, very shy and sweet, about 3 years old. She was found in Wildcat Subdivision in Murphy, NC in late July and brought to nearby Lost Dogs Run, so weak from starvation, that she could hardly move. Sugar recovered rapidly and now is a very quiet and calm dog who just likes to hang around, following her foster mom. She was obviously used as a breeding dog in the past. She is now totally vetted, house trained, and heart worm negative. However, in mid August she had three 2 minute seizures within 24 hours and was immediately put on levetiracetam (initially 3 500 mg tablet a day and now a month later 1 tablet a day) which totally stopped the seizures. Her medicine is not expensive and her dosage is 1/3rd the normal dose and has no bad side effects. We will soon try with no tablets to see if there are still no seizures. Her low energy nature would make her a great pet for a retired couple. She is just so sweet and wants to stay near home. Each morning, she is let out to explore in the neighboring woods and is back within a half hour, eager to go back in the house.
