Story
Update 8/16/26: We thought Dougie was too friendly and normal to be with us, but unfortunately we were wrong. He’s a quirky Second Chance style dog after all.
This 6 year old Rat Terrier came to us emaciated and starving for both food and attention. He lived with a young child and bigger dog previously and we were told he was friendly with everyone and everything and he seemed that way to us too. He gained weight and was adopted quickly, BUT as he settled in some quirks showed themselves and he’s back and looking for a home that can work with his occasional protective instincts. He is crate trained and comfortable sleeping in a crate, was perfectly housebroken, friendly meeting all strangers and loves to play and wrestle with other dogs. He seems to potentially bond to one person and get protective of them, his space, and rooms at times, especially if allowed on furniture and in bed. He has not bitten but makes some scary threatening noises and will try to chase the “intruder” away. He would be best in a home with just one person he can bond to, and not giving him free access to furniture. Other than that one issue he has been nothing but social and friendly, loves car rides, walks, outings, meeting new people and dogs, doesn’t guard his food, and is a great little dog. 15lbs full grown, neutered, updated on shots and looking for his person.

Introducing Dougie ❤️
The sweetest 6 year old Rat Terrier who actually wraps his long legs around your neck to give hugs!
He was surrendered just before the 4th of July holiday weekend because his owners were moving. He’s painfully skeletal, only 11 1/2 lbs when he probably should be at least 15. His bloodwork was fine and he was immediately trying to scarf down plain dry dog food, so we are going to guess “lack of food” as the cause. And he gained 3 pounds in one week just with regular meals!
He’s a lovable needy guy who loves to cuddle and follow you everywhere, staring at you adoringly with big doe eyes. He has lived with a child and a larger dog and did well, and has a gentle lovable nature. A really special sweet soul looking for some stability and regular meals for the next 10+ years of what will hopefully be a very long life ahead of him.

Rescue doesn’t take holidays- all our “free” time is spent caring for those who need it most. Thanks to your donations we are able to provide urgent vet visits, diagnostics, and care to the most vulnerable little dogs in our community like our little love-starved and food-starved Dougie.
Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. To streamline adoptions, all communication before, during, and after the adoption process is done through email only: we have limited volunteers able to return phone calls. Submit an application from our website www.secondchance.petfinder.com to speed up the adoption process and email any questions to us at njwoof@cs.com. Please check your email regularly for next steps. All our dogs reside in foster care in Northern NJ until adoption and we do not have a central shelter location. We are a small all-volunteer organization focused on rescuing local dogs from area shelters, as well as accepting some surrenders and puppy mill rescues.
