Story
Meet Leia the 2 year old 70 lb. Rottweiler Mix. Once she warms up she is affectionate with a quirky sense of humor. Leia will make an ideal companion for someone looking for a loyal and loving pet. It's wonderful to hear that despite her time at the shelter, Leia's spirit remains bright and her loving heart shines through. Her preference for being the only dog and the need for continued leash work indicate that Leia would thrive in a home where she can receive individual attention and ongoing training. With her love for cuddles and sunny adventures, Leia seems like the perfect match for someone who enjoys spending quality time with their furry friend, whether it's lounging in the grass or going on outdoor excursions.  Hopefully, Leia finds her forever home soon where she can receive all the love and attention she deserves. Any potential adopter would be lucky to have such a delightful companion by their side!       All animals are up-to-date on vaccinations (including rabies if over 4 months old), microchipped, and spayed or neutered. All dogs have been been vaccinated with DHPP and Bordatella (kennel cough) and heartworm tested negative (if over 6 months).    All cats have been vaccinated with FVRCP and current on flea control. Story
Meet Angel, a young canine resident of our shelter who embodies her name in every way. She's an intelligent girl, quickly learning tricks and commands, eager to show off her smarts. Angel's loyalty is unwavering, always seeking to please and protect those she cares about. Despite her shy nature, she never fails to show her sweet disposition, quietly approaching with a wagging tail and soft eyes. Her shyness is not a hindrance but a testament to her gentle spirit. Angel's sweetness and intelligence make her an ideal companion for anyone willing to take the time to earn her trust. Adopting Angel means gaining a loyal friend who will love you unconditionally, brightening your days with her sweetness and surprising you with her intelligence. Let Angel be the loving companion you've been looking for. Angel can be fearful towards new people so we are requiring that any children in her new home are age 10 or older so they can understand her needs. She may do well with other dogs in her new home after a slow introduction. A consult with our behavior team will be provided to discuss her individual needs.Adoption Price: $150

Story
Where are our Rottie lovers?? Yes, we know she is a mix but she is beautiful! Blossom is a 1–2-year-old, 45 pound, black and tan, Rottweiler / Shepherd mix? She came out of the orchards that is a popular dumping ground. Thankfully, she sought help from a nice family that has fostered for AFC before! She is a very smart girl and AFC appreciates the foster family. She is shy but sweet. Can you help her blossom into her best self? She appears to be leashed trained and walks well on the leash. She rides well in the car. We don’t know anything about her past but we want to be sure she has a great future! She is an indoor dog and needs outside privileges. Please be a home owner with a securely fenced yard. Breed / Medium size dog experience is preferred. Unknown with cats. She is scheduled to be spayed but we are looking for her home now. She is microchipped and currently vaccinated. Blossom is waiting to join you for all life’s adventures! If we need to look something up later and you used a different email we are often not able to find it. 2. Adopt a Pet and Petfinders ask you to send us an enquiry. This always delays our response. (Why) a. Our biographies are always very detailed. Therefore sending an enquiry asking us to repeat what it says in the biography causes a lot more work and delays our response. b. We are a small non-profit and do not always have the help to answer as many enquiries as we get. c. Again our Biographies are very detailed and if you just click the link near the bottom of their bio you can fill out an application which we will respond to. 3. For the AFC website (scroll down to the bio at the bottom it says (apply to adopt today- click that link) www.animalfriendsconnect.org 4. Story
My name is Cookies. My human friends call me a gentle giant because I weigh around 90 pounds but think I am a lap dog. I am a sweet, affectionate, treat motivated dog. I know "shake" and will happily give kisses. I am good with other dogs too. I'm being boarded in a kennel in Martinez. But they are shutting down and I'll soon be displaced so urgently need a foster or adoptive home. Food, supplies, and medical care will be covered for any foster. If you want to meet me, you can contact Martina Animal Rescue at martinaanimalrescue@yahoo.com or text Laura at 916-996-5777. ** This is a courtesy listing. **

Story
Petey really is a wonderful, giant puppy! He is sweet, silly, snuggly, and ridiculously cute. He is just about everything that is good in a dog. Petey loves to entertain himself (and others) with his playful attitude and his puppy-like antics. He is a toy addict, and he kindly requests a “new toy allowance” so that he can replenish his stash regularly. He loves to start each day with a happy morning wiggle dance, and he will perform encores throughout the day. Petey is an affectionate fellow. He only gives occasional kisses, but loves to get close to you; nuzzle you; lean; poke at you with his front feet as boxers do; and when he is feeling silly (which is often!), roll around on his back and gently nibble on you. When he’s not being a silly boy, Petey enjoys relaxing by your side and napping (often on his back). He is accustomed to sleeping in bed with a person and snuggling all night. Petey would like somebody who can spend a lot of time with him, and, let’s face it, if Petey’s your pup the feeling will be mutual because he’s just so much fun and sweetness. Petey doesn’t seem to have had much basic training. Truthfully, he can get away without it inside the home because he is an easy, good boy to live with! However, he is overly excited out in the world, on walks, in the car, and seeing new people and animals, so he would benefit from some guidance to help him behave calmly in those situations. He’s a larger-than-average boxer and is a lot to handle when he is overstimulated and excited, which is his default mode out of the home at this time. At this point, meeting people is extremely exciting, but meeting dogs is just too overwhelming for him to handle. Outside the home he’s comfortable only in very low-traffic environments. Petey had a dramatic entrance into rescue, as he was pulled from the shelter while he was suffering from bloat (a medical emergency fatal within hours). He’s incredibly lucky to have survived, and he deserves to see his luck continue by finding a forever home as loving and fun as he is! ———————————————————————————————————————————————— Though we were scheduled to pull Petey from the Monterey County shelter on April 1, on March 31 we received an urgent call from the shelter: their vet believed Petey was suddenly bloating and we were asked if we were still willing to pull him and able to do so immediately. Bloat is an emergency situation that is fatal within hours if not treated surgically, and without help, the shelter’s most humane option was to euthanize Petey. Pulling a dog in critical condition, when we know the cost will be tremendous and a good outcome far from guaranteed, requires a leap of faith. But we had faith in you, so we said, “Yes.” Petey’s condition was such that shelter staff was not sure he would survive the trip to the emergency vet, which was NCBR’s only option. The shelter vet bought Petey time by puncturing his stomach to decompress the gas that was building up. Within an hour of first being contacted by the shelter, a flurry of communication had occurred, an NCBR volunteer darted to the shelter, delivered Petey to an emergency vet, and Petey was being prepped for surgery. The low estimate for Petey’s emergency surgery was $7,000, and post-operative care and medication will increase that cost. But we are overjoyed to say that Petey made it through surgery and is now recovering in the hospital.

Story
Schatzie loves to be held and is very affectionate. She will walk up to you and rest her head on your hand or lap. She is slowly learning how to play catch after watching our resident dog and loves holding a toy in her mouth at all times. Squeaker toys are her jam and there are never too many tennis balls in her opinion. Often times you will find her rolling in the grass and springing back up to all four and ready for the next adventure. She rides well in cars, walks well on a leash and is potty trained. Everyone who meets her says she is an absolute sweetheart. The instant we met, our hearts melted, and could not agree any more.

Story
Zeus is very smart and playful, he loves toys and learns routines quickly. Zeus loves to play chase and tug anytime. He is learning his manners well, but he still barks and gets excited easily so he may do best somewhere he has a little space to play on his own. He is very friendly with other people, he wants to play and will go get his toys and attempt to engage you in tug of war. He likes to chase balls but is still learning “drop”. If you have a couple toys to alternate with, he will fetch. He loves belly rubs. Zeus loves his treats but is pretty mellow about mealtimes. He will take food from your hand gently. We give him food 3 times a day and he often eats it slowly throughout the day, he doesn’t gobble food or overeat. When we need to give him pills he will eat a spoon of peanut butter with meds with no problem. Zeus crates well; he will go in there easily if you point inside and often takes naps in there on his own. His foster parents are home a lot so he is a little spoiled with attention, but he is used to being in his crate alone for a few hours at a time. He is both affectionate and sometimes self-sufficient. He likes to be with you or cuddle, and he also seems comfortable napping in the ‘other’ room. We have not tested Zeus with cats but he has a strong chase/hunt instinct and always goes after birds or squirrels. Zeus is sweet but he does get excited and can jump or be a rough player. He is learning not to jump up so much, but he does seem to like standing up on his hind legs. He is also pretty vocal when he is playing
