Story
Hi, I’m Odie. I’m a 4‑year‑old, 65‑pound black Rottweiler mix looking for a new home where I can feel safe, understood, and supported. My life didn’t start out easy. I was found on the side of the road as a tiny puppy with my two siblings. They found homes, and I stayed with the person who loved me most. Because of that rough beginning, I’ve carried a lot of anxiety and fear into adulthood, but I’m trying hard every day. I’m neutered, house‑trained, and on Reconcile to help with my anxiety. Being neutered has helped me, too. I’m nervous with new people at first, but once I trust you, I bond deeply. I’m very gentle with my family’s baby — she’s five months old — and I’ve never been anything but sweet around her. I haven’t been around other children, so older, dog‑savvy kids would be best for me. I’ve only been around other dogs when I was boarded, and the staff said I did well, but I haven’t lived with dogs myself. I’m not good with cats. I’m playful, smart, and I love my toys. I get the zoomies, I know commands like sit, speak, and shake, and I really do want to please. I just need someone who understands how to guide me. My anxiety shows up in different ways. I can be protective of my person, especially my mom, and I may bark or growl when strangers come near her. I also struggle with the crate — it scares me — and getting me inside can be tough. When I’m left alone, I do best when I’m given access to just one room. My family even set up a baby monitor so they could talk to me and help me feel safe. Since the baby arrived, I’ve been more stressed and sometimes get into things like trash or random objects. I’m not trying to be bad — I’m overwhelmed and unsure how to cope. My family has tried so hard, but with a new baby and my anxiety increasing, they know I need someone who can give me more time, structure, and confidence than they can right now. I would also do best in a household without young children under 14 years of age. I’m looking for a home with an experienced dog owner — someone patient, steady, and confident. Someone who understands fear‑based behaviors and can set clear boundaries while still being gentle. I’m not a match for a timid handler or a first‑time dog owner. I need someone who will help me feel safe, not overwhelmed. Once I trust you, I’m loyal, loving, playful, and full of potential. I just need the right person to help me continue learning how to navigate the world. If you think you might be that person, I’d love the chance to meet you. My family is committed to finding the right home for me and will support a smooth transition. I’m worth the effort, and I’m ready for my next chapter. I’m located in Beckley, WV, but I can be transported to other states. A transport fee may apply. NOTICE: Odie can become overstimulated and redirect to those around him. He has had a single bite incident. His current owner was pulling him away from the screen door as he was barking at the mailman, and Odie turned and bit her hand. Odie would do best going to a home that will provide him with training to teach him that he can relax around strangers and does not need to defend the household.

Meet Hocus !! This handsome boy and his brother Pocus (posted separately) ended up in an overcrowded shelter. Thankfully we were able to get them out safely and they are thriving! ***They need to go to SEPARATE homes*** Hocus is male and approx 9 weeks old. The person that turned them over to the shelter said they are Golden Retriever and Rottie mix but we aren’t sure. He is currently 16 pounds and will likely be a larger dog full grown. He will be given several sets of vaccines, deworming, a microchip and neuter as part of his adoption. Hocus is a happy, spunky and super fun puppy. He loves everyone and everything and enjoys life so much. Really a fantastic personality. He is a very energetic and active puppy that needs a very active home. He is fearless and definitely needs a firm consistent owner to transform all that confidence into positive behaviors. He loves other dogs and loves all people. He can be very rambunctious when playing so another active dog to roughhouse with would be best. He may be to much for dogs that aren’t playful. He is fostered with cats but we can already see he’s going to be to much for them. He tries to chase them and isn’t getting the concept that they don’t play like dogs. Hocus is very loving to everyone but currently may be too much puppy for smaller kids. He’s very excitable and mouthy when playing. Older kids and adopters that have a firm grip on working with puppy behaviors would be best. He is doing well with his training for his young age. He’s really starting to grasp potty training when taken out regularly. He still has accidents but is understanding the concept more and more each day. He is not yet leash trained. He does very well in the crate and doesn’t potty in it. He sleeps in the crate overnight currently with one overnight potty break. He needs crate training from his new family. He has a hard time shutting off his play mode and needs that calm space to learn to settle. He’s been great on car rides but will try to climb in your lap if not properly restrained or crated. Hocus has not had any issues so far with sharing food, treats or toys with humans or other dogs. He loves toys and anything active. He has a very high energy level. He needs structure (routine crate rests, mental enrichment, lots of play time) every day. He is a very energetic puppy. His foster says he has two speeds: asleep and chaos lol. Adopters should be aware that having a wild puppy this age is a lot of work and can be frustrating. He will have accidents. He needs to be in a puppy proof area when you’re not watching him as he chews things he shouldn’t. He needs regular mental stimulation, enrichment, rest time, and exercise. This is not a chill couch potato. He will need a lot of supervision but put in the work now and you’ll have an awesome dog. He’s a sweet boy with a desire to learn and a silly sweet personality. Adopting a young puppy is a ton of work. They will have lots of potty accidents, chew things up etc. You will need to help them learn things like leash walking, crate training and basic manners. It can be a lot of work but the reward is a dog that fits well into your family’s lifestyle if you invest proper time on training with them. Please carefully consider the time and effort a puppy requires before adopting. Home and vet checks required. ♦️5ft or higher fenced yard required (dog parks do not count as having a fenced yard) ♦️He's to much for a home with cats or tiny children Located in Hampton VA. (He will need to be adopted within a 1 hour drive radius) ‼️Please message VillageDogResource@gmail.com directly with questions or to get an application. Story
Tyson has been part of our family since he was 5 weeks old. We are moving to Guam for 2 years and are unable to take him. I have tried for months to find a long-term foster, but unfortunately, I haven't been successful. Tyson is a 120-pound gentle giant who is house-trained, crate-trained, and incredibly loving. He's happiest relaxing with his family but still enjoys walks, playing in the yard, and romping around in the snow. He loves a cool bath on a hot day but refuses to get in a pool or the ocean (we've tried!). He is in great health, gets along well with our cat and small dog, and has never shown any signs of aggression. As he's gotten older, he prefers calmer play and doesn't have the same patience for rough, high-energy dogs, but he does well with supervision. We will ensure all vaccinations are up to date and have him neutered before we leave. Tyson is family, and our only goal is to find him a safe, loving home where he will be comfortable and loved.

Story
I got Ro-Nan for emotional support as a single-bachelor after my mom passed from Cancer. His name is a combination of my favorite book in the Bible, Romans, and my mom's name, Nan. Pronounced Ro-nin, he answers to that, and Roro. I just had a baby daughter and adopted an 8 and 6 year old, and Ro has not adjusted well to the change. He will make an excellent addition to any home that has older children and attentive and loving caregivers. He is high energy and extremely loyal and intelligent. Ro is crate and house trained. He has been spending more time in the crate since the baby was born, so increasing time at home in hour outside the crate in hour increments would help him remember his home-alone skills more smoothly.
