Story
First he's sour, then he's sweet. Much like a sour patch kid, Oscar is the definition of a rascal. The 13-pound, 7-year-old pup was surrendered to Pets Alive because he has one issue: He's a biter! While someone attempted to adopt Oscar recently, he just wasn't having it. So alas, this boy is back at the shelter, and we're working on training to determine his triggers. Given his selective attitude, Oscar is best suited for a dog-savvy home without children.

Story
Officially introducing Sophie! This Shih Tzu on steroids (actually literally right now for her itchy skin) was a whopping 27lbs on arrival but is quickly shedding the extra pounds on her crash diet. She was abandoned in rough shape with severely itchy untreated skin and ear infections as well as chronic dry eye- she was basically a bright red mess when she was brought to the county shelter. She’s about 8 years old according to her unregistered microchip and a very very sweet girl with a cute happy personality. She’s ok with other calm dogs but keeps to herself around them. She loves people and has been a good girl for her medicated baths and eye drops which she will need longterm. She likes car rides and walkies, loves food of course, and is an all around nice little companion for someone who will stay on top of her allergies and weight loss. Email njwoof@cs.com to meet Sophie in Northern NJ Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. To streamline adoptions, all communication before, during, and after the adoption process is done through email only: we have limited volunteers able to return phone calls. Submit an application from our website www.secondchance.petfinder.com to speed up the adoption process and email any questions to us at njwoof@cs.com. Please check your email regularly for next steps. All our dogs reside in foster care in Northern NJ until adoption and we do not have a central shelter location. We are a small all-volunteer organization focused on rescuing local dogs from area shelters, as well as accepting some surrenders and puppy mill rescues.

Story
😞 We are getting tired of telling the same story over and over. Society needs to do better 😡. Another small young designer breed non-shedding dog turned into animal control with a good year’s worth of mats head to toe. Thick painful mats encasing their whole body and legs, very close to the skin, taking us hours to painstakingly shave off at 10pm after another long day of work and rescue. At least in Timothy’s case there were no major injuries or maggots hiding under the mats, just some irritated skin. He’s a nervous but sweet little boy, 20lbs and 3-4 years old, some kind of Shih Tzu/lhasa/poodle/cockapoo type mix with a long body, short legs, and cute little baby face. He’s likes other dogs a lot and is sweet natured overall but understandably gets freaked out for grooming and vetting since he’s not used to it, so will need some positive handling and confidence building and probably some chill pills 💊 to make those situations less traumatic for him and his handlers. But overall he’s a really good boy, crate-trained and seems pretty good about housebreaking, likes his walks, and just needs some socialization in a positive way with new people and situations. He’s been neutered and updated on shots and luckily is otherwise healthy with no longterm medical results of his past neglect, and ready for a bright future and regular grooming appointments. Email njwoof@cs.com to give Timothy his second chance in Northern NJ Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. Story
You know who have really been thriving around here lately? FLEAS! They have run quite rampant apparently over the summer in the local inner city where we pull so many dogs. (Readily available flea and tick prevention clearly hasn’t been discovered there yet). We have seen some of the biggest juiciest healthiest fleas these past few weeks and most long-term infested flea dirt covered dogs that we have had come into rescue for a long time. While we try to help save most living creatures, fleas are not one of them and we have probably killed thousands just this past weekend alone on dogs we rescued. 🪦 ☠️ 👋 🐜 Dogs like Umberto are so much happier and more comfortable without their itchy freeloading friends they bring along with them. This sweet matted senior Shih tzu was filthy and matted, with fleas crawling across the clippers as we were shaving him 🤢 He’s a very nice boy, his rotting teeth have been pulled, he’s been shaved down and neutered, and he’s ready for a better life and forever home. We noticed he drinks a LOT of water and has vey dilute urine… He’s been with us a couple weeks getting a medical work up to rule out Cushing’s and other conditions, but it seems to just be early chronic kidney disease causing it. He is surprisingly housebroken in foster and can hold it for a long period but does pee for a LOOONNNGGG time when taken out and prefers more frequent outings. He has a great appetite and is on low protein diet longterm and will need regular veterinary care and of course grooming and flea and tick prevention to keep him feeling his best. He likes other dogs and is a quiet easy to love little guy, probably at least 10-12 years old. Email njwoof@cs.com to meet the newly flea-free Umberto in Northern NJ Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. Story
Introducing Toby the Terrible 👹 He looks like a perfect friendly little angel doesn’t he?! He’s non-shedding, 10lbs, good with dogs, 3 years old, young and healthy. If we stopped writing here, we would have 50 applications on him tonight. But you know there has to be a catch, right? 🤔 Well, he’s pretty terrible to be completely honest. He looks friendly on the surface meeting new people. You might not even believe our warnings. But once you cross him and do something he doesn’t like, prepare to unleash his wrath. And it’s pretty easy to piss him off. His list of caveats is a long one: Don’t touch his food. Don’t touch his mouth. Don’t pick him up unless he says it’s ok (it’s rarely ok) Don’t be a veterinarian trying to do veterinary type things to him (we aren’t sure who was more traumatized by his vet visit for his neuter, him or the vet). Don’t put sweaters on him. Only pet him if he comes over and asks for attention. But not for too long. A quick pat on the head is all the affection he needs. Don’t lean over him. Don’t bother him when he’s laying down. We are sure there are more we haven’t experienced yet. The good news is he’s much better with dogs than people. He’s actually a wimp and a bitchy little chihuahua girl easily made him cry and back away from his food. Which shows us that he wasn’t inherently evil or disturbed, but being annoyed and mishandled by people and children constantly is probably the root of his little Napoleon complex with the humans. He’s a happy little guy who walks around confident with his tail up and wagging and has a funny little personality if you like to watch his antics. He plays with toys by himself, prances around on his walks, and isn’t overly needy, fine left alone during the day. He’s not scared and suffering, just needs acceptance and space. They can’t all be Velcro lapdogs. So if you understand weird little ones, can resist the urge to kiss and squish his cute little cheeks and whiskers, and are willing to just leave him the f%#! alone most of the time, email njwoof@cs.com to meet our newest little demon in Northern NJ. If you have a pack of other little dogs, that would be ideal for him and maybe you wouldn’t have too much spare time to pet him. Who knows, if he’s ignored long enough he may even change his ways and realize he misses some attention and lose some of his attitude 🤷‍♀️ Stranger things have happened Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ.
