Max is a sweet senior Shih tzu looking for a loving home. He came to us very matted, obese, and with a painful chronic ear infection, as a result of a bleeding mass in his ear. The tumor is benign, but he needs surgery to remove his ear canal in order to fully remove the mass. We are looking for a foster or adoptive home for him to recover from his surgery out of the shelter environment ideally. He's been getting along with other small dogs at the shelter and is a social guy who wants to be with people as much as possible. He's already lost a few pounds with his diet (he came in at a whopping 27!) and is still working hard to get down to a healthy weight. Meet Snowy..... What a Sweetheart Snowy was recently surrendered to the rescue as a retired Breeder mom. That means she spent her whole life being a breeding machine for profit. We take these types of adults in often. They come in broken, my team works really hard to gain their trust. Very quickly they learn to adjust to a "normal " life being a dog and settle in with a new family. Snowy is a 8 year old Shihtzu / Poodle mix. She is 10 pounds and considered fully hypoallergenic. She is white, and she does have some hair staining. That will come out after a few grooming appointments. It's due to the food she was eating and the bedding in which was in her pen. Her face is also slightly stained. That too will stop once she eats better food and gets groomed. *** Pics posted are before and after our grooming ( not professional ). Her sweet personality should win the heart of a family, not her " look " Snowy will be spayed in Feb and will get a dental cleaning. Snowy is a happy little girl, her tail is always wagging. Her eyes sometimes flop up, she looks so adorable when that happens. She will adapt so quickly in a new home. The sky is the limit for this girl, she will be a fantastic companion for someone. Bloodwork and vet check was perfect. She is using a wee wee pad and the outdoors for potty training. Meet Lady.... What a great Companion Lady was recently surrendered to us as a Retired Breeder Mom. That means, she spent her life as a breeding machine for profit at a puppy mill. We take alot of retired moms from these mills to give them a better life. They typically come in broken, our team works really hard to get them settled and to learn how to be a " normal " dog. These are adults that never lived inside a home. Lady is a 7 year old female Shihtzu. She currently weighs 12 pounds. She is considered fully hypoallergenic. Lady is nervous and will do better in a quieter home where she can adjust on her time. She is fine with other dogs, as long as they give her some space. The puppies that she is fostered with due annoy her ( you can't blame her ) Lady will be spayed and also receive a dental in Feb. We are looking to adopt her or do a Foster to Adopt with her. We would need her back in the Butler area for that spay and dental appointment She is using a wee wee pad and the outdoors for potty training. Meet Lizard who came to NorthStar along with 6 siblings when his former owners became homeless. All the others have since been adopted but poor Lizard still waits for his forever home. Lizard is a Shih Tzu mix, approximately 1 year old, and weighing just 11 pounds. Lizard does have some “quirks” we think you should know about. He has a very mild case of cherry eye. The vet has checked him out and it does not affect his vision or his tear ducts and is not bothersome at all to him. In fact, his eyesight is perfect! We believe that Lizard’s former owners had their dogs using wee wee pads and they probably had accidents with that many dogs in the house. When he came to NJ, Lizard was very skeptical about grass! But through time and a big doggie sister, he learned to accept and even like it and finally is housebroken for the most part. He sometimes has an accident in the house so it’s best to keep a weewee pad out. Recently he started going potty in his bed and in his crate when it contained blankets. If we remove the bedding from the crate & leave out a wee wee pad, he does better. Occasionally we put him in diapers - The goal is to make him dislike wearing them so much that he only goes outside. So far so good as no accidents in 2 weeks! Lizard would do best in a home without children or possibly children over 10 years old as he has been fearful of sudden movements and has shown he is willing to go after a child but not an adult. He currently has a human sibling who he has grown to love and not want to attack at any movement made. Ideally, Lizard would be best in a home without kids. Though out in public Lizard may seem fearful of other dogs, he is just fine living with them – check out the photos of Lizard with other dogs and with cats, too. He can get jealous but easily overcomes that in less than 48 hours! We feel that Lizard would also be happy in a home where he was an “only dog”. When Lizard was in a foster home in Texas, he was afraid of larger cats. However, he is good with and enjoys the company of smaller cats as you can see in his photos. He will actually groom them and sleep with them. As Lizard is only a year old, there is some puppy energy but he does tire quickly so it’s short lived. He is a Netflix and chill type of dude! And above all he is very cuddly and will fall asleep in your arms like a baby if given the opportunity! Lizard has been neutered, microchipped and brought up to date on vaccines. The adoption fee for this boy is $425. Mama Etta is a 15-pound Shih Tzu who was rescued from a Texas kill shelter and who gave birth to 5 beautiful pups on 12/1/2024. Per DNA testing the pups are Chihuahua/Shih Tzu mixes per DNA with a bunch of super mutt thrown in. We believe they won't weigh more than 20 pounds when they are full grown. Etta gave birth to 3 males: Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, Chuck Berry along with 2 females: Chaka Khan & Gladys Knight. The puppies are healthy, active puppies who are looking for homes where they will be given the attention and training a puppy needs. They will also require adopters who will not leave them crated all day but who can take them out frequently in the beginning. The adult dog pictured is Mama Etta. NOTE: We do not believe these pups are low/no shed nor are they hypoallergenic.
