Fuzzy Bubbles 🐻 🫧 update and plea for a forever home for 2 sweet seniors🥺 Located in Northern NJ
Our cartoonishly adorable 12 year old Shih Tzu/terrier mixes have had a rough month recovering from big surgeries and a lot of diagnostic tests. The bad news: on paper they have lots of different cancers. (Well, in their computerized medical records actually. No one actually does anything on paper anymore 🤷♀️ 📝 💻). The good news: they have no clue anything is wrong with them and they are feeling great and looking ridiculously adorable.
Fuzzy, the dilute chocolatey colored one with the most amazing expressions, had both a low grade cancerous mammary tumor AND a low grade mast cell tumor. Both were removed with clean margins and no sign of spread at this time, and no treatments needed other than monitoring for future lump recurrence. She’s the bolder of the 2, alert barking at noises and the first to run up and do her greeting dance when you get home. These photos are not AI, she is real and you won’t believe how cute she is in real life.
Bubbles’ medical is a bit more complicated. She also had a low grade cancerous mammary mass removed, no further treatment needed. She came in with a pyometra, a potentially deadly uterine infection necessitating an emergency spay. She had a bunch of concerning bloodwork values that we were initially hoping were connected to the pyo, but continued to get worse even tho she was feeling better. More extensive testing confirmed our suspicions- she has a chronic form of leukemia. Our vet is consulting an oncologist for some non-invasive treatment options that won’t lessen her quality of life. But it seems this form can be pretty slow to progress and she might still have another good 2 years without clinical symptoms… of course  since she had not been to a vet or had bloodwork in many years or ever, we don’t know how long the disease had been brewing and she could crash sooner. But she’s eating great, has put on weight, and is happy and comfortable so deserves to be loved for whatever time she has. She’s a bit more reserved, with a perpetual grumpy cat expression and likes her space at time but also very sweet and quieter than her sister.
These girls adore each other, sleepy together, eat together, and even groom each other. They are fine with other chill dogs- Fuzzy yells at some of the younger ones if they bark or run around too much but also has some playful moments and likes squeaky toys. Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. We are a small all-volunteer organization focused on rescuing local dogs from area shelters, as well as accepting some surrenders and puppy mill rescues.
