Story
Mira is a super sweet 55 lb 5 year old pit bull girl looking for a special forever home. She was found running in Kansas back in November 2020, and we are guessing came from a breeder situation as she was very scared and quickly put on the euthanasia list at their animal control / shelter because she was so afraid of everything. We were able to get her to Iowa, where we took it extra slow with her. She was adopted in July 2021 and returned six months later due to fear issues with lots of people in and out of the home. Mira gets along with all sizes of animals, but doesn't voluntarily approach people for a long time after meeting them so will need a patient adopter willing to let her learn at her pace. Another confident dog will be needed for this lady, as she watches other animals for guidance. A calmer home and dedicated adopter who has a professional trainer lined up to utilize is required, no exceptions -- and we will follow up as needed post-adoption. She is such a gentle thing who wants to dog but doesn't know how yet, and will take time to figure it out. Her adoption fee is $250 and includes all vetting and microchip. If you feel like you have the environment and patience to love her, please apply at www.foreverhomedogs.org to schedule a couple meets with Mira! All adoptions are $300 per dog for puppies under 1 year, $250 for adults 1 - 9 years old and $150 for senior dogs which include spay/neuter, micro-chipped and up-to-date on required shots. Senior dogs, at our discretion, are adopted out at $150 per dog because we know they will have less time with your family and may eventually have more needs as they get older. But we feel these dogs deserve to live out the rest of their lives as part of a loving family.

Story
Marsay is an 11 year old 60 lb pit mix looking for an active retirement home. Marsay is incredibly affectionate and still has the energy of a young pup! He loves to cuddle but also loves going for walks with his foster mom. He is house/crate trained. He does fine with most dogs one-on-one and after a proper intro; we haven't seen him with cats yet and require a meet with any resident pets before adoption. He does tend to guard resources (particularly food and high value toys/bones) so we are suggesting older kids in the home and a dedicated adopter willing to put some one-on-one training time in with him. He loves to meet new people and be part of the action! If interested in meeting Marsay, please apply at www.foreverhomedogs.org!All adoptions are $300 per dog for puppies under 1 year, $250 for adults 1 - 9 years old and $150 for senior dogs which include spay/neuter, micro-chipped and up-to-date on required shots. Story
- Happy boy who likes to interact but also loves doing his own thing and sniffing all the smells; will likely open up in a home environment once he's had time to decompress - Likes to say hi to everyone he meets and see if anyone is hiding treats anywhere! - Enjoys playing with toys and loves to have fun - Knows sit, shake, and down; will sit for treats without being asked- Loves to learn and has great focus, so would be a lot of fun to teach even more skills - Young, noisy or busy children can be too much for him, so he'll be most comfortable in a mature home - Can struggle to interact appropriately with other dogs and may not be interested in having other dog friends; needs to be the only dog in his new home The ARL's shelter software requires that we choose a primary breed for our dogs. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable, so for most dogs we are only guessing at primary breed. We get to know each dog as an individual and do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not breed label. Story
HOW TO ADOPT: This dog is available for adoption by appointment. To schedule a time to meet this dog, please email ARL-Adoption@arl-iowa.org.---- Happy, handsome, playful pup who loves his daily routines - Some of his favorite things are Nylabone antlers, hard rubber bones, walks in nice weather, and naps on the couch - Always happy to see his people and has the best wiggle-butt dance - At bedtime, likes to do some quiet chewing on his toys before snuggling right up against his foster family all night - often under the covers; he's the best snuggler and a sweet, loving boy! - Still a pup with a fair amount of energy, and loves discovering new things to smell and see on walks - Takes his job as the personal household paper shredder very seriously, so adopters will need to keep paper, cardboard or similar objects out of reach or monitor this guy when he's around them - Has been fully housetrained and crate-trained in his foster home; not the biggest fan of his crate but does OK - just remember that any dog may need time to get used to a new schedule - Still learning about the world and sometimes needs reassurance in unfamiliar surroundings; initially wasn't a fan of car rides but his foster family said is beginning to enjoy them now and understand that they can take him to fun places! - While he enjoys being around kids, their quick movements and sudden loud noises can stress him out, so he'll do best in a home where any kids are older and more mature- Can become overly excited at times and forget his mouth manners when his world gets busy; his foster family said calm environments are ideal for him, and having him sit for treats is a great way to redirect him when he does get overstimulated - he's smart, eager to please and a quick learner, so engaging his brain is great! - Arrived with a previous injury to his leg and had FHO surgery at the ARL; has healed well and will even do some hilarious zoomies now but may still need to be watched for fatigue in that leg and may develop arthritis in the future (more info at ARL) - Really great boy whose personality shines when he feels safe and secure; will be a wonderful friend for a lucky family! The ARL's shelter software requires that we choose a primary breed for our dogs. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable, so for most dogs we are only guessing at primary breed. Story
- Happy, gentle, curious dog who can be shy at first and may need time to warm up to new people and things; a quieter lifestyle might suit him best - Once he is comfortable with you he loves chest rubs and will lean into you or tap you for pets - Loves balls, especially tennis balls! - Enjoyed a Dog's Day Out field trip recently and did great in the car and on leash walks - Very treat-motivated, and food is a great way to bond with him - Knows sit, shake, down, stay and bed - he's very smart! - Young, noisy or busy children can be too much for him, but he has done well with calm teenagers; may be happiest in a more mature home - Previous family said he did very well with cats - May take some time to warm up to new dogs and may prefer some dogs over others; would be most comfortable with a slow introduction to new dogs (dog intro required) - Previous family said he was not a fan of loud noises, including loud stereo systems in cars, and that fast movements can also make him nervous The ARL's shelter software requires that we choose a primary breed for our dogs.
