Story
He’s a goofy, lovable 70-pound ham who charges into every day with confidence, charm, and just the right amount of chaos. He may be blind, but you’d never know it. Balin is looking for a home without small dogs or cats—he’s got a BIG personality and sometimes forgets just how big he is. He might be able to live with another dog, but it would need to be a calm, very patient buddy who can handle his enthusiastic greetings. Slow, structured introductions are a must.

Story
- Recently went on a Dog's Day Out field trip and enjoyed getting a pup cup and getting treats and toys at a couple of pet supply stores; also took a nap on his human companion's bed- Walks well on a leash and does great in the car - just relaxes and naps; during a long walk at Saylorville Lake he loved being on a 10-foot leash so he could roam more freely and get his zoomies in - Knows sit, shake and maybe more, and loves to learn with treats; will likely benefit from continued work with the basics to help build skills and confidence, and adopters will receive 25% off ARL training classes to set him up for success- While he was very happy to make new friends during stops on his field trip, in his previous home he was known to struggle in new situations with new people; may do best meeting new people using high-value treats and allowing him to make his own choices, including letting him approach new people vs. people approaching him - Has a funny habit of "shaking it off" where he adds some extra wiggle in his booty!- May be happiest in a more mature home - Tends to be a linebacker-type player with other dogs, which some dogs may not appreciate; will likely do best with a select group of rough-and-tumble dog friends with a similar play style (dog intro recommended) This pet qualifies for our 7-day Foster-to-Adopt program. If you're interested in fostering to adopt, please reach out to fosterinquiry@arl-iowa.org.All adoptable dogs and puppies are spayed/neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations (rabies and DA2PPV as appropriate for their age)The ARL's shelter software requires that we choose a primary breed for our dogs. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable, so for most dogs we are only guessing at primary breed. We get to know each dog as an individual and do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not breed label. Primary Color: White Secondary Color: Grey Weight: 39.5 Age: 3yrs 7mths 1wks

HOW TO ADOPT: This pet is available for adoption at a community event. Please check our Events Calendar for more information. - Likes getting pets all over and will ask for them when he wants more; LOVES butt scratches and seems to warm up quickly to new people - Loves playing with tennis balls (and lots of other toys!) and can be goofy when playing - Had a great time on a Dog's Day Out field trip and did well with a school-age child during his outing. Here's what his companions had to say: "He's very friendly, loves being outside, and loves people and getting petted. He's very active and would be a good dog to take running."- Does well on a leash - Has been making good progress on potty training, will just need some help from his new family to get to 100% - Can be a little unsure of new dogs, but enjoys spending time with dogs who have a similar play style; would likely get along with a calm, low-key dog who could help him build confidence in his new home All adoptable dogs and puppies are spayed/neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations (rabies and DA2PPV as appropriate for their age)The ARL's shelter software requires that we choose a primary breed for our dogs. Story
- Loveable guy who adores everyone he meets and thrives on attention - Always wagging his tail like it's his favorite pastime - Recently went on a Dog's Day Out field trip and had a great time with his human companions: "Ambrose is very goofy and lovable and loves attention! He was anxious in the car, but as soon as he was snuggled, he calmed down. He loved having the windows down! He has a big head but an even bigger heart." - Wiggly and excited in new environments - Will be your little shadow at home and likes to be close to you at all times, whether you're playing or just snuggling on the couch together - Has a curious mind and enjoys tackling puzzle toys and games like tug-of-war - Enjoys going on walks and does best with a harness - Loves to learn and has great focus - especially if you have treats - so would be a lot of fun to train; already knows sit - Always excited for meal times and LOVES treats; great and taking treats gently - May whine at first in his crate, but does great after settling down - Tends to be socially awkward and a linebacker-type player with other dogs, which some dogs may not appreciate; will likely do best with a select group of rough-and-tumble dog friends with a similar play style (dog intro recommended) - Young, noisy or busy children can be too much for him (mature home recommended) All adoptable dogs and puppies are spayed/neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations (rabies and DA2PPV as appropriate for their age)The ARL's shelter software requires that we choose a primary breed for our dogs.
