Story
Marsay is a 12 year old 60 lb pit mix looking for an active retirement home. Marsay is incredibly affectionate and still has the energy of a young pup! He loves to cuddle but also loves going for walks with his foster mom. He is house/crate trained. He does fine with most dogs one-on-one and after a proper intro; we haven't seen him with cats yet and require a meet with any resident pets before adoption. He does tend to guard resources (particularly food and high value toys/bones) so we are suggesting older kids in the home and a dedicated adopter willing to put some one-on-one training time in with him. He loves to meet new people and be part of the action! If interested in meeting Marsay, please apply at www.foreverhomedogs.org!All adoptions are $300 per dog for puppies under 1 year, $250 for adults 1 - 9 years old and $150 for senior dogs which include spay/neuter, micro-chipped and up-to-date on required shots. Senior dogs, at our discretion, are adopted out at $150 per dog because we know they will have less time with your family and may eventually have more needs as they get older. But we feel these dogs deserve to live out the rest of their lives as part of a loving family.

- A total cuddlebug who loves pets and likes to be around her people at all times- Has a big heart full of sweetness - Loves pets on her back and butt - Will be so excited to see you when you get home and might even greet you with a toy in her mouth - Sleeps curled up in the corner of the couch or under a blanket - Smart lady who already knows sit and shake and would probably enjoy learning more skills - Does great in the car and enjoys looking out the window during the ride - Appears to be potty trained and crate trained, just remember any dog may need time to adjust to a new routine - Tends to avoid other dogs and may prefer to be the only dog in her new home (dog intro recommended) - Has done okay living in an apartment with her foster family This pet qualifies for our 7-day Foster-to-Adopt program. If you're interested in fostering to adopt, please reach out to fosterinquiry@arl-iowa.org.All adoptable dogs and puppies are spayed/neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations (rabies and DA2PPV as appropriate for their age)The ARL's shelter software requires that we choose a primary breed for our dogs. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable, so for most dogs we are only guessing at primary breed. We get to know each dog as an individual and do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not breed label. Story
- Happy guy with lots of playful energy, but also knows how to be calm; very in tune with the people he is with - Loves cuddles, booty scratches, treats, toys, quiet times, and being with his people- Great at giving kisses and will sneak them in when you least expect it - Has been on several Dog's Day Out field trips where he went on walks and hikes, met a lot of people and had a great time. Here's what just one of his human companions told us: "He loves sniffing and has amazing leash manners. He was great in the car and settled down quickly. He's a huge snuggler and very smart. He loved meeting a couple of our friends but didn't pull toward people or bark at them. He tired out after a half hour of slow walking and sniffing. I put a towel down on the porch for him and he fell asleep on it soon after. He'd be a fantastic dog for somebody."- Knows sit, come, down, shake, stay and sit pretty- Will make it his mission to keep your yard free of squirrels - Has done well with older children who understand how to be respectful of his space but can become uncomfortable with children who are in his face and don't understand boundaries; may prefer a more mature home at this time - Prefers not to share his living space with other dogs; needs to be the only dog in his home - Needs a home with no cats - Has had a benign gingival tumor removed from his mouth while in our care and may need monitored by a veterinarian for possible recurrence This pet qualifies for our 7-day Foster-to-Adopt program. Story
- Recently went on a Dog's Day Out field trip and enjoyed getting a pup cup and getting treats and toys at a couple of pet supply stores; also took a nap on his human companion's bed- Walks well on a leash and does great in the car - just relaxes and naps; during a long walk at Saylorville Lake he loved being on a 10-foot leash so he could roam more freely and get his zoomies in - Knows sit, shake and maybe more, and loves to learn with treats; will likely benefit from continued work with the basics to help build skills and confidence, and adopters will receive 25% off ARL training classes to set him up for success- While he was very happy to make new friends during stops on his field trip, in his previous home he was known to struggle in new situations with new people; may do best meeting new people using high-value treats and allowing him to make his own choices, including letting him approach new people vs. people approaching him - Has a funny habit of "shaking it off" where he adds some extra wiggle in his booty!- May be happiest in a more mature home - Tends to be a linebacker-type player with other dogs, which some dogs may not appreciate; will likely do best with a select group of rough-and-tumble dog friends with a similar play style (dog intro recommended) All adoptable dogs and puppies are spayed/neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations (rabies and DA2PPV as appropriate for their age)The ARL's shelter software requires that we choose a primary breed for our dogs.
