Story
*****Please note that this dog was part of hoarding case and came from a situation where they lived with a large number of other dogs and had very little interaction with people.****Kirby is a nervous pup who hasn't had the best start to life. It takes him a while to warm up to humans because of his past. But once he learns to trust you, he will be your best friend. Because of his timid nature, we are requiring all humans in the home to visit Kirby before taking him home. Since he's been here, Kirby has greatly benefitted from having another dog around. Because of this, we are requiring that he go to a home that already has a canine companion for him. We are also requiring that all children in the home be at least 10 years old. Kirby has unfortunately contracted heartworm disease, a serious mosquito borne illness, before arriving at the shelter. He will need to recieve his heartworm treatment in his future home, which involves several weeks of low activity/crate rest. This is why it is very important to keep all dogs on heartworm prevention all year round. If you'd like to give this shy guy his second chance, ask a Kennel Technician.

Story
ROCKY is a 1+ year old boy surrendered to VBACAC. We even have his birthday - November 28, 2022. He is a medium size of 53 pounds and although nervous behind the shelter bars, he is friendly once outside and given that time to warm up to new people. He is house trained and walks well on a leash. He can startle easily at this time which makes sense in this shelter environment. Rocky seems to like other dogs and does well in our shelter playgroup. We are recommending older children. Please do your research on his breed as they can have certain instincts which may or may not fit in with your lifestyle and family. Currently Rocky is in a back kennel so if you don't see him, please just ask.   VBACAC 341 S Birdneck Road, VB Open daily 12-5 pm.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.April 28, 2024, 3:31 pm

We are 5 1/ hrs west of VA Beach. We can transport 1/2 way for $100 or we can transport to VA Beach for $200. This will cover just my gas with today's high gas prices. You are welcome to drive to us in Mt.Airy, NC to pick up. Transport is on hold due to vehicle issues. Aggie came from a local shelter along with her pups. Aggie was surrendered because she was VERY PROTECTIVE over her puppies. The former owner had a small child in the home and she was concerned about her toddler's well being. Aggie had always been perfect with her family until her pups were born. Being a protective first time mom is ONLY NATURAL and to be expected, The shelter knew my love for heelers and they knew I would be patient with her. I have handled Aggie extensively and she is a good girl. She would be better with women verses men. She is good with other dogs and I think she would be great on a working farm. That is where she came from, a working farm. She would be best with an active person and she would not do well cooped up in a small apartment all day. SHE IS A WORKING DOG. She is crate trained. She will go to her new home current on vaccines, heartworm tested(neg), current on preventives, deworming and microchipped. She will be spayed. She will receive a complete physical and a certificate of health issued by my vet prior to going home. The adopter will get all her health records with adoption. We require a pre screen application to adopt. You can get that on our website at www.saveamuttkennel.net

Mojo was found as a stray and we made every effort to find his owners but to no avail. He is an Aussie mix and of course with the breed comes high activity. I will say that he loves his down time though! He is NOT an apartment dog. He needs a good sized fenced yard. He will do well with a sister or brother to play with. He hasn't been tested with cats so we don't know about that. The vet believes his age to be about 6 years. He's neutered, vaccinated, crate trained and heart worm negative. He is more than ready for his forever home! ADOPTION FEE $400 PLEASE NOTE THAT WE ARE LOCATED IN TENNESSEE AND YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO MEET OUR PETS PRIOR TO ADOPTION!

Story
This precious girl came from one of the worst hoarding situations that we have ever dealt with. there were over 100 dogs on the property, none of them spayed or neutered. Finally, the authorities went in and they managed to get ALL of the dogs out of there. Filthy dirty situation, sick puppies, you name it. We choose to take Blossom home to our rescue because her eyes were begging us for love and attention. She was very pregnant and two weeks after arriving, she gave birth to 7 heathy puppies! Every single puppy was different, every singe puppy had a different daddy! We think that Blossom had never been paid any attention to because she was so shy. Once we weaned her babies we took her out of the nursery and into the house where she just blossomed! That's how she got her name! Her puppies have long since been adopted and now it's her turn. We actually did a DNA on her and it came back with 4 different breeds, which we kind of figured from the beginning. Australian Cattle Dog, Labrador Retriever, Pit Bull, Boxer. Yes, she is truly a "Mutt!. She is extremely smart and will do anything for a treat. I want her to have a nice fenced yard with lots of room to run. Cattle dogs are working dogs and they need lots of exercise! She is spayed, crate trained, fully vaccinated, microchipped and house broken, truly a gem! Ready for immediate transport. Story
Blue Tellico is a lively 15-month-old Blue Heeler boy that is smart and everything you expect in a Blue Heeler/Cattle Dog. Trained by professionals, Blue Tellico showcases impressive agility and quickness with a strong passion to spend lots of time outdoors looking for adventures and romping in the local creek and looking for squirrels to chase. Despite his energetic nature, Tellico is incredibly affectionate and adores cuddle sessions. The ideal home is a setting with space to run and explore in the woods, a creek or water source nearby for him to play in, too.  BlueTellico gets along well with other animals but isn't suited for households with young children because he tries to herd them and the current children are scared of him and his desire to round them up.  He would truly be good on a horse farm or someplace that caters to his outdoor need. We do encourage anyone interested, to be sure you understand the Blue Heeler breed and are willing to be his leader.  Contact Critter Cavalry Rescue at ccrnewengland@gmail.com PLEASE NOTE:   Our dogs and cats are fostered in Tennessee and can transport weekly up to the Northeast region.  Request an application and learn more about Critter Cavalry at https://www.crittercavalry.com/adoption.April 27, 2024, 10:00 pm

Ethel is the name given to this pretty girl and honestly it is NOT a pretty enough name for this Cattle Dog girl.  Look at this black beauty with a bob tail and at just a year old, she weighs a little over 20 pounds and is fully grown.   She is adorable and needs a great home that will allow her to play and learn and be a wonderful hiking and family companion.  Ethel is said to be mostly housebroken but a little reinforcing and scheduling will help make that 100%.  What Ethel needs is a foster home and soon a real family or person will come along.  She is very special!!!  ccrnewengland@gmail.com PLEASE NOTE:   Our dogs and cats are fostered in Tennessee and can transport weekly up to the Northeast region.  Request an application and learn more about Critter Cavalry at https://www.crittercavalry.com/adoption.April 27, 2024, 10:00 pm

Story
Now here's a young girl who's ready for fun! No need to ask twice--Davina will pack up and travel with you anywhere, anytime! She wears a constant smile on her face because she is just so full of joy! And it's contagious! She will entertain you with her silly antics and loves to do zoomies in the yard (fenced, please)! Naturally, she enjoys her activities because she's only a year old and at 47 pounds, she is a good size. She is fully vaccinated, dewormed, heartworm negative and will be spayed as soon as possible. As for her breed, the dog scanner lists her as a blend between an Australian Kelpie, Black and Tan Coonhound and Catahoula Leopard Dog. Davina was rescued from the Duplin County shelter in North Carolina in the nick of time and she's such a good save! Davina did well with other dogs when she was tested at the shelter and she adores her humans. Her zest for life is inspiring. If you are interested in sharing life's adventures with this sweet girl, then please email adoptsch@gmail.com for an adoption application or go to the website secondchancehabitat.org to download one.

Story
Meet Abby! This adorable young adult medium sized Aussie mix ended up at a local shelter and was struggling to cope with shelter life. In typical breed fashion, she is can be a weirdo and needs a herding breed savvy owner who understands the quirk she brings along. She is working on crate and house training. She is very interactive with adults and so far quite social in general. She struggles with body handling and restraint with strangers but allows all the things from her “person”. She has met dogs, cats, and goats and has done well too! No children for this girl. Her new family will need to be ready for this smart and quirky lady and be committed to training and keeping her mind and body active and learning! Interested families can submit applications for adoption on our website- www.k9Justiceleague.com.

Story
Reintroducing Tundra who has been in foster care for over a year with no interest in Newport News. Tundra is a 14 month old Australian shepherd/hound mix. His coloring is white with tan spots, and he loves being pampered at bath/brush time. He has learned to have his nails cut as well. Tundra is extremely smart and masters puzzle toys within minutes. His favorite toys are a chewing toys or a squeaky toy. Tundra is crate trained and knows basic commands. He loves to go on hikes with his foster family. He has had experience with other dogs from 5lbs to 100lbs and finds friends in them all. Another dog may help him adjust to his new home faster but is not necessary in his forever home. At 70 pounds he is a complete snuggle bug! His favorite part of the day is getting to cuddle with you in bed or on the sofa. He likes all people but LOVES women and will steal your girl if you are not careful. His foster dad has taught him that guys time though means new adventures like exploring Home Depot. Tundras has in simple terms cone vision. He can only see with limited vision in one eye. He does not let this stop him though and his foster sisters have even taught him fetch (he can follow them to the toy / follow it if it’s tossed close). Tundra has a condition called Microphthalmia, which has caused his left eye to be too small, red and blind. Microphthalmia is a genetic malnutrition that happened during gestation when his mother did not receive the right nutrients. This condition causes the eye to be underdeveloped. His right eye has limited vision. With his limited vision he takes time to warm up to new environments, people, and objects in the dark. When nervous or scared at a new object he may bark with a very deep bark but he will run and hide as soon as he does. Due to this we do not recommend homes with children under the age of 15/16. One of the ways Tundra has adapted to his limited vision is through touch and so you will often feel him walk against your leg or put his paw on you or notice him sitting almost on your feet. His vets only recommend eye drops to his eyes when it is very windy or he digs in something like sand or dirt due to the possibility of getting something in his eye. The eye drops are over the counter. His perfect forever home would have an active lifestyle, a fenced in yard, and patience to allow Tundra to warm up to new surroundings. If Tundra sounds perfect for your family, please fill out our application: https://www.australianshepherdsfurever.org/adoption-application There is an additional $20 microchip fee which includes registration and transfer to his new family. All adoption fees are used for future rescue efforts.
