Meet Penny, a 6-year-old Basenji mix with a heart full of love and a spirited personality. Originally from Mexico, Penny made her way to California in December 2020 and was quickly adopted. However, she was returned when her previous family found out they were expecting a baby, and Penny wasn’t comfortable around the little one. Penny is a sweet and loving dog who thrives in the right environment. She’s fully house trained, never has accidents inside, and is a joy to have around. Penny enjoys long walks and playing with her toys, but she also loves relaxing and taking naps next to her favorite people. While Penny is not good with other dogs, cats, or kids, she is an ideal companion in a home where she can be the sole focus of attention. She’s working on her reactivity to other dogs on walks, so a patient family willing to help her through her anxiety would be the perfect fit. If you’re looking for a loyal and affectionate dog who will shower you with love and appreciate a calm, dog-free home, Penny is ready to become a cherished member of your family.

Sonny and Cher were found running the streets in South LA, weaving in and out of traffic and circling the blocks scavenging and desperate for food. He had on a collar so our director watched them for a good 30-40 minutes, hoping they would run home... They suddenly ended up on the steps to the 77th Police Station where they found some old pizza in a planter. They then proceeded to patrol access and people were too afraid to approach the entrance to the Police station with them guarding the steps, and no one came out or stopped to help, so with only 2 cans of cat food and 1/2 a sandwich from lunch our director decided to see if they would be friends or foes. Immediately Cher ran up and said hello -- it took about 20 minutes but she was able to get her to jump in the car... Sonny was a whole other story ... it took about 2 hours to catch him, but eventually, the car-trap worked and the duo, as if finally sensing they were safe, curled up into each other for a long rest. Neither dog was chipped, Cher was in heat, and Sonny was her devoted bodyguard ... we don't know if/when/how they came together -- but once they were both fixed the bond was broken. He is SUCH a little love -- he does have a bit of separation anxiety now -- but that's likely because he finally feels safe. He is gentle and sweet and seems to have been potty trained but had clearly never been on a leash and it didn't seem like he was touched very much -- now he LOVES it! And he's getting used to the leash and is a champ in a crate - such a fast learner and a very good boy. We have been looking for their people but no one has come forward and it's time they found homes and someone of their own who can really love and care for them. He’s now learning how to live with humans and patiently waiting for his forever family🙏 • Personality: Gentle, Friendly, Laid-back Charlie is a sweet, gentle, calm boy! He may need a little extra time to warm up to adult men, but he truly loves people. He’s secretly very affectionate and enjoys cuddles and physical touch — even from new people. / Energy level: medium–low. He relaxes well on his own at home with no separation anxiety. Zero aggression! • Affinity with -Cats: Not tested -Dogs: Great around other dogs (when freely roaming) -Adults/Kids: Good with all people. Just needs a little extra time to warm up to men. • Housetrained: Fully potty-trained for outdoor bathroom • Walking Manner: He walks happily and responds well to handling. A volunteer spent time with Beck and had this to say: Say hello to my new boyfriend Beck. Yall- I am in LOVE. (It’s ok, hubby knows). This young (I’m guesstimating 2yrs) pittie mix is the sweetest, loveliest, gentlest boi I’ve met in a long time. In his kennel he looks a bit like an angry guy- but it’s honestly because he’s super nervous about…. Everything. He protects his space in the kennel where there’s just so much to feel stressed about. In the play yard he was friendly if a bit slow to warm up, but ended up bringing his toy into my lap to play within moments. I also had the absolute pleasure of taking him on an adventure today- we went to the park and did a long walk and explored. He was an absolute dream. Easy on the leash (we even ran a little bit) and mostly non reactive. Squirrels? Meh. Birds? Meh. Other dogs? Curious but not motivated. Other humans? Not sold on them. Loud cars? No thank you. Sniffing everything and enjoying some quieter down time? HUGE fan of that thanks. This lovely man will need a family with calm energy and patience, a willingness to help him find his confidence and learn when it’s appropriate to get concerned, and no small loud and grabby kids as that would stress him out way too much at this stage of his development. He`s a big snuggler too, so you must be willing to share… well, everything. Your couch, your lap, maybe your snacks. Beck is one of the loveliest dogs ever- you just need to get him outside the kennel so you can meet the real him that is scared, but hopeful. I am HEAD OVER HEELS for this guy and if my house weren’t full of small pushy personalities I would be trying to fit him into my home, without question. Please someone I know, or a friend of friend, go adopt him so I can be an auntie forever!! Just go into the Burbank Animal Shelter and meet him.
