Story
This little gem is a medical special needs pup. Sasha is a very sweet and easy going 1-2 year old Bichon mix; she is about 11 pounds. She loves all people and dogs and enamors everyone she meets. She walks well on leash, sleeps through the night in her crate, and does relatively well with her alone time. She has an adorable way of getting one's attention and loves to play with other dogs. Unfortunately Sasha was most likely hit by a car at some point and her spine is broken in her lower back. She has full use of all her legs, but she's completely incontinent. Her foster assists her to empty her bladder 3-4 times per day (easy to do, and a potential adopter could be taught to do it). If she is assisted to empty her bladder, her diaper stays dry and her fur stays clean. Due to her condition, Sasha is prone to UTIs, but helping her to empty her bladder regularly decreases this potential. Luckily she doesn't show any signs of pain and has a full life expectancy. Sasha will need to live with someone who is home most of the time. She'd probably do best in a home with a yard, so she doesn't always have to be in a diaper, but she would also be an easy dog for an apartment dweller as she doesn't necessarily have to be walked first thing in the morning and last thing at night. Since Sasha is "non-shedding, she will need regular grooming. Grateful Dogs Rescue incurs substantial veterinary and other expenses in rescuing our dogs. In order to recoup some of these costs, we request a tax-deductible donation for each adoption. The suggested donation for Sasha is $200. If you are interested in adopting Sasha, please complete our online adoption application at  https://www.gratefuldogsrescue.org/adoption-process/   . One of our volunteers will get back to you. Adoptions are local, confined to the SF Bay Area. We will consider applicants outside the 9-county San Francisco Bay Area for Sasha, as long as applicant is able to travel to Oakland for meet and greet, and pick up. April 30, 2024, 8:07 pm

Story
Rumors are flying over here at Muttville. Yen, the new lady in town is said to have lived a wild life full of adventures and sunbeam naps. We've heard that she gets along with cats, is potty trained, and used to date Prince Charles when they were both in collage. Maybe if you're super lucky, you'll become her best friend and she will tell you all about it. Here's some notes from her foster: Yen is house trained if taken out regularly and does not need many potty breaks. I took her out pretty often to figure out her potty needs, and it seems like she generally needs to go as soon as she wakes up in the morning, after she has breakfast (about an hour later), late morning/noonish, late afternoon, and after dinner. If she didn't need to go, she'd poke around a bit and then just sit/lay down. She can't do stairs but was fine with me carrying her up and down our stairs. She mostly napped, alternating between a dog bed with a blanket and laying on the floor next to the bed. She slept through the nights in a dog bed. She'd wake up just before I was going to bed a few hours after she first fell asleep, so I'd just pet her a bit until she started falling asleep again. She generally didn't pay any attention to our cat or dog. Every once in a while she'd notice our cat and walk towards her from curiosity, but our cat would always go somewhere else and avoid interacting with her. I don't think she sees very well, but she was able to navigate around our furniture/doorways without bumping into anything. She does have some separation anxiety. We haven't had to leave her alone very often or very long so far, but she barked/cried the whole time if she was awake while we're gone. Because she doesn't see/hear very well, she just needs a reassuring touch when she wakes up and starts walking around "looking" for someone. Then she knows she's not alone and just settles down again for another snooze. She's low energy and doesn't seem interested in walks. She does seem to enjoy sniffing around for short outings and is very comfortable being in a carrier. I took her with me for a Sunday lunch with a friend, and she sat quietly in the carrier the whole time without whining or trying to get food. I suspect her previous person carried her around a lot.

Story
Kristmas was fearful and very nervous at the shelter when we rescued her. She is a special behavior needy dog. Kristmas needs time to warm up and feel safe. She can be handled and picked up. She was neglected with matts and had very long toe nails. She was probably too isolated prior and then left in the streets. Kristmas was fine meeting another dog on leash. She was nervous at our vet but they were able to care for her and clip her long nails. She is now in a quiet foster home and relaxing. At first she stayed in her crate inside dog pen and just watched. The next day she felt safer and ate a little. Finally came out and walked out to yard for potty biz. Sniffing and hanging out with the foster home's gentle friendly small dog. Kristmas needs time to decompress and feel safe. Will need an experienced guardian and quiet home situation with attached back yard. More info. to come. She will only eat home made cooked food. Foster home makes chicken or turkey with rice and veggies. She won't eat store bought kibble nor can. Update on day 2: At foster home she is very slowly warming up. She follows their 2 dogs around and out to yard. She needs a very experienced home with another dog to feel safe. Best no kids or older kids 10 yrs and up. She will flinch at fast movement and is head shy. She needs more time in her foster home to learn and be less fearful. She slowly will jump on the sofa and go to foster mom to sniff hands. Kristmas is eating very little now and likes Weruva canned food. She is still too nervous to eat a full meal. So maybe in another 2 weeks she will be normal but shy behavior. She was probably too isolated since a puppy so new people and places make her very nervous. Need to move slow and let her set her pace to trust and feel safe. She will not walk on leash but can be guided on leash at home with another dog around. Will take time for her adjust. She is not a dog for social outings or parks. Mar 2024: She is now walking on leash with a harness. Follows people and foster home's dog on walks. She was a very picky eater but foster home makes home-made meals of meat/veggies/rice for her and their dog. She now loves her food!May 2, 2024, 12:40 am
