Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. It's not often a chow mix is labeled a "nice, friendly" dog by shelter staff. That's because most chows and mixes are very uncomfortable in the shelter environment, and they'll do whatever they need to to keep people they don't know from handling them. Mostly they're scared, not aggressive, but they often get mislabeled. Bear, however, was a friendly guy from the get-go. Shelter staff really enjoyed him, but perhaps because his skin needs help, no one was interested in adopting him. So we got him out of there and got him some medical help.  We think Bear likely was an outside-only dog in his previous life. He really enjoys the yard at his foster home, and makes great use of the doggy door to head out there frequently. He's got rough calluses on his elbows, often a result of lying on hard surfaces, like packed dirt or concrete. He has lost hair in some places, but it is growing back. Our vet says he'll need to be on ketaconazole for life because of his skin issues, but we're hopeful that a good diet will make that unnecessary. We're working on it.  Bear gets along with other calm dogs. We aren't so sure about cats, but we are working on that. He's a voracious eater -- likely a sign he was on the street for awhile (he was found as a stray), or perhaps because he didn't get fed regularly in his earlier days.  He is a real sweetheart who loves to give kisses but won't crowd you. He isn't interested in getting on the furniture but likes lying in his dog bed -- or, again, outside, weather permitting. He's a dear, dear boy who needs a chance to learn to be a happy dog in a happy home. We don't think he's ever had that chance.   Although he likes being outside, he must go to a home with a secure yard where he will be inside most of the time, and he must sleep indoors. No most outside-only life for Bear! If you rent, we require written proof that your landlord will allow you to have a chow mix.   Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.May 18, 2023, 12:03 am

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Cinnamon is a sweet girl who got lost and found herself at a shelter. She had bad skin, some bad teeth (including some that were broken), and some other health issues that the shelter cleared up. Her hair grew back, and she proved to be a happy, friendly girl. When we found a foster for her, we took her out of the shelter. She had to have an infected tooth removed but since then she's been doing well.  She needs a home with other dogs. She gets nervous when left alone but is fine with another dog or dogs around. Obviously, she and your current dog(s) will need to get along, so they will need to meet before an adoption is finalized. She takes medication for her liver that you can buy at your vet or online. Her best doggie friend(s) will be calm and older. They can be any size.  We'd love to find a foster home for her if a permanent one isn't available. She is at a board and train facility and does well there, but we know she would be so much happier in a home with a doggy friend to keep her company when you're away. Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.May 18, 2023, 12:03 am

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Winston was found as a stray and wound up in a shelter. We don't know how it happened, but this beautiful boy had a broken right front leg. We rescued him and had surgery done to fix his leg. His "special need" is that he's got a fair amount of hardware in that leg and will be unable to engage in serious contact sports like agility and flyball. While we think he'd love the running aspect of either, we've never known a chow to take either very seriously, so we aren't too concerned about that. However, it also means that, while he's a great walking and hiking partner, serious running isn't in his future.  Winston has had some obedience training and is doing well on leash walking (though there's room for improvement) and is even better on sit and other cues.   He has been going to daycare, where he especially likes the small dogs. He lives with a Chihuahua in his foster home and gets along great with her. He hasn't shown any signs of aggression, but boy is he eager to get to his food when it's put down. He had to be crated for three months after his surgery, and he did guard the food in his crate a little bit. But, when fed in an open space, he does fine. He is fine around other big dogs, but when they get too bouncy or playful, he takes offense and tells them so. So small dogs good, big dogs better avoided.  He'd do best in an adults-only home and needs to be where someone is home all the time or your neighbors won't mind some barking when you leave. Day care is also a great option for him. So, no apartments or condos, please. A fenced yard is optimal. We will consider other options but would much prefer a secure yard.  A kibble-only diet didn't suit his digestive system well, so he is on a diet of raw food (Steve's) and supplements. He loves treats. All kinds of treats. (We are including a photo of Winston with his cone, which he no longer needs, because it shows his striking coloring.)Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.May 18, 2023, 12:03 am

Adoptions are scheduled by appointment only after an application has been filled out and approved. If you are interested in adopting, please download an adoption application from our website TORescue.org and submit over to us. Please do not visit any shelters or rescue groups prior to coming to ours. We do this to keep our animals healthy and prevent diseases from entering our rescue. Marty is a special-need purebred Chow Chow. He was an orphaned bottle baby at one week old. He is generally a sweet boy but is prone to outbursts when agitated. Because of this, he sees a veterinary behaviorist and is on Zoloft to ease his anxiety. The medication has helped quite a bit, and his fosters have seen a considerable difference in his behavior. Marty needs to be in a home where he is an only pet and with no small children. With the right home, he has the potential to be a sweet and loyal companion. His foster has also agreed to pay for his following two behaviorist appointments to assist with acclimation into his new home. Please consider giving this beautiful boy a loving forever home. To learn more reach out to our Rescue at 909-267-9715 or visit our website torescue.org to download an adoption application for Marty.
