Story
Tater is a sweet boy! He landed in the shelter as a stray and Barktown pulled him. He loves affection and will work hard to please you, so he will thrive in training! We are not sure about cats, but he seems fine with other dogs. If you want a ride or die loyal companion, fill out an application for Tater at www.barktownrescue.org    Tater's adoption fee is $100The shelter software system requires that we choose a predominant breed or breed mix for our dogs. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable so for most of our dogs we are only guessing at the dog's predominant breed or breed mix. We strongly encourage you to select your new pet by looking at each dog's individual personality and pet qualities rather than relying on a breed label that is only our best guess.    Our adoption fees vary from $150 and up.  All of our dogs are up to date on vaccines, heart worm preventives, and flea/tick medication, and will be spayed/neutered prior to adoption. Portions of your adoption fee also help care for the sick and injured animals that we take in.  Thank you for supporting us and considering a rescue dog!    February 10, 2026, 4:20 pm

Story
Shawty (knows Lilah) is a sweet girl ready to find her forever home. She currently weighs 35 lbs at  1.5 years old. She is thought to be a collie/shepard mix. She will need a family with a confident dog sibling to help her adjust to the humans in the house and would do best in a calm household. It took her a long time to come out of her shell in her foster home so she will be a foster-to-adopt to ensure that she is a perfect fit. Housebroken Great on a leash Did well crated but isn't often in her foster home Intelligent and fast learner    January 28, 2026, 4:48 pm

Story
Paige joined our family in July of 2018 after being adopted from the Boyle County Humane Society. We believe she was around a year and a half old at the time. She came to us already housebroken and knowing basic commands such as sit, lay down, and fetch. Paige is a sweet, laid-back dog who enjoys lounging around the house just as much as she enjoys being outside to play. She has spent most of her life living with other dogs and cats and has done well with them overall. Recently, we’ve had some challenges after adding a small dog to the home. While they initially got along, ongoing tension has developed as the younger dog has matured. We feel Paige would do best in a home where she can be the only dog or in a calmer environment that better suits her as she gets older. This decision has been incredibly difficult, and Paige is deeply loved. Our hope is to find her a loving, stable home where she can relax, feel secure, and continue to be the wonderful companion she has always been.

Story
Max hasn’t been dealt the easiest hand in life. Due to severe hip issues, he is considered a special-needs dog and will require special management moving forward. While the exact course of treatment is still being determined, Max’s adopter or foster will need to be willing to stay in contact and work closely with us as we move forward together. Currently, Max receives Librela injections and joint supplements to help keep him comfortable in his daily life. But Max is so much more than his medical history. Max is an absolute joy to be around. He has a wonderful temperament with people and is sweet, goofy, bouncy, and full of playful charm. Watching Max experience a snow day is pure magic, his happiness is contagious. He also loves soaking up the sunny days and lounging around, happiest when he’s near his favorite people. At HSOC, Max has done well with several other dogs. Because of his hips, rough or overly long play sessions can cause him to limp, so a home with lower-energy canine companions (or dogs who understand when playtime is over) would be ideal. A meet-and-greet will be required to ensure any potential dog friends are a good match. While in a temporary foster home, Max showed some separation anxiety, which is not uncommon for shelter dogs adjusting to big changes. Our trainer, Jim Kats, is happy to provide a transitional lesson to help Max settle comfortably into his new home. Max is special in every sense of the word. He’s looking for someone who can see past his challenges and appreciate the incredible, loving dog he is.

Say hello to this gorgeous girl, Maple! We all know meeting new people can be intimidating, so she is a slow introduction kind of gal. Once she warms up, she becomes a loyal, affectionate companion who will happily cover your face in kisses. Maple is a little bit of everything. She adores her time inside as a couch potato, as well as being a full-blown race car driver in the yard. This chunky girl is eager to be a part of a family who will give her all of the treats and attention she desires.
