Story
Tater is a sweet boy! He landed in the shelter as a stray and Barktown pulled him. He loves affection and will work hard to please you, so he will thrive in training! We are not sure about cats, but he seems fine with other dogs. If you want a ride or die loyal companion, fill out an application for Tater at www.barktownrescue.org    Tater's adoption fee is $100The shelter software system requires that we choose a predominant breed or breed mix for our dogs. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable so for most of our dogs we are only guessing at the dog's predominant breed or breed mix. We strongly encourage you to select your new pet by looking at each dog's individual personality and pet qualities rather than relying on a breed label that is only our best guess.    Our adoption fees vary from $150 and up.  All of our dogs are up to date on vaccines, heart worm preventives, and flea/tick medication, and will be spayed/neutered prior to adoption. Portions of your adoption fee also help care for the sick and injured animals that we take in.  Thank you for supporting us and considering a rescue dog!    February 10, 2026, 4:20 pm

Story
Shawty (knows Lilah) is a sweet girl ready to find her forever home. She currently weighs 35 lbs at  1.5 years old. She is thought to be a collie/shepard mix. She will need a family with a confident dog sibling to help her adjust to the humans in the house and would do best in a calm household. It took her a long time to come out of her shell in her foster home so she will be a foster-to-adopt to ensure that she is a perfect fit. Housebroken Great on a leash Did well crated but isn't often in her foster home Intelligent and fast learner    March 7, 2026, 3:29 pm

Story
Paige joined our family in July of 2018 after being adopted from the Boyle County Humane Society. We believe she was around a year and a half old at the time. She came to us already housebroken and knowing basic commands such as sit, lay down, and fetch. Paige is a sweet, laid-back dog who enjoys lounging around the house just as much as she enjoys being outside to play. She has spent most of her life living with other dogs and cats and has done well with them overall. Recently, we’ve had some challenges after adding a small dog to the home. While they initially got along, ongoing tension has developed as the younger dog has matured. We feel Paige would do best in a home where she can be the only dog or in a calmer environment that better suits her as she gets older. This decision has been incredibly difficult, and Paige is deeply loved. Our hope is to find her a loving, stable home where she can relax, feel secure, and continue to be the wonderful companion she has always been.

Story
Our favorite special needs sweetheart, Max, has been thriving in his foster home for a whole month now. We have wonderful things to report! This 1-year-old Collie mix has proven himself to be fabulous with human kiddos. Max absolutely LOVES the outdoors and will happily search out the sunniest spot in the yard to lounge in. When he’s feeling playful, he’ll show off the CUTEST speedy zoomies that are guaranteed to make you laugh. Max has also shown what a well-mannered boy he can be. While his foster family recently had plumbing work done in their home, Max handled the commotion like a champ. We had concerns about his separation anxiety, but he is improving with that as well! He also does great with other dogs, though he can only go home with a calm, low-energy companion who won’t roughhouse too much. Extreme play will cause him to limp. While his foster family absolutely adores him, they are not planning to adopt, which means his forever family is still out there waiting to find him! Adopting Max may sound a little intimidating because of his “special needs” label, but we’re here to help you understand what that means. Max was born with “special” hips, and while the exact course of treatment is still being fine-tuned, he is currently doing just fine with injections and joint supplements. Max is an ideal candidate for a foster-to-adopt situation while we proceed with his medical care. If you’d like to learn more about Max, submit a foster or adoption application, and someone from our dog team will be in touch!
