Story
If you missed out on adopting Lorenzo, you still have another chance at a doxie… meet Louis! This 9 year old tweenie-sized smooth red Dachshund was surrendered when his owner passed away. He has that determined stubborn doxie spirit that only a true dachshund lover could appreciate and needs an experienced adult home. He will have his moments when he wants to be left alone- when eating especially don’t mess with him. He was not a fan of the vet either, and while he doesn’t seem to mind meeting other dogs, doesn’t like sharing his people and stuff with them so is best living as an only pet. Email njwoof@cs.com to meet Louis Due to COVID-19, we will not be holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we can schedule socially distant appointments with a specific dog outdoors at our vetâ??s office: VCA Morris Plains Animal Hospital 3009 Rt 10 East Morris Plains (Denville on GPS) NJ 07950 Now is the perfect time to open your home to a needy dog! Submit an application from our website www.secondchance.petfinder.com to speed up the adoption process All our dogs reside in foster care in Northern NJ until adoption. We are a small all-volunteer organization focused on rescuing local dogs from area shelters, as well as accepting some surrenders and puppy mill rescues.

Story
8/27/23 update on Quentin: Tiny Quentin has come a long way from the terrified dramatically screaming and snapping partially hairless little guy who first came to us, and is looking for his perfect forever home! This shy young little one still can be nervous with strangers and fast movements, but once he bonds he’s a lovable cuddler with his people. He’s gained a lot of confidence from watching the other dogs in his foster home and will definitely need a calmer home with at least one other little dog in the household to help with some of his fears. For a little guy he has a BIG mouth, and will loudly sound the alarm when he sees or hears any threats approaching your home- serial killers, delivery men, friendly neighbors: they all fall in the same category of potential danger ⚠️ as far as this tiny man is concerned. Apartments or city environment would probably freak him out a bit too much (and anger your neighbors) he’s more of a suburban kind of guy. Email njwoof@cs.com to meet little Quentin by appointment in Northern NJ Introducing Quentin! This tiny scared young man’s previous life must have been a bit of a horror movie before he found his way to a local shelter, and he came to use screaming and snapping, skinny, covered in likely contagious mange, with dewclaws curled completely around and puncturing and actually growing through his skin. There’s probably a reason why thumb-piercing isn’t a thing and it was quite painful just looking at it 🤢. Flash forward after a few weeks isolated in our care and medically he’s a new man! He’s been eating well, hair starting to grow back, nails cut and sores healed, ear infections treated, and gaining weight! Psychologically, he’s still a bit scarred from whatever occurred or didn’t occur in his past home, and he’s a very scared panicky guy but warming up and wants to be sweet. He’s only 7lbs, about 2 years old or less, and has been neutered and updated on shots. We think he’s some kind of longhair doxie/chi/spaniel mix maybe but could be any toy breed combo, and is looking for a quiet patient adult home that will let him come to them at his own pace. Email njwoof@cs.com to meet Quentin in Northern NJ Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. To streamline adoptions, all communication before, during, and after the adoption process is done through email only: we have limited volunteers able to return phone calls. Submit an application from our website www.secondchance.petfinder.com to speed up the adoption process and email any questions to us at njwoof@cs.com. Please check your email regularly for next steps. All our dogs reside in foster care in Northern NJ until adoption and we do not have a central shelter location. We are a small all-volunteer organization focused on rescuing local dogs from area shelters, as well as accepting some surrenders and puppy mill rescues.

Story
Meet Buddy. This sad grumpy but handsome senior longhair doxie needs an adult only home that is ok with his quirks and grumpiness and will respect his space. His owners originally rescued him from a home where children were pulling his beautiful long hair and tormenting him, and he’s held onto that grudge for years and wasn’t going to tolerate the arrival of a new child in his new home. He knows what that means and learned his lesson the last time. He doesn’t seem to mind other small calm dogs. He can be a bit ferocious around his food and behind any kind of gate or barrier and needs to be allowed to come to you on his terms not yours. Doxies are royalty 🤴 and he demands to be acknowledged as such- no eye contact when meeting him, he doesn’t have time to chit chat with mere peasants and strangers. He’s got some arthritis in his back legs so no stairs for him, he’s a ramp guy which is better for his doxie back anyway. But otherwise is still pretty spunky and healthy and plans to live a while so please don’t adopt him if procreation is in your 10 year plan. He’s not going to be happy being displaced by a baby yet again. If you are an unconditional doxie fan, njwoof@cs.com to meet Buddy in Northern NJ Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. Story
Meet Leigh! This adorable little girl will celebrate her 3rd birthday on 3/29 and we are hoping she will be partying in her permanent home 🎉 🥳 🎂 She’s another of the 10 little ones we recently took in from a home with too many dogs to care for. She’s skittish but warming up, food motivated and loves other dogs. We think she looks like a perfect schnauzer/wirehaired doxie cross but she and her relatives are all supposedly a mix of doxie, poodle, Shih tzu, and some type of terrier. She’s 15lbs and in good health, and will be looking for a calm patient adult home with at least one other compatible doggie friend to help her adjust- she would go into complete culture shock if not around other dogs! Email njwoof@cs.com to meet Leigh in Northern NJ Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. Story
Meet Rebel, the most terrified of the group of 10 little ones we took in from a home that ended up with too many dogs due to lack of spay/neuter. So of course she’s our favorite 😍. She peed all over the aco that removed her from the home and peed and pooped all over us the day we got her. We do love a good feral project dog. You can see her progress over the past 2 weeks as you swipe through her pics, from totally shut down and feral, avoiding eye contact, trying to make herself invisible, and panicking and running from us, to actually starting to come up and greet us happily and seek out petting! She’s not even 3 years old, still a baby and her inner puppy energy comes out more and more each day. The has the perfect short long body of a standard wirehaired doxie but with an almost human-like face stuck onto her. She was a chunky 21lbs and has lost a couple already but should be more like 17 probably. She had never been to a vet or left the only home she ever knew before, and will panic and likely regress at first moving to another home but we can see what a sweet special girl she has the potential to be with the right person. She loves and takes comfort from other dogs and will need a calmer adult home, preferably just one or 2 people, and at least one other dog friend she can learn from and follow. She’s never been walked on a leash or experienced so many normal dog things, but she’s been learning to follow the other dogs out into a fenced yard to go to the bathroom and also uses wee wee pads. She has a shorter wiry coat than most of the others from her group and is not a non-shedding breed that requires grooming more than a good brushing every now and then- gotta love that scruffy wash and wear coat! Email njwoof@cs.com if you think your home might be a good fit for our special shy girl Rebel. She’s been spayed, updated on shots, and is fostered in Northern NJ Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. To streamline adoptions, all communication before, during, and after the adoption process is done through email only: we have limited volunteers able to return phone calls. Story
A very pregnant Mama Birdie was found wandering the streets of Bastrop, TX, last October and taken into rescue. On 11/3/2023 she gave birth to a litter of Dachshund/Great Pyrenees mix puppies. The pups are ready to be adopted and would love to find forever homes where they can get the love & training they need as pups to grow into wonderful adult dogs. Norman and his siblings are in foster care but are not living in a home environment so they will need help with socialization, house training, crate training, etc. Norman currently weighs 23 pounds. If you are interested in adopting Norman, please complete an adoption application at www.northstarpets.org and be sure to mention his name, ATDR NORMAN!March 27, 2024, 10:32 am
