✨Meet Dougie!✨ Dougie is a 5-year-old Golden Retriver mix who came into us as a surrender from a commercial breeding facility (aka Puppy Mill) in Lancaster County. Dougie had a very difficult life before coming to us, being used as a breeder dog his entire life. He is shut down at this time but is slowly starting to give us his trust. We are confident he will make a wonderful family member for a very lucky family, who understands his past and gives him the time he needs to trust them and his new surroundings. Dougie loves other animals, and will thrive in a home with at least one other dog. Adopting a puppy mill survivor is life-changing—for you and them. For these dogs, everything is new and often overwhelming: people, houses, stairs, leashes, food bowls, collars, toys, TVs, ovens, doorways, pavement…the list goes on. They need adopters who can move slowly, be patient, keep expectations reasonable, and provide the understanding and tools they need to grow into happy, confident companions. Patience, positive reinforcement, and understanding are key! She came to us from a commercial breeder when she was no longer wanted, and despite everything, she has remained a soft, sweet girl who just wants to feel safe and loved. Lila is still building her confidence, but her progress has been beautiful to watch. She allows all handling without hesitation and just needs a couple of minutes to warm up to new people. Once she feels secure, her affectionate, loving nature shines right through. She was briefly adopted, but returned after a few days because she was very uncomfortable with the female adopter and young son, although she was perfectly comfortable with the male adopter. Here at the rescue, she has been absolutely lovely with all our volunteers — men and women — and she’s been a star at adoption events, happily accepting gentle attention from everyone she meets.
