Story
* To be considered for a meet/adoption, please read the full biography to see whether they may be a good fit for your home, then submit an online application at www.dpsrescue.org.* This dog will be at the Palo Alto Pet Food Express on Saturday, August 22nd from 12–3 PM (unless adopted prior to the event). All DPS Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, flea/tick treated, and microchipped prior to adoption.   Adoption fee: $800 Blinker: Love at First Wink   Blinker is a 1–2 year old, 15-pound Havanese/Shih Tzu mix with a non-shedding coat and a talent for making everyone feel like the most important person in the room. He was born with one eye that does not function correctly, but it does not cause him discomfort or slow him down in the slightest. Sometimes it simply looks like he is giving you a permanent little wink—and honestly, it only adds to his charm.  This affectionate, gentle boy is happiest when he is near his people. He does not demand constant entertainment; he simply wants to know where you are so he can choose the perfect nearby spot for his next nap.   Blink and the Day Begins   Blinker wakes up around 7 a.m., ready for his morning potty break and a 20–30 minute walk. Walks are one of the highlights of his day, and he believes every patch of grass and interesting bush deserves a thorough investigation.   Once home, he eats breakfast and enjoys a short training session involving his favorite form of motivation: treats. After completing his morning responsibilities, Blinker happily settles beside his person and naps while they work or go about their day. If you move to another room, he will likely wake up, follow you, and resume napping in the new location.   Dinner is served around 6 p.m., followed by another 20–30 minute walk. In the evening, Blinker enjoys a little playtime before curling up on his blanket while the family relaxes. At bedtime, he sleeps peacefully in his pen on a cozy bed or blanket, preferably positioned near his people.   Professional Companion, Part-Time Player   Blinker is curious, affectionate, and wonderfully gentle. He can be nervous for the first couple of days in a new environment, but even while feeling uncertain, he is willing to come out of his carrier and quietly investigate his surroundings. Having a trusted person nearby gives him confidence, and it does not take long for his loving personality to emerge.   Once comfortable, Blinker becomes a devoted little shadow. He follows his people from room to room, accepts all available pets and belly rubs, and enjoys cuddling on the couch. After a while, he may relocate to the floor, but he will still make sure he is sleeping close enough to keep an eye on you.   Blinker is primarily a champion lounger, although he is happy to participate when it is time to play. He has a calm energy and does not need to be the center of attention. Give him a comfortable blanket, a few good walks, and someone nearby, and he considers life a tremendous success.   Friends of Every Size   Although Blinker does not currently live with another dog, he has met dogs off-leash and enjoys making new canine friends. He listens when another dog communicates a boundary and is quick to adjust his behavior appropriately.   Blinker has also spent time with a two-year-old child and was consistently calm and gentle. If the child became more playful than Blinker preferred, he simply moved away or found a quiet place to retreat. He has shown no aggression toward children, adults, or other animals.   When visitors arrive, Blinker may give a brief alert bark, but he stops once they enter. He does not jump on guests and is friendly and eager to collect his welcome scratches. He lived side by side with cats in his first foster home.  Adventures at Blinker Speed   Blinker absolutely loves his walks. He does not chase squirrels or bark at dogs or people. He may show interest in saying hello, but his behavior is friendly and curious.   Blinker is housetrained. He had a couple of accidents during his initial adjustment period but has since settled into a reliable routine. He does not use potty pads and has not had access to a doggy door.     About That Wink   Blinker was born with one eye that does not work correctly. It blends into the fur around his face and can make him look like he is winking. His limited vision does not prevent him from walking, playing, exploring, or living like any other young dog. It does not bother him, and he does not seem to realize there is anything unusual about him.   His non-shedding coat will require regular brushing and professional grooming to remain healthy, comfortable, and free of mats.   Building Confidence When Alone   Blinker loves companionship and is still learning that it is safe when his people leave and may vocalize. His foster family is helping him develop a positive association with the crate by feeding him and hiding treats inside. He is comfortable sleeping in an x-pen at night, which is an encouraging sign. His adoptive family should be prepared to continue working gradually on crate training and comfortable alone time. Don’t Let This One Blink By   Blinker is incredibly kind, gentle, affectionate, and ready to devote himself to a family of his own. He will greet your return home as though it is the greatest event of the day, accompany you from room to room, and make every quiet evening a little cozier.   If you are looking for a sweet companion who enjoys outdoor adventures, belly rubs, and an impressive number of naps, keep your eye on Blinker. He is ready to wink his way straight into your heart. August 18, 2026, 7:11 pm

Story
Update 6/14/26 from her foster home: Gigi is a sweet gentle soul who's looking for her forever home. Estimated to be around 6-7 years old she's a calm easy-going companion who loves nothing more than curling up on the sofa next to her person. Despite having limited vision due to cataract. Gigi gets around remarkably well. She listens for your footsteps and follows you from room to room can use the stairs and is great on walks. Her adaptability is amazing and everyone who meets her falls in love because she's so cute gentle and fluffy. What makes Gigi special is she's quiet well mannered and rarely barks. She's cuddly and trusting and just wants to be near you. She's dog friendly and does great with other dogs and feels most secure with a canine companion. She's house trained and an easy eater. Friendly with everyone she meets people and dogs alike. What she needs is a quiet home. Her limited eyesight makes her sensitive to loud or sudden noises so a calm neighborhood is ideal. She'll also need a future spay and potential cataract surgery can help fix her vision and continued eye supplements. She also has a small lump on her stomach which hasn't grown but should be tested. Since arriving in her foster's home Gigi has gained healthy weight and her coat has grown back soft and fluffy. Early vet tests didn't show signs of diabetes or other health issues. She's a happy healthy girl who just needs someone to call her own. FFR has already invested thousands into her early vet care and is fundraising for cataract surgery and dental care. If you'd like help donations are always appreciated: furryfriendsrescue.org/donations Original posting: We rescued Gigi from a distant shelter. The shelter person told us that she was maybe about 4-5 yrs old and very friendly. Great with dog buddy in her kennel. One shelter staff person said she didn't notice all the medical needs that Gigi has. Gigi was neglected matted and very dirty with bad smell. Dog friendly. When she went to our vet he told us she is older and that she needed dental and had some gum inflammation has lump on belly (need to remove & biopsy) not spayed and has double cataracts (vet did eye dye tests). Blood and urine tests shows no diabetes which can cause cataracts. Vet gave her eye drops. She has poor vision but sees light and large objects. She is getting around fine at her foster home and does great on walks. She can manage going up and down stairs. We have spent over $1000 so far on first exam eye blood & urine tests shave down/bath medications and all her vet care. Healthy foods eye vitamins and drops have help her. Healthier and sees well. Donations are greatly needed and appreciated. Thank you. 🥰 https://www.furryfriendsrescue.org/donations 3/14/26 Foster Home Update: Gigi is a really remarkable little girl. I’m surprised by her everyday! She’s able to get around quite easily on her own despite the occasional light booping against my leg or a wall. She listens for my footsteps and able to follow me around. She’s quiet and easy going. Friendly with other dogs and everyone we meet on the street. I’m amazed by how easily she’s adapted to San Francisco streets. Her poor eyesight doesn’t seem to be slowing her down. She’s trusting cuddly and just likes to be nearby. She’s also an easy eater and house trained. All my friends and neighbors who’ve met her think she’s the sweetest.YouTube: https://youtu.be/mQwFiUOiwdAAugust 16, 2026, 1:05 am

Adoption fee: $800 Moose: A Lot of Personality in a Little Package   Moose is a 10–12 month old, 15-pound Havanese/Shih Tzu mix with a non-shedding coat, an enormous smile, and enough personality to live up to his very large name. He came to DPS from the shelter with his friend Mouse, but Moose is now ready to branch out and find a forever family of his own.   Friendly from the moment he arrived, Moose approaches life at full speed. He runs, jumps, plays, and attempts to cover the faces of his favorite people with kisses. Once he has burned off some of that puppy energy, he is equally enthusiastic about squeezing himself into the nearest available lap.   Moose on the Loose   Moose usually wakes up around 7 a.m. and heads into the backyard for his morning potty break. He eats breakfast around 8 a.m. and dinner at approximately 6 p.m.   During the day, Moose spends time playing and relaxing in the living room. When his foster family runs errands or needs to focus on a meeting, he stays comfortably in his crate. He receives frequent backyard potty breaks and goes on at least two walks each day.   Moose is always ready to participate in whatever his people are doing. He would love a family that will include him in daily activities, help him burn off his youthful energy, and appreciate his firm belief that personal space is completely unnecessary.   The Happiest Guy Around   Moose has been outgoing, affectionate, and energetic since day one. He loves people and greets them with his whole body—usually while smiling, wiggling, jumping, and trying to distribute as many kisses as possible.   Although Moose is a little ball of energy, he is also a serious cuddler. If a lap becomes available, he will find a way to occupy it. He may be only 15 pounds, but he approaches cuddling with the determination of a dog three times his size.   Moose is also famous in his foster home for his excellent “sploot.” After a busy round of play, he stretches his back legs behind him and settles onto the floor like a tiny, furry rug. It is difficult to look at Moose in full sploot position without smiling right along with him.   Walk This Way—or That Way   Moose enjoys going for walks, although he has not completely mastered the concept of traveling in one consistent direction. He may zigzag at first while he investigates the neighborhood and works through his initial excitement. With guidance and a little time to settle, he becomes a much more focused walking companion.   He does not bark at or chase people or dogs on walks and generally ignores the neighborhood dogs he passes.  Moose has not lived with a resident dog in his current foster home, though he came into the shelter with his canine friend Mouse and they lived in the same kennel. He also met quite a few dogs at the DPS Safehouse and was friendly with all. He also met a cat at the Safehouse and completely ignored her.   Crate-Trained and Comfortable Alone   Moose is fully crate-trained and does well when left home alone. His foster family places him in his crate with water while they run errands or attend work meetings. He may bark briefly when first crated, but he quickly settles and remains quiet. He keeps his crate clean and has not shown signs of separation anxiety.   That said, Moose is happiest when he is part of the action. He adores his people and will thrive with a family that has plenty of time for play, walks, training, and affection.   A Smart Young Student   Moose is an intelligent dog who is eager to engage with his people. He is mostly housetrained, does not mark inside, and succeeds when given regular opportunities to go outside.   Moose can also become a little mouthy during particularly exciting greetings. This behavior has only been directed toward the 18-year-old daughter in his foster home and appears to be exuberant puppy behavior rather than aggression. Consistent redirection, appropriate toys, and calm greetings will help him learn a more polite way to express his enthusiasm.   Coat and Care   Moose has a non-shedding coat. His soft coat will require regular brushing and professional grooming to prevent tangles and keep him looking and feeling his best.   Make Room for a Moose   Moose’s ideal family will appreciate a lively young dog and be excited to continue his training. He needs an active outlet for his energy, but his greatest wish is simply to be included. Give him walks, playtime, guidance, and plenty of affection, and Moose will reward you with endless smiles, enthusiastic kisses, impressive sploots, and as much lap time as you can handle.   There may be plenty of dogs looking for homes, but there is only one Moose—and this happy little guy is ready to make a very big impression. August 18, 2026, 7:11 pm
