Meet Kenai, the male Husky. Kenai came to the Shelter as a stray found in Seacliff. He was found with four mini-me’s in tow (which we assume are his puppies)! A good Samaritan brought them to the Shelter for safety. Kenai has been a social butterfly with people since his arrival. True to his husky nature, Kenai is an energetic guy who would benefit from adoptive home that provides above average mental and physical stimulation. Kenai has met other dogs at the Shelter and may be a bit selective in his interactions – enjoying some but not others. This may be hormonally based or it may just be Kenai’s preference. Adopters are recommended to prioritize decompression after adoption and avoid high traffic dog areas (the beach, dog parks, etc). Any resident dogs should meet at the shelter prior to adoption. Kenai is recommended to go to a home free of felines. Kenai`s adoption fee has been sponsored by the Santa Cruz Animal Shelter Foundation`s Leave No One Behind fund - a fund that draws adopter`s eyes towards animals that have been waiting a little bit longer than average for the right adopters to come along and bring them home.The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw!Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Meet Luna, the 5 year old female husky. Luna arrived to the Shelter after a pervious guardian left her and another dog behind. A roommate brought them to the Shelter for safety as they were unable to care for them long term. Luna is a fluffy gal who hasn’t had the best husbandry – arrived to the Shelter with matting and a dirty coat. She has been lively and playful with staff and volunteers – soaking up all the attention she can get. Luna may need some patience when transitioning to the new home to learn the daily routine and bond with her people. Typical to Nordic breeds – Luna does have a bit of wanderlust. She should be securely on leash or supervised if out in an enclosed yard to ensure she doest not go off to find her own fun. Luna has lived with another dog previously. Although initially unsure of new dogs at the Shelter, she has met other dogs of various sizes and was noted to be mildly curious and quiet. A home with another dog may be a fit after a meet ‘n greet at the Shelter. We do not have any history of Luna with children or cats. Meet Barley, the red and white husky. Barley arrived to the Shelter as a stray so we don’t know about his life before now. Staff have observed that he is an active social guy who, typical to his breed, can be very vocal – especially when left alone. He is eager to go out with staff and volunteers for play time in the yard – engaging in pets and sitting next to his people when out. Barley is looking for a husky savvy adopter to meet his match. He may do well with a well matched dog in his adoptive home but currently approaches interactions from a hormonal perspective. Any resident dogs should meet at the Shelter prior to adoption. Barley is available for pre-adoption. Come meet him, fall in love and take him home after his neuter surgery. Kimber came to us when her family’s housing situation changed, and she’s ready to settle into her next chapter.Although Kimber still enjoys a good adventure, she’s a bit like someone who used to backpack but now prefers car camping. She’s happy to head out for a walk, take a trip to the beach, or explore with her people—but she’s equally happy lounging around the house and keeping tabs on everyone.Her foster family describes her as a “perfect house guest.” She sleeps through the night, has lovely house manners, greets you in the morning with a wagging tail, and is perfectly content hanging out nearby while you work from home. She loves people, especially children, and enjoys meeting and spending time with polite canine friends.
